This course is a prerequisite to all advanced Computer Science, Information Systems, and Engineering

courses. Itis designed to present an overview of a broad sample ofinformation technologytopics, and

to verifythatyou know how to use basic office productivity software. It will include a survey ofthe

concepts and terminology ofmodern computing, as well as a hands on approach (lab) where you will

learn and demonstrate practical computer skills used in every academic discipline and work

environment. The hands-on skills will center on the Microsoft Office software suite but will include

    other common technologytools and tasks.

    Course Description

In this course you will studythe history of computers, number systems, hardware organization, types

and uses of computers, the nature and purpose of various software types, the Internet, networking,

internal and external storage, and the social and ethical issues related to technology. You will spend

time in the lab working withthe software packages mentioned above.

Course FormatThis course is a hybrid formatin thatithas an in-classroom component, and an online component. As

such, we will meet face-to-face in the classroom onlytwiceaweek; lab on Monday and lecture on

Wednesday. Online assignments will be given for the remainder ofthe week.

    Technology in the classroom

    Unlike many courses you have taken at OC, laptops and iDevices are not only encouraged in this class;

they are required. There will be hands-on activities in the lecture portion of class and skill-building

activities in the lab portion that require computers. We will periodically use the iDevices for in class

activities and to show how the devices can augment or even replace some ofthe tasks you do withthe

    laptop.

We will be on the Windowsoperating system side throughoutmost ofthe activities so itis importantto

keep that side ofyour computer running well. Ifyou havent been in Windows in a while, login now and

run Windows updates. Ifyour computer gives you anytrouble, take itto the Helpdesk immediately. If

they need to keep it longer than a few hours, they can give you a loaner in the meantime. In other

words, having a broken computer is no excuse for not participating in class or completing the lab

    activities on time!

I will communicate via email and Blackboard periodically between classes so you should make sure you

check your @student.oc.edu email account. Blackboard will be used extensivelyin this course as well.

This semester we are piloting the new version of Blackboard in this class (and others); the new URLis

    Attendance

    Lecture Wednesday

Attendance is notmandated, but, due to the structure ofthe class, it will have a large impact on

a students grade. Periodic quizzes will be given atthe beginningofclassand onlyin class. If

you are not present or not on time you canttake the quiz. This is why we drop the low grades.

That waythe integrity ofthe quizis not compromised and the instructor doesnthave to keep

track of attendance and excused absences.

This course rewards consistent effort over time. Extra creditis not given and you probably

wont be able to raise your grade significantly by waiting to do well on the lasttest.

Virtual Lecture FridaySince this is a hybrid format course, you will attend class virtuallyin place ofthe Friday lecture.

Your participation could be in the form of a discussion question posted to Blackboard or some

other type of online activity. The Virtual Friday assignment will be posted by Friday at 5:00

PM and you will have until the next Friday at 5:00 PM to complete it.

    Quiz Grades

One ofthe objectives in this course is to become familiar withthe manyterms and buzz words

commonly used in computing environments. The text, as well as most class discussion, will relate tothese ideas. Readings fromthe text will be assigned, and you will take a quiz over each chapter via

There will be no make-up on these quizzes, butyou will be allowed to drop your lowest score.

    Lab Work

You will spend 2 hours each week in a lab session as part ofthe requirements for this class, unless you

finishthe lab tasks prior to the start of lab as indicated in the attendance section. Lab activities will

consist ofhands-on instruction in Word, Excel, Access, & PowerPoint, and will require the weeklyin-lab

time plus perhaps some time outside of lab depending on how quicklyyou work. Your lab grade will be

based on accomplishing the assigned objectives and completion of lab reports. You will be allowed to

    Faith & Technology

I love technology probably just like you do, but we all know it can be used for good and for badpurposes. My parents used to ask me when I was young what I wanted to be when I grew up. Whatever

my response they would add, Good, butmake sure to be a Christian _________, and they would fill in

the blank withmy chosen profession. Itis my prayer thatyou will be a Christian technologist. No

matter whatyour chosen profession you will have the chance to influence many lives on a daily basis.

Godly people in the work place are becoming rare in this post-Christian culture. You have a unique

opportunityto show the world what Godliness looks like in your everyday life. Dear friends, I warn you

as temporary residents and foreigners to keep away from worldly desires that wage war againstyour

very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even ifthey accuse you

of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges

the world. 1 Peter 2:11-13 (New Living Translation)

    Americans with Disabilities

Ifyou have a diagnosed disability and need special accommodations, please notify AmyJanzen (x5907)

before or immediately after your first scheduled class meeting. After your disabilityhas been verified,

your instructor will work withyou, with Amy, and withthe Office ofthe Vice President of Academic

Affairs to provide reasonable accommodations to ensure thatyou have a fair opportunityto performin

    the course.

    Cheating

Dont do it. Ifyou are caught cheating you will receive a grade ofzero on the exam or assignment, and

the Dean ofthe College of Professional Studies and the Dean of Students will be notified. A second

offense will resultin an F in the course. You are expected to do your own work on all exams, quizzes,

and lab activities assigned in this class unless the instructor gives specific instructions otherwise for a

particular assignment. Cheating will be assumed iftwo papers, tests, etc. are essentiallyidentical.
