• The No. 14/13 Syracuse women’s basketball team hosts in-state foe Siena on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

• The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and Brian Higgins ‘04 (play-by-play) will be on the call. Higgins will also be on the call live on the Syracuse IMG Sports Network. As always, follow @CuseWBB on Twitter for live in-game updates.

• Syracuse is coming off a 95-49 victory in its season opener against Rhode Island on Nov. 11. For the 10th straight year, the Orange opened up the season with a win. Senior guard Alexis Peterson led all scorers with a 28-point effort.

• Siena recorded a 14-18 overall record on the 2015-16 season and did not participate in postseason competition. Head coach Ali Jaques is in her fourth season at the helm of the Saints program. Junior guard Kollyns Scarbrough collected Preseason All-MAAC First Team honors.

SPECTACULAR START

• Syracuse kicked off the 2016-17 campaign with a 95-49 thrashing of Rhode Island on Nov. 11. It matched the program record for the most points scored in a season opener. SU scored a 95-65 win against Siena to open the 1981-82 campaign on Nov. 21, 1981.

• It marked the Orange’s second-largest margin of victory in a season opener all-time. Syracuse opened the 2012-13 campaign with a 94-47 win against Farleigh Dickinson on Nov. 11, 2013.

• Senior guard Alexis Peterson notched 28 points in the team’s first contest of the year. Peterson recorded the most points scored by a Syracuse player in a season opener since Chandrea Jones tallied 33 points at Siena in the first game of the 2008-09 campaign on Nov. 14, 2008.

• The Orange ranked 12th nationally in 3-point field goals made per game last year, averaging 8.8 3-point field goals made per contest. In its first game of the 2016-17 season, the team set a program single-game record with 17 3-point field goals made against Rhode Island.

HILLSMAN MAKING HISTORY

• Prior to head coach Quentin Hillsman’s appointment, Syracuse touted a 418-452 (.480) overall record, three trips to the NCAA Tournament, and zero NCAA Tournament victories in 35 seasons.

• In 11 seasons as the head coach of the Syracuse women’s basketball program, Hillsman owns a 220-116 (.655) overall record. The Orange have participated in five NCAA Tournaments, earning seven victories.

• Since the start of the 2006-07 campaign, Syracuse has recorded 15 victories against opponents ranked in the top 25 of the Associated Press Poll. In the 30 seasons prior (the AP Poll began during the 1976-77 season), the program only recorded seven wins against nationally-ranked foes.

• Hillsman is 10 wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in school history. Barb Jacobs held a 229-190 (.546) overall mark in her 15 seasons at the helm.

SERIES BREAKDOWN

• Syracuse and Siena will meet for the 11th time on Monday night. The all-time series is deadlocked, with each team taking five meetings. The Orange have won each of the past matchups.

• In the last meeting between the two teams, Syracuse opened the 2008-09 season with an 89-75 victory against Siena on Nov. 14, 2008. Guard Chandrea Jones led the way with 33 points, while guard Erica Morrow had 25 points.

#ORANGECOLLAR EFFORT IN OPENER

• Syracuse picked up right where it left off, coming off its magical run to the NCAA Tournament final in April, with a 95-49 victory against Rhode Island in its 2016-17 season opener on Nov. 11.

• Last season, SU led the nation in turnover margin, taking the ball

away an average of 10.08 times more than its opposition. The primary reason for that was its disruptive full-court press defense. On the year, the Orange ranked second nationally in turnovers forced, averaging 23.87 turnovers forced per contest.

• In its first contest of the 2016-17 campaign, Syracuse put on a

defensive clinic. The Orange forced its opposition into 41 turnovers, the most in an Orange women’s basketball game in the confines of the Carrier Dome. In addition, the team recorded 26 steals, five shy of matching the program single-game record.

• Five players recorded at least three steals against the Rams on Friday afternoon. Senior guard Alexis Peterson led the way with a team-high six steals. Peterson set the Syracuse single-game record with 10 steals against Rhode Island last season.

• The Orange certainly capitalized off the Rams’ misfortunes. Syracuse

was able to turn Rhode Island’s 41 turnovers into 38 points. In addition, it enabled the team’s 3-point attack. The Orange knocked down a program single-game record 17 3-point field goals on the day.

AMERICA’S BEST BACKCOURT

• It’s been a long road back to the top for redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes, following two season-ending injuries, but after a strong postseason in 2016 Sykes has reestablished herself among the country’s elite talents.

• Guard Alexis Peterson took a back seat as a freshman, averaging a mere 3.0 points and 1.0 rebound per contest. She emerged as the team’s top scorer following Sykes’ first season-ending injury, earning All-ACC honors as a sophomore.

• The 2015-16 campaign marked the return of Sykes, but also the first time the two would truly play together. It took some time for the pair to click, but in the final 18 games of the season their potential was on full display. Peterson (17.3) and Sykes (12.1) combined to score more than 40 percent of the team’s total points in its final 18 contests, helping the squad to 16 victories.

• After its run to the 2016 NCAA Tournament final, Syracuse is on the national map. Now, Peterson and Sykes are ready to show the country they are America’s best backcourt.

NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED

• Syracuse is ranked No. 13 in the country in the Preseason USA Today Coaches Poll, as announced on Oct. 27. It marks the highest Syracuse has been ranked in a preseason poll in program history.

• The Orange is ranked No. 14 nationally in the Preseason Associated Press Poll, which was released on Nov. 1. It matches the highest the team been ranked in the AP Poll in the history of the program. Syracuse was ranked No. 14 in the nation in the AP Poll in each of the final three ranking releases of the 2015-16 season.

• Prior to head coach Quentin Hillsman’s arrival, the Orange had never been ranked in either the AP Poll or coaches’ rankings. Since the start of his tenure in 2006-07, Syracuse has been ranked 51 times in the AP Poll and has spent 52 weeks in the coaches’ rankings.

ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE

• Senior guard Alexis Peterson has proven that she is one of the elite guards in the nation. Last season, Peterson was named to the mid-season watch list for the Dawn Staley Award, All-ACC First Team, ACC All-Defensive Team, All-ACC Tournament Team, All-Sioux Falls Region Team, and earned Sioux Falls Regional Most Outstanding Player accolades.

• The Columbus, Ohio native is coming off a postseason to remember. In Syracuse’s nine postseason contests, Peterson averaged 20.7 points per game. In the process, she led the team to its third conference tournament final in program history and the Orange’s first national title game appearance.

• In the squad’s thrashing of No. 12/12 Duke on Jan. 3, 2016, Peterson put on a spectacular show. The guard notched 17 points and a career-high 13 assists. Peterson was two assists shy of matching the Syracuse single-game record. Even more impressive, she only turned the ball over twice.

• In the 2015-16 season opener at Rhode Island on Nov. 13, 2015, Peterson recorded a personal-best 10 steals, setting an Orange single-game record. Peterson notched eight steals in the opening 20 minutes of play, which was one shy of the previous school record. She also dished out nine assists against the Rams.

BLOCK PARTY

• Senior center Briana Day has been leaving her mark in the Syracuse women’s basketball record book. Day and Orange all-time leading scorer Kayla Alexander are the only two players in program history with at least 150 blocked shots and 700 rebounds in their collegiate careers.

• Day ranks fifth in program history with 199 career blocked shots. Alexander holds the SU career record, blocking 350 shots from 2010-13. In addition, Day ranks seventh in school history with 825 career rebounds. Nicole Michael, the Orange’s all-time leader in boards, collected 996 rebounds from 2007-10.

• As a junior, Day collected ACC All-Defensive Team honors, her first all-conference recognition of her collegiate career. The center ranked third in the league and 51st nationally in blocks, averaging 1.97 blocked shots per contest.

• The Raleigh, N.C. native shattered the SU single-season rebounds record during her sophomore season. Day notched 322 boards on the year, 21 more than Martha Mogish posted in 1980-81.

ONE MORE RUN

• After missing 31 contests from March 23, 2014 – Nov. 13, 2015, redshirt senior guard Brittney Sykes returned in a big way last year. Sykes ranked third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game. She also was Syracuse’s lone representative on the 2016 All-Final Four Team.

• After missing the Orange’s first two NCAA Tournament second-round contests in program history, Sykes had a game to remember against Albany on March 20, 2016 in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome. The Newark, N.J. native poured in a season-high 24 points against the Great Danes, leading the team to its first Sweet 16 appearance.

• Against Boston College on Jan. 27, 2016, Sykes became the 25th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. In addition, she became the ninth player to accomplish this feat under head coach Quentin Hillsman. She currently ranks 14th in Syracuse history with 1,225 points scored in her collegiate career.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

• Senior forward Isabella Slim has been a mainstay in the Syracuse lineup since arriving on campus in 2013. Slim has started all 104 games of her collegiate career. The Amsterdam native ranks ninth in program history in career starts.

• In addition to her time at Syracuse, Slim boats tremendous international experience. The senior forward helped the Netherlands U20 national team to a third-place finish at the 2015 FIBA U20 Championship in Spain. It marked the country’s best finish at the event. Slim recorded four double-doubles in the tournament.

• Head coach Quentin Hillsman coached Slim on the Dutch U18 national team in 2012. Hillsman has served as an assistant coach for various Netherlands junior national teams since 2011.

The Hillsman File Career Record/Yrs ...................219-116/10Record at School/Yrs ....................... Same

Head coach Quentin Hillsman has transformed the Syracuse University women’s basketball program into a national championship contender. Hillsman took over a program that went 28-55 in the three seasons prior to his appointment and has since guided the Orange to unprecedented heights.

In his 11 seasons at the helm, Syracuse boasts an impressive résumé, which includes nine consecutive postseason appearances, five trips to the NCAA Tournament, 11 all-conference selections, two All-Americans, and two WNBA Draft picks. Under Hillsman, the Orange own a 220-116 overall record, averaging more than 21 victories per season. Hillsman is 10 wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in school history.

The 2015-16 campaign put Syracuse on the national map, like never before. The Orange advanced to its first Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four, and national final in their history. SU set program records with five wins against nationally-ranked foes, 13 conference victories, 23 regular-season wins, and 30 overall victories. Following its run to the national final, Syracuse was ranked third in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.

Hillsman wasted no time making an impact as the head coach of the Orange program. In only his second season in 2007-08, he guided Syracuse to a 22-9 overall record and its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in school history. SU climbed into the national rankings for the first time in history, checking in as high as No. 21 in the country in the Associated Press Poll. Hillsman was recognized as the 2008 BIG EAST Coach of the Year.

Hillsman has built a strong reputation as one of the top recruiters in women’s collegiate basketball. Nine of the past 10 recruiting classes have been touted as top-25 classes nationally by the Dan Olson Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. In addition, the school’s first four McDonald’s All-Americans have all been recruited and played under Hillsman.

A native of Suitland, Md., Hillsman graduated from St. Mary’s College (Md.) in 1993 after a standout playing career with the Seahawks. He led the squad to two Capital Athletic Conference championships and one conference tournament title, earning all-conference accolades and setting the school’s single-game and single-season assist records. Hillsman studied sport management at the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala. from 1994-96, as well.

He, his wife, Shandrist, and their sons, Kyan and Harlem, reside in Jamesville.

NOT SEEING DOUBLE

• Senior center Bria Day gives Syracuse another solid option at the center position. Last season, Day played in all but one contest, averaging 2.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest.

• Day put together one of her best performances of her collegiate career in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament against Albany on March 20. With her twin sister, Briana, in early foul trouble, Day guided Syracuse to its first trip to the Sweet 16. Day notched 10 rebounds in a career-high 28 minutes played.

• The Raleigh, N.C. native has been a consistent shot blocker for the Orange in her collegiate career. Entering the 2016-17 season, she is 27 blocked shots shy of moving into 10th place on the Syracuse all-time blocks list.

• Prior to deciding to concentrate solely on basketball, Day was one of the top track and field athletes in the state of North Carolina. Day finished in fifth place in the high jump competition at the 2005 USATF Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

DEEP THREAT

• Sophomore guard Abby Grant is one player to will attempt to fill the void left by Brianna Butler, the program’s all-time leader in career 3-point field goals made. Grant is one of three Orange returners that knocked down at least 20 3-point field goals last season.

• In her first year on campus, Grant played in 23 games, which ranked second among Syracuse freshmen. She led all Orange freshmen in scoring, averaging 2.8 points per contest in her rookie season. Grant twice recorded nine points in a single game, as well.

• Grant contributed immediately during the 2015-16 campaign. The Suwanee, Ga. native recorded at least one 3-point field goal made in each of the first six games of the season.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

• Syracuse holds one of the strongest home court advantages in the nation. Under head coach Quentin Hillsman, the Orange own a 78-4 overall record against non-conference opposition at home.

• Prior to its loss against Arizona State on Dec. 12, 2015, SU had won 72 non-conference home games in-a-row, which was the longest active streak in the nation. Prior to its setback against the Sun Devils, the Orange’s last home loss against a non-conference opponent came on Dec. 22, 2006.

• Since the 2010-11 season, Syracuse has played all of its home contests inside the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome. The Orange own a 130-51 (.718) overall record in the Loud House.

NEW FACES

• Despite returning 10 players from the 2015-16 team that advanced to the national final, many new faces have joined the program. In total, seven players joined the Syracuse women’s basketball team for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

• Freshman guard Desiree Elmore was the Orange’s first five-start recruit to sign with the program since Brianna Butler and Brittney Sykes. Elmore was ranked the No. 51 player in the Class of 2016 by espnW Hoop Gurlz. She led Capital Prep to four straight state championships in Connecticut.

• Another true freshman to keep your eyes on is guard Gabby Cooper. A three-star recruit, Cooper was ranked the No. 22 guard in her class by espnW HoopGurlz. She led Morgan Park High School to its first trip to the state semifinals in 2016.

• A trio of players transferred into the program, but will not be eligible for competition until the 2017-18 campaign. Jasmine Nwajei was the nation’s leading scorer at Wagner in 2015-16, Miranda Drummond helped St. Bonaventure to the second round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, and Isis Young played in 16 games at Florida.

TOUGH SLATE

• SU will be challenged night in and night out with a tough schedule this year. Syracuse is slated to play seven squads that played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, with the possibility of playing two more at the Gulf Coast Showcase in November.

• The Orange will look to non-conference play to prepare them for the rigors of ACC action. Syracuse will play George Washington, Michigan State, and Texas A&M, all of which were participants in last year’s NCAA Tournament, in non-league play.

ORANGE SELECTED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL • Syracuse was picked to finish in fourth place in the Atlantic Coast

Conference, the league announced at its annual media day event on Oct. 12. It marked the highest the program has been predicted to finish since joining the conference in 2013.

• Both the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches selected the Orange as the fourth-best team in the league. Notre Dame was selected as the preseason favorite by both committees, while Louisville and Florida State rounded out the top three, respectively.

• Senior guard Alexis Peterson was one of 10 players selected to the Preseason All-ACC Teams. Similar to the preseason polls, the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches both honored the same 10 players in their preseason all-conference teams. Peterson was one of seven players on the preseason all-league teams who were recognized on the 2016 All-ACC First Team by the Blue Ribbon Panel and coaches a year ago.
