SocialStudies:Synergy’ssocialstudiescurriculumisinternallydevelopedinalignmentwiththeneedsoutlinedbytheArizonaStateStandards.Becausestudentslivinginourtargetpopulationoftenlackthebackgroundknowledgeneededtocomprehendcomplexreadingpassages,awidevarietyofliteratureandinformationalresourcesthataligntothesocialstudiesstandardsareusedtocreatehighqualitylessonsthatteachstudents’Americanhistory,worldhistory,civics/government,geography,andeconomicsandareintegratedwiththeEnglishLanguageArtsstandardsofreading,writing,andspeaking.IngradesK-2,socialstudiesreinforcesliteraryskillstotheextentpossible,usingsocialstudiestopics.Forthemostpart,itisanotheropportunityforourstudentstoreadandwritetoensureprogressioninliteracy.Ingrades3,4,5and6lessonsfocusmoreonsocialstudiescontent.

5.MeetingtheNeedsofStudentswithDisabilitiesandEnglishlearnersInadditiontoactionstepsarticulatedinthisdocument,allstate/federallawsandIDEAassurancesprovidedannuallytotheDepartmentremainapplicableandineffect.HowSynergyPublicSchoolensureaccessandmeettheneedsofstudentswithdisabilities.ActionSteps:

Distancelearningteachersmaydiscusswithparents,studentbehaviorsoremotionsthatneedadditionalsupport.TheDistanceLearningteachercanreferthefamilyandstudenttoTerrosforanintakeappointmentandpossibleservices.TheschoolbasedTerroscounselormayprovideDistanceLearningcounselingorservicestothestudent/familyifdeemednecessary.

SynergyPublicSchoolusesSuccessforAll’sGettingAlongTogetherProgramforsocialandemotionallearning.GettingAlongTogetherhasathree-prongedfocus:studentslearnthinkingandcognitiveskills,emotionalmanagement,aswellasinterpersonalandsocialskills.Collectively,theseskillsandstrategiescreateapeacefulschoolenvironmentwherestudentsareempoweredtomanagetheirownbehavior,decreaseconflict,andincreasereceptivitytolearning.GettingAlongTogetherhelpsstudentswithfocus,memory,andself-control,aswellasbuildingempathy,friendshipskills,cognition,andcopingskillsforcommonsocialproblems.

Studentsdonotalwayscometoschoolwithsufficientconflict-managementskillsorself-regulationskillstonegotiateavirtualclassroomsetting.Todevelopahealthycontroloftheiremotions,theymayneedtopracticespecificstrategiesforcoolingdownwhentheyfeelthemselvesgettingfrustratedorangry.Afterthefirsttwoweeksofthedistancelearninglessons,GettingAlongTogetherbeginstheregularroutineofaskilllessonatthebeginningoftheweekandaClassCouncilattheendoftheweek.

Thisliveinstructionwilltakeplaceduringthefirst30minutesofinstructiondaily.TheClassCouncilisahalf-hourmeetinginwhichstudentsdoreal-lifeapplicationoftheskillstheyarelearningtocreateamorepositiveandproductivelearningenvironment.Thelivelessonwillberecordedforthosestudentswhoareunabletobeliveduringthescheduledblock.

andStateAssessment(AzMERIT2).3. AtSynergyPublicSchool,thepercentagethatdemonstratesproficiencyormasteryofaskillorcontenthasbeensetat80%.

Thisisintentionallysethigherthanthestandardscoreof70%utilizedbyothereducationalinstitutions.TherationalebehindthispercentistoguideandpushstudentstosurpasstheArizonaStandards,notjustmeetthem.Onnorm-referencedtests,

the80%willbedeterminedbasedonnumberofquestionsthestudentanswerscorrectlyoutofthenumberofquestionsassessed.Onendofthelessonassessments,the80%willbedeterminedbythenumberofproblemspresentedorarubric.

4. DeveloplayersofInterventiontosupportgrowthtowardsmastery:

o Studentsarepresentedwithmaximumopportunitiestomasterthecurriculum:o Endoflessonassessmentsarebasedonwholegroupdirectinstruction,withsufficientmodelingandpractice

7. Grade3(AppliestoDistancelearningandIn-PersonStudents)TomaintaincompliancewithArizona,MoveonWhenReadinglegislation,SynergyPublicSchoolwillnotpromoteathird-gradestudent“ifthepupilobtainsascoreonthereadingportionoftheArizonainstrumenttomeasurestandardstest,orasuccessortest,thatdemonstratesthatthepupil’sreadingisnotproficientatthethird-gradelevel.”BasedonArizonastatelaw,therearetwoexceptionstothisincludingEnglishLanguageLearners(whohavereceivedlessthantwoyearsofEnglishinstruction)andstudentswithdisabilitieswhohavepreviouslybeenretained.Allparentswillbenotifiedannuallythat3rdgraderswhoarereadingfarbelowthethird-gradereadinglevelmaynotbepromoted.Forthirdgraderswhoareatriskofbeingretained,theparents/guardians,thestudent’steacherandtheExecutiveDirectorswillchoosethemostappropriate

DistancelearningstudentsinGrades2-6willbeadministeredthequarterlyELA&MathGalileoassessmentsin-persononearlyreleaseWednesdays.Beginningoftheyearpre-testwilloccurduringthefirsttwoweeksofschool,andthenattheendofeachquarter.Studentswillbescheduledatimetoreporttobeassessedatschooltoensureaccuratedataiscollected.GalileoBenchmarkAssessmentswillbegiventoassessstudentsontheirprogresstowardsmasteryofthestandards.Thesebenchmarkassessmentswillbeusedasaguideinplanninganddevelopinglessonsandinterventions.Intheeventofaschoolclosureorintermittentdistancelearningmustoccur,in-personanddistancelearningstudentswilltakeGalileobenchmarksuponthereturntoin-personschool.Iftheclosureislong-term,studentswilltaketheassessmentdistancelearningathome.

DistancelearningstudentsinGradesK-6whorequireanAZELLAplacementtest,willbeadministeredtheassessmentwithinthefirst30daysofschool.Anystudententeringafterthe30dayswhoneedstobeassessed,willbeassessedwithin2weeks.Atthetimeofdistancelearningregistration,iffeasibletheAZELLAwillbeadministeredthatdayinperson.AZELLAassessmentsmustbeadministeredinpersonsoDistanceLearningstudentswillberequiredtoreporttotheschoolatascheduledtimefortheassessment.

DistancelearningstudentsingradesK-6whorequireanAZELLAspringreassessment,willbeadministeredtheassessmentwithinthe6-weekrequiredstatetimeline.AZELLAassessmentsmustbeadministeredinpersonsoDistanceLearningstudentswillberequiredtoreporttotheschoolatascheduledtimefortheassessment.Intheeventofaschoolclosureorintermittentdistancelearningmustoccur,in-personanddistancelearningstudentswilltaketheAZELLAuponthereturntoin-personschoolorasguidedbytheArizonaDepartmentofEducation.

SynergyhaspurchasedadditionalInstructionalAppsforamoresuccessfulimplementationofinterventionanddifferentiationfordistancelearningandin-personstudents.GoogleClassroom/CurriculumInstruction:Synergyhascreatedmodules,lessonsandvideostoexplicitlyteachallstudents(in-personordistancelearning)howtousegoogleclassroom.ThefirsttwodaysofDistanceLearninginstructionwillbededicatedtoteachingstudentshowtoaccess,login,andcompleteassignmentsoneachofthevariousplatforms.Allstudents,whethertheyareinpersonorDistanceLearningwillbeusingGoogleClassroomduringtheday.Allstudents(in-personordistancelearning)willberequiredtocompletedigitalcitizenshipmodulesandbeacertifiedstudenttechnologyuserduringthefirstweekofschool.Intheeventofaschoolclosureorintermittentdistancelearningmustoccur,allstudentswillbepreparedtobeginDistanceLearning.Synergy’sDistanceLearningcurriculumwillalignwithArizonacurriculumstandardsalongwiththeuniqueabilitytoaligntothemission/visionofourschool’spopulationofdistancelearningstudents.Thecontentandapproachwillincludethreebasiccomponentsthatwillbeessentialtoourstudentpopulation:1.Aninstructionalmodelgroundedinresearchforeducatingat-riskyouth.2.Rigorousstandards-basedcontentand3.Supportsandscaffoldstoensurestudentsuccess.Thedistancelearningcurriculumwillprovideengagingcontentwithdirectinstruction,videos,livelessonswithvirtualteachers,andinteractivetoolstomotivatestudents.Itwillalsoprovideamulti-tieredsystemofsupportforallofoursubjectsandallofourgrades.Throughcurriculummapping,Synergyhasidentifiedtheessentialskillsneededforsuccessandisabletoservestudentswhoareonorabovegradelevel,studentsnotmasteringskillsandindividualizedinterventionstrategiestomeetthatstudent’sneedsandgaps.TheDistanceLearninglineplatformwillreportdatainrealtimeandteacherswillbeabletoeasilyidentifystudentneedsandimplementstrategiestoensuregrowthandmasterytowardsstandards.Synergywilluseacurriculummodelthatwillinclude:
