If you haven’t heard Symphonic Metamorphosis, you are in for a treat tonight. It was originally the brainchild of the choreographer and dancer, Leonine Massine, who in 1940 suggested to Paul Hindemith that he write a ballet based on music by Carl Maria Von Weber. The result is an absolute glory from a German composer whom the Nazis labelled “degenerate”.

Le Tombeau de Couperin has to be one of the finest works by French composer Maurice Ravel. He wrote it in homage both to Baroque French music and to various friends who died in World War I. Yet who cannot listen without tapping along to the dance rhythms that intertwine with the more nostalgic strains?

Finally, our European journey moves to Belgium and perhaps the best known piece by the Franco-Belgian composer César Franck, his Symphony in D Minor. The French nationalists didn’t like it at the time, but it quickly became popular despite them.
