What is Symbolism? How is this different from metaphors?

• Symbolism – A method of attaching sentiments, images, traits, and ideas to the attributes of another image. • Ex. = peace• Symbols are interpretive and subjective (their meaning

can changed based on who reads a text).• Symbols imply and suggest.• Just as symbols are subjective, the themes they

supplement are as well.• Extended metaphor – a literary comparison

between two objects that continues throughout an entire work, text, or story.• Metaphors are direct substitution and more objective.• These devices supplement allegory (a narrative that is

meant to be compared to another narrative).
