Lamps emit the most exciting new light in decades-give functional value, beauty and

sales appeal.

This new member of our family of lamps offers industrial and commercial produ.t .rgineers a new range of light application. The uniformity of brightness, low power con

sumption combined with extreme thinness, ease of construction and maintenance make

Panelescent lamps ideal for all kinds of equipment and products. They have a long life

-last for years and years.

Panelescent Lamps give off no heat, are practically indestructible, and can be fabricated

in virtually any shape. Designs or messages can be printed, silk-screened, overlaid, ap-

pliqued or applied by any known method. Mass assembly is easy too-no sockets, fragile

or complicated parts. And, because of our production capabilities, now costs less

Available now from Special Products Division, Sylvania Electric Products Inc.

@ Panelescent is a registered Sylvania brand name for Electroluminescent Lamps.

using electroluminescence, a new way of producing "cold" artificial, low-intensity light

Electrical energy is converted directly into light; there is no intermediate conversion o

into heat, as exists in incandescent bulbs, nor into ultra-violet energy, as in

tubes. Light covers an entire surface-there is no light "point" from one sma

spot or along the length of a tube. Basically, a Panelescent Lamp is a flat-plate condense

with the dieiectric medium between the electrodes containing a phosphor in suspension

When alternating current is supplied, power consumption by the suspended particlesresults in excitation of the phosphor with emission of visible light. The lamp consists o

a metal plate to which a series of coatings are applied, resulting in a lamp no thicker than

half a dozen pages of a magazine with two fine wires or connector, if desired, tosource of power. Simplicity and mechanical strength of Panelescent Lamps present

striking contrast to the complex supporting structure and fragile glass envelope o

practically all other electrical lamps.

SylVania furnishes Panelescent Lamps com-

pletely processed and wired, ready for installation.

cycle house circuit. In some applications where higher brightness levels are

required, a converter can be used to increase voltage and frequency. Wheredirect current is the only primary supply, such as in automotive applications,

the use of oscillators with the Panelescent Lamps is practical.

A commercially available Panelescent Nite-Lite operates on 120-voltcircuits, draws only 0.06 milliamperes with a brightness of 0.7 to 1.0 foot-lamberts. If a lamp of this type, one square inch in area, was operated continu-ously for an entire year, the total power cost would amount to less thanone-penny.

discharge present in the lamps, superimposed spectral lines such as are

found in mercury vapor or fluorescent lamps are not found in Panelescent

Lamps. A continuous energy emission curve, basic to the color generated

by the particular phosphor employed, is all that is obtained.

As the frequency of the supply voltage is increased, there is a shift incolor towards the blue end of the spectrum. The magnitude of this shift

is dependent on the type of phosphor used, as well as frequency.

pacitor, a Panelescent Lamp will fail only when subjected to electrical condi-

tions which cause any condenser to fail-high voltage or operation beyond de-

sign conditions. There are no filaments to fail, no gases to contaminate, and no

emissive material to be consumed.

As the operating frequency of the power supply increases, maintenance of lighoutput decreases. A Panelescent Lamp increases in brightness after its firs100 hours use.

guidelines for the destgn

and application of panelescent lamps

' Panelescent Lamps must be formed before processing. The tightedsurface of a completed lamp is comparable to a porcelain finished partand cannot be shaped after processing.

ii".$

"di- Translucent covers or decals may be placed over the tighted sur-face-offering infinite flexibility in obtaining illuminated lettering, numerals or symbols.

{$# * Designs must allow for a minimum spacing between base-metaledges and lighted area-1/16 inch for panel lamps and 7t4 inch forpointed lamps. (This includes the edges around any holes in lightedarea) . Spacing is necessary to prevent direct electrical contact betweenthe base metal and the conductive film.

".dq&. In panels having flanges or lips, the lighted surface must be 1-116

inch from the flat of the formed edge if the flange or lip is formed awayfrom the lighted surface.

s*{-}- Provision must be made for a contact hole 1/8 inch from thelighted panel surface area.

d&

*. Wherever possible, the contour of the lighting surface area shouldbe simple. Complex contours and multiple holes located

within thelighting surface arearequire special manufacturing dies and add to cost.
