Maestro Leal’s activities as a Conductorand Musicologist often intersect and hisinterest in interdisciplinarity andcollaboration often inform his scholarlyand artistic projects. In 2011 and 2012 he was theassistant director of the Congrés Mondialed’Écologie Sonore (Switzerland), an eventdevoted to music research andperformance. Leal’s program for his debutwith the Panama National SymphonyOrchestra in July 2014 featured worksfrom the fin-de-siècle (1880-1913) thatbridged European and Latin Americanmusical traditions. Most recently (2017),Leal collaborated with the AmericanSpiritual Ensemble in a concert version ofGeorge Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. In2019, he also collaborated with baritoneReginald Smith Jr., Metropolitan Opera NationalAuditions Winner (2015) for a performance ofPilgrimage, a rarely performed Cantata for orchestraand baritone, by American living composer CarlisleFloyd (b. 1926). He has recorded works by severalLatin American composers and has presentedscholarly papers in the U.S., Canada, Greece, Japan,Italy, France, England, Peru, Colombia, andSwitzerland.

The selections in tonight’s concert were made bytonight’s conductor, Dr. Cesar Leal, with the aim of se-lecting orchestral works that were used in movies. Many of these selections have been used in part or intotal for more than one movie, so the listener may as-sociate some with entirely different movies than arementioned here.
Overture to The Barber of Seville was written forthe Opera Buffa (Comic Opera) of Rossini premier-ing in 1816. (Mozart also wrote an opera about thesame character whose name was Figaro about 30years earlier.) What movie? Well, for one, it was usedextensively in a Bugs Bunny cartoon of Looney Tunes
fame. Elmer chases Bugs across an empty stage when, suddenly, the curtain rises on a production ofRossini’s operatic masterpiece. Without missing abeat (or breaking tempo), that wascaly wabbit as-sumes the title role and humiliates Fudd in one“swell foop.” By the way, another Rossini overture, the one for the opera William Tell, was used for manya Lone Ranger movie!
Symphony No. 5’s first movement (Beethoven) hasbeen used in countless movies. At least the first fournotes are well-known. One notable use was in the re-counting of WWII’s D-Day in the movie The LongestDay. It is ironic that the main idea of this great German

composer’s symphony was used by the Allies as a sortof victory call. The reason was the basic four-note motifthat permeates work, “dit-dit-dit-dah,” is Morse codefor the letter “V” . . . Victory! Churchill’s iconic twofingers spread apart was also a reminder of the ultimategoal and, coincidentally, “V” is the Roman numeral for“5,” (Beethoven’s Fifth).
Disney’s full-length, animated movie Fantasia 2000also used the first movement of Beethoven’s 5th Sym-phony, as well as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (starringMickey Mouse), Night on Bald Mountain, and Danceof the Hours (only in the 1940 version of Fantasia) ashort ballet which featured anthropomorphized os-triches, hippos, elephants, and alligators. More Disneymovies are featured with Music from Frozen and amedley of tunes arranged by Bob Lowden presentedas Disney Magic.
The Sound of Music, by Rogers and Hammerstein, was first a Broadway Musical opening in 1959 starring
Mary Martin as Maria. In 1965, Julie Andrews starredin the movie version as the singing nun, then gov-erness, then ultimately Baroness von Trapp.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial directed by Steven Spiel-berg came to the big screen in 1982. It was an imme-diate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become thehighest-grossing film of all time, a record it held foreleven years until Jurassic Park. The best known com-poser of filmdom, John Williams, was tapped for themusic. Williams took a modernist approach, espe-cially with his use of polytonality (playing in two dif-ferent keys simultaneously), combining it with the useof the Lydian mode to express a mystic, dreamlike andheroic quality.
Finally, two movements from the Star Wars Suite, also by John Williams are self-referencing as to theirmovie. Williams is to moviedom’s music bravurawhat Richard Wagner was to the same emotionalgenre of opera.

The Year in Review
“Something for everyone.” The 37th season of our symphony hasso far presented music for every generation. We rolled out the“Red Carpet” at our opening of the season “Playing the Soud-ntrack of Your Life” in September, playing movie classics and pa-triotic pieces that stretched back generations. The Veteran’sconcert “Around the World With USO” brought back memoriesfor our current service men and women, and our Veterans. TheChristmas concert is, for many, a part of their tradition, and thisyear’s event was a complete sell-out, with standing room only.
Members of your local symphony also played at the Latino Con-cert, visited schools, and helped recruit future musicians.
Don’t miss the last two concerts this season, “Love Songs Throughthe Movies” on Valentine’s Day in February, and “Night at theMovies – The Sequel” in April.
Stay tuned for the announcement of next season’s theme.

The Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra Guild(MSOG) is vastly important to the Symphony’s eventswith wonderful volunteerism, financial input, publicity, and support of our symphonic players. The MSOGExecutive Board and general membership are clearly atop organization in the Middle Tennessee area ineffectiveness.
Last Season’s Opening Night “After Party” for seasonticket holders, MSO players, Guild members, andsponsors was a huge success, and their opening “afterparty” for this 2018-2019 season was red-carpet andglamour for the movie themes. The MSO Guild’s “Stayat Home Tea” is a unique fundraiser and their 2ndannual “Music in the Morning,” held in the Spring, wasacclaimed by all.
Moreover, the MSO Guild has supported theSymphony’s Family Concert Series (Latin and Educationconcerts), supported financially the MSO and Ethos, andthe Guild’s plans for the 2018-2019 concert season arebeing carefully crafted to be grander than the prior years.
If you would like to support your symphony, ourMSO Guild would love your membership and help. They meet quarterly. Reach out to their FaceBook page,“Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra Guild,” mail themat: MSOG, PO Box 332483, Murfreesboro, TN 37133,or call the MSO Office.

The Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra supportsthe educational efforts of music teachers by offeringmaster classes, visiting performers, and awards formusical excellence. As students experience this pro-gram they may be inspired to take up an instrument,or to sing, or to simply listen attentively. They areencouraged to believe that they can become a musi-cian, and those who begin to play or sing will learnhow to express themselves creatively through theperformance of music. Every student deserves a placewhere they can excel and musical performance givesan opportunity for success to all. Whether in bandor choir, students have a chance to shine in music
programs in our schools, and we are proud support-ers of these efforts.
The symphony also works hard to encourage theuse of music in regular classrooms, because we be-lieve that music has a special role to play in academicsuccess. Classroom teachers can use music to set thestage for the study of many subjects like reading andmath, and music encourages creativity, critical think-ing and problem solving by activating habits of lis-tening, analyzing, and expressing. Each of these is animportant academic skill that will prepare studentsfor success in life.
