If you want to add extra performance to your Mustang, it's as easy as hitting the net and gettingsome performance parts for you engine headed your way. But what if you want to superchargethe factory SYNC system? As good as Ford's SYNC system is, it does have some limitations. If you want to add features that you didn't originally order, it's difficult to do on your own. This iswhy you need Coastal Electronic Technologies Lockpick system. The SYNC-LP1 Lockpick willallow your SYNC enabled Mustang to have expanded capabilities and will allow you to addfeatures that you could only get as factory ordered options. The unit is available for SYNCsystems with and without the Ford touch screen navigation system. Installation is easy andfairly quick, requiring only simple hand tools and about two hours of free time. Anyone who iscompetent with a screwdriver should have no trouble with installation.

What exactly does the SYNC-LP1 do? The SYNC-LP1 enables many SYNC features that areshut off by the factory at certain times during the drive cycle. It also enables features that thecar may not have been ordered with from the factory. Unfortunately several models ofMustangs cannot be ordered with a rear view camera, including: California Special, ShelbyGT500 and some cars with certain spoiler or delete options. The need to have a camerabecomes readily apparent when you try to back one of the new S197 cars into a garage. Thehigh decklid, package tray and spoiler can block a significant portion of your rear view. Thismakes it impossible to see lower objects directly behind and to the sides of the car.

Additionally, the SYNC system is somewhat constrained by Federal safety requirements (andsome over-zealous lawyers) which mandate that a few features be disabled while you're drivingdown the road. Features like DVD playback are inactive while the vehicle is in motion forobvious reasons. But for some reason the ability to enter an address using the touch screenwhile moving is also disabled. Never mind the fact that any $200 GPS that can be purchasedfrom the auto parts store will allow you to do this. The SYNC system will still allow you to enterGPS commands via the voice interface; however, the problem is that the voice activated SYNCfeatures only work well in a quiet car. passengers then you'll probably never be able to get your destination entered by using voicecommands. This is where the Coastal Electronics Technology, Inc.'s Ford SYNC-LP1 comesin, allowing you to manually enter directions for up to 60 seconds while moving.

For our installation we chose the Coastal Electronic Technologies Lockpick SYNC-LP1, LicensePlate Night Vision Bar Camera (BARCAM221), and the dual camera input wiring harness(SYNCCAM12).

Installation takes approximately two hours and is relatively easy requiring the removal of thecenter console trim panels and the removal of 8 seven-millimeter fastening screws to install theSYNC-LP1. To install the backup camera will require the removal of the rear trim panel in thetrunk and both tag lights, both very easy tasks. All of the wiring harnesses on the SYNC-LP1and camera are plug and play making for an installation where cutting and splicing are notnecessary. The only tools needed are:- flat blade screwdriver- philips head screwdriver- 7mm socket - 12mm socket (optional if you will remove the shifter handle)

and if you are installing a reverse camera- wire crimpers to join the camera to the power leads from the SYNC-LP1 to your camera.

PREPARATION

Start by pre-assembling the SYNC-LP1 wiring harness for your camera. Crimp the power wirefor your camera onto the harness' "Camera Reverse Out" wire, and the ground wire onto theappropriately labeled harness wire. Plug the harness into the SYNC-LP1 and set it aside. CAMERA INSTALLATION

We opted to use the Coastal Electronics Technologies License Plate Night Vision Bar Camera,part number: BARCAM221 as our backup camera solution; however, you may use anyaftermarket camera with an RCA video connector and a 12v power requirement. This unit iswaterproof, has an adjustable camera angle, infrared night vision illumination, and selectablemirror image and distance marking. The camera mounts using existing license plate bolts sothere's no need to fabricate a mount. Unfortunately the camera obscures the state name at thetop of the plate, which may be illegal in some jurisdictions. Please be sure to check your locallaws before mounting it in this manner.

The camera has a wiring harness with a standard RCA video connector, a round female powerreceptacle, and two small jumper leads for mirror image and distance marking. If you want tomount the camera upside down you'll need to put a jumper on the mirror image lead, thisjumper is included with the camera. If you DO NOT want the distance markings to be displayedthen jumper the other lead.

Our installation was on a 2005-2011 body style Mustang; however, installation on a 1979-2004should be even easier since the license plate area is not molded into the rear bumper cover.

WIRE ROUTING

To route the wiring harness extension for the camera you'll need to remove the rear trunk trimpanel. Two plastic wing nut fasteners and four push pin fasteners hold the rear panel on. Twoof the pins are visible from inside the trunk and can be removed by simply pulling out on the trimpanel from the bottom edge. The other pins are located at the top of the panel and are hiddendirectly below where the rubber bumps stops on the trunk lid hit. Simply push the panel straightup and the pins will release.

You should now see the the exposed rear bulkhead for the trunk. On the passenger side youwill see the wiring harness for the tail lights and license plate lights. It has a soft rubbergrommet approximately 2" wide that passes to the outside of the car. By squeezing on thisgrommet and pushing you can gain access to the rear bumper area.

Route the video extension cable through this hole but wait before putting the grommet back intoplace until after you have properly connected the camera.

Next remove the license plate lights. To do this you'll need to first remove the bulb housing byunscrewing the two phillips screws. Using a small flat blade screwdriver you can pop thehousing out. Then with a cloth wrapped around the flat blade screwdriver you can pop the blacklight housings out. Leave the connector wires hanging out of the holes.

You will now be able to pass the video extension cable through to the driver's side of the licenseplate. Pull a small section of the extension cable out of the driver's side light housing hole.

Connect the camera and the power connector and then use electrical tape to wrap theconnection points. This will prevent corrosion and will keep the connectors from pulling awayfrom each other.

Remove the license plate, then mount the bar cam using the license plate screws.

Feed the excess wire up into the bumper cover.

Replace the rear license plate lights by snapping the housings back into the holes, thenreinstalling the lamp assemblies.

Route the other end of the camera extension cable through the trunk on the passenger side. Lift the trunk liner and stuff the cable underneath.

Lower the passenger side rear seatback and fish the cable through. Route the cable between the seatbelt and the trim panel then around the seat bottom.Lift the lower trim panel and route the extension cable underneath, then stuff it under the trimpanel.Gently lift the scuff plate up, beginning from the front of the car and working rearward . You donot need to remove the panel completely, just enough to put the extension cable underneath.Route the wire all the way to the front passenger footwel l.Let the wire lay in the floor until you have installed the SYNC-LP1. FINAL CAMERA INSTALLATION STEPS

Once you have completed the SYNC-LP1 installation and tested the camera you can thenreinstall the trunk trim panels.

SYNC-LP1 INSTALLATION

 

FRONT CONSOLE PANEL REMOVAL

To begin the trim removal, open the arm rest storage door. Then gently pull upward on thecenter console trim, starting at the rear and working towards the front of the car. The panel isheld in with push pins.

To make installation of the SYNC-LP1 it might be easier to remove the shifter handle andelectrical connections while you've got the trim panel removed. Simply remove the tractioncontrol panel plug, then remove the plug at the rear of the console. The shift lever is held onwith two bolts. Removal of the shift lever will make it easier to get access to the SYNC harddrive/DVD unit as you will be able to turn the trim panel 90-degrees for more clearance.

At the bottom of the touch screen trim panel, you will see the two 7mm screws that hold it on . Remove those and then gently pry the panel off, starting from the bottom and working towardsthe top. The panel will be attached by a pair of connectorsfor the HVAC controls and radio buttons.

With the panel removed you will be able to see the six 7mm screws holding the touch screenand the DVD unit . First remove the screwsthen gently pull out the touch screen. The back will have two connectors that must be removed.The most difficult part of the SYNC-LP1 installation is removing the DVD unit. The connectorson the back of the unit have very little slack. We found that removing the black control modulein the center console , behind thetouchscreen enabled easier access to the connectors behind the DVD. To remove simplyunplug the connectors then use the flat blade screwdriver to gently press in the locking tabson either side of the unit. The unit will slide upwards and you can then remove it and set itaside.Carefully slide the DVD out ( Click to see the back of the DVD unit ). It will only move forward acouple of inches. You can then reach behind the unit and start removing the connectors. Most connectors have a tab on the topthat is pushed down allowing the connector to be pulled out. On the lower passenger sidecorner is a connector that simply pulls out. Pull from the plastic collar to prevent the cable frompulling out of the fitting.Once all the connectors are removed, take out the DVD unit and set it aside.

We routed the SYNC-LP1 harness through the hole on the driver's side footwell area of theconsole. This allows the Lockpick to be installed in an area where you can get to it forupgrades via its USB port , or to add more devices to the auxiliarywiring on the SYNC-LP1 harness. The unit can be inserted behind the console trim so that it isaccessible, but is still secure. Once you have the harness pulled into the center console area, find the camera and auxiliarywires and route them behind the center console frame, through to the passenger side.Connect the SYNC-LP1 wiring harness to the factory harness and into the back of the DVDplayer.- Image- Image- Image Slide the DVD player most of the way back into the slot. Then reach behind and connect thewiring harnesses back into the unit. It will be easiest to connect the tightest wires last so thatyou can get the other connectors in first.Connect the Coastal Electronics Technologies video adapter to the back of the touch screen. Route the wiring for the video connector out with the camera power wiresthat you pulled through earlier. Reinstall the screen.Connect the power connector to the receptacle on the video extension cable. Tape theconnector to prevent it from pulling apart.Connect the RCA video cables together and tape them.The next step is to configure the system and test it prior to buttoning everything back up. Start the car and the system will show a prompt that the system configuration will begin in oneminute. This gives the SYNC system time to initialize.

Simply answer the prompts as they appear on the screen.- Prompt- Prompt- Prompt

Once you have followed the prompts the Lockpick will program the SYNC with your changes. During programming SYNC will display a confirmation message. Finally when the Lockpick has made all changes you'll see "Lockpick Setup Complete."

Shut the car off and start it back up again to verify your installation.

To test the camera, put the car in reverse and the display should show the view from the rear. Touching the "Settings" button on the lower left hand corner of the screen will allow you tochange the brightness and contrast settings on the reverse camera. We found that themarkings on the camera were a bit conservative, so make sure to test and see where things lineup before you use the system for the first time.

The SYNC-LP1 will allow you to view the camera whenever you want. To activate the reversecamera you'll need to bring up the SYNC-LP1 menu options. To do this, press and hold thephone button on the steering wheel for three seconds until you get a prompt, then release thebutton. To cycle through the different menu options press the phone button again. When youget to the menu option you want you can then use the touch screen to answer the prompts. When you select your desired menu option the system will remember and this will be the firstoption the next time you activate the options. FINAL ASSEMBLY

After you have checked the camera's operation, you can then button up the center console andthe trunk trim. You are now done with the installation.

For a modest investment of $239 you can dramatically expand your SYNC capabilities and addfeatures that the factory wouldn't install on your Mustang. The amount that you'll spend on theSYNC-LP1 is also less than what you'd spend on bodywork after backing into something. Thefunctionality is excellent and integration is very much as if Ford had provided this setup from theassembly line. With the excellent wiring harness included in the kit installation is a snap andrequires no specialized tools. So far the kit has proven exceptionally useful and completes anotherwise well featured car. We highly recommend it.
