Email is the preferred method of contact and will yield the fastest response. Email any course question and personal concern, including grading questions, to the instructor privately using your GCC email account (@students.gogebic.edu). We will attempt to respond to student emails within 24 hours during the week, and within 48 hours during the weekend. If you have not received a reply within the expected response time, please resend your email.
Outside of class, we will communicate with you via the Announcements tool in Moodle and via your GCC email. It is your responsibility to read all announcements and emails, and to contact us should you have any questions or concerns.

Course Description
This course further expands on the concepts of nursing practice with application to the care of
adult patients with stable and unstable conditions. Mental health is integrated throughout the
course. Application of knowledge and skills occurs in the nursing laboratories and a variety of
clinical settings.
Course Objectives
The student will: 1. Apply nursing concepts to provide safe, quality, evidence-based, patient-centered nursing
care in a variety of healthcare settings to diverse patients across the lifespan with stable
and unstable conditions.
2. Apply clinical reasoning to make patient-centered care decisions for patients across the
lifespan with stable and unstable conditions.
3. Select quality improvement processes to improve patient care for patients across the
lifespan with stable and unstable conditions.
4. Engage in collaboration and teamwork with members of the interprofessional team, the
patient, and the patient’s support persons when caring for patients across the lifespan with
stable and unstable conditions.
5. Analyze the role of information management principles, techniques, and systems, and
patient care technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support
decision-making when caring for patients across the lifespan with stable and unstable
conditions.
6. Apply leadership, management, legal, and ethical guidelines in practice as a professional
nurse.
7. Analyze how a culture of caring can be promoted to provide holistic, compassionate
patient care for acutely ill patients across the lifespan.
Concepts: Cellular Regulation, Intracranial regulation, Clotting, Interpersonal relationships,
Evidence based practice, Patient teaching, Diversity, Anxiety, Psychosis, Mood and affect,
Cognition, and Addiction.
Course Structure
Instructional Modality and Methods
We are using Moodle as our course platform. Your learning will be enhanced by the digital presentation of some course content (e.g., recorded lectures, presentations, outlines, notes) and scheduled assignments in Moodle in addition to lab time and in person or zoom class time. You are welcome to contact us if you would like to schedule an in person or online Zoom
meeting for individual assistance. Moodle Access
To access this course on Moodle, you will need access to the Internet and a supported Web
browser. Go to the GCC home page (http://gogebic.edu) and select the Moodle (Online

Learning) link from the Connect tab. You will use your GCC account to log in to the Moodle
learning management system. Once logged in to Moodle, you will see the course listed under
the My Courses tab. Click on the title to enter the course.

Approved device with internet to be used in the classroom to access Lippincott CoursePoint and HESI, and to take course exams through ExamSoft/Examplify.
Technology Requirements
You will need the following in order to participate in this course:
A laptop or desktop computer compatible with ExamSoft/Examplify.
A stable internet connection.
Speakers and a microphone.
A webcam.
Course materials including assignments, exams, and supplemental course resources are located in Moodle learning management system. To participate in learning activities and complete assignments, you will need:
consistent and reliable access to the Internet;
a working computer that has a current operating system with updates installed, plus a web camera and speakers/headphones/earbuds;
a current Internet browser that is compatible with the Moodle learning management system and ExamSoft testing software through Examplify
a word processing program such as Microsoft Word; and
reliable data storage for your work, such as a USB drive or cloud storage; and

a "technology back-up" plan in case your computer or Internet connection is not working.
Basic Computer Skills Needed
To be successful in the nursing program, you will need to have a good foundation of basic computer skills, including those listed below. Students enrolled in this course should possess the ability to:
Download and upload documents;
Organize and save electronic files;
Create, send, read, and reply to GCC email messages;
Attach files to emails and course areas;
Use a word processor (i.e., Microsoft Word, Google Docs);
Navigate the Internet; and
Reach out to tech support staff when issues arise.

This syllabus, along with its course schedule, is subject to revision as needed to adapt to new
knowledge or unanticipated events. Updates will remain focused on achieving the course
objectives and students will receive notification of such changes. It is the responsibility of
students to check GCC email messages and course announcements in Moodle to stay current in
their courses.
GCC Email and Course Communication
A college-assigned student e-mail account is the official means of communication with all
students at Gogebic Community College. To stay current with school and course information,
you are expected to check your official GCC e-mail account on a frequent and consistent basis.
You can access your GCC student email account through GCC homepage (http://gogebic.edu).
Academic Honesty
All Gogebic Community College students have the responsibility to know and abide by the
regulations of academic integrity. Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and
will be penalized with a failing grade (i.e., zero points) for the assignment, quiz, or examination
in which infringement occurred. Any violations of academic integrity may be referred to the
Conduct Committee for further disciplinary action. Examples of academic dishonesty behaviors
include plagiarism, illicit collaboration, recycling coursework, and cheating. Additionally, course
assistance websites, such as CourseHero and Chegg, are not permitted sources; material taken
or copied from these sites constitutes a violation of the academic integrity policy. If you have

any doubts or questions about what constitutes academic misconduct, please do not hesitate
to contact the instructor.
Quizzes and assignments are to be completed alone, unless specifically identified as group
work.
Plagiarism detection
Gogebic Community College has a license agreement with Turnitin.com, a service that helps detect plagiarism by comparing student papers with Turnitin's database and Internet sources. Students who take this course agree that all required papers may be subject to submission for textual similarity review and a copy of submitted papers is retained in a Turnitin database archive to be compared with future submissions. Students who submit papers to Turnitin retain the copyright to the work they created. Use of the Turnitin service is subject to the privacy and security policy posted on Turnitin's website.
Attendance & Participation Policy
Your success in this course will depend on your communication, consistent engagement, and active participation in all course activities. Success in this course requires you adhere to the deadlines of assignments, discussions, and course activities. Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions as well as class and lab activities.

Netiquette
Netiquette is online etiquette. It is important that our classroom environment promotes the respectful exchange of ideas, including being sensitive to the views and beliefs expressed during online discussions. The following are general guidelines to follow to practice proper netiquette:
Avoid using all CAPS in online communication.
Use proper spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation in all correspondence. Don’t use “texting” language.
Be respectful to each other and do not use offensive or threatening language
Express differences of opinions in a polite and rational way.
Grading policy
See Handbook for Associate Degree Nursing Students for additional information. A minimum grade of 80% on exams only is required to pass the course and progress in the nursing program. Assignment points will be added only if the exam average is 80% or greater. A minimum grade of 80% needs to be maintained after assignment points are added to the grade total to pass the course and progress in the program. Grades will not be rounded up. Students who score less than 80% on an exam are required to meet with the instructor. Use of available tutoring services may be required by the instructor. Evaluation for this course is based on points and consists of:

Other assignments may be given throughout the semester as deemed necessary by the instructor
Testing Policy: Each student must bring an approved device and charger in order to take an exam. If the device malfunctions, the student may test on a GCC computer. If the student does not bring an approved device with a charger, the student may test on a GCC computer WITH A 5% TEST DEDUCTION. Students must remove hats/hoods and watches, and turn off cell phones and place in a backpack/purse or on counter (off their person) prior to testing. The cell phone may not be accessed until the exam is completed. The exam must be downloaded onto the approved device prior to the start of class. After taking the exam, the student must show the instructor the “green screen” on the device before leaving the classroom. If the student leaves the classroom prior to showing the instructor the “green screen” the student will receive a “0” on the test. Proctor may assign seats for testing. Looking around the room and at others computer screens is not allowed.
Math Competency: Each student will be required to take a basic conversions and dosage calculation test by week 4. If the student receives less than 90% on this test they will need to remediate by setting up an appointment with a tutor or nursing faculty and the test will be given again by week 15 of the semester. If the student receives less than 90% on the second exam, the student will be required to complete the remediation activity required by the instructor over winter break. The student will be required to present proof of successful completion of the required remediation and take the exam a third time the week prior to the start of second semester. Arrangements for the test can be made through the nursing office. If the student receives less than 90% on the third attempt they will be unable to continue on in the program and will receive a maximum of a “C+” in NUR240.

Policies and Student Support
All policies and guidelines found in the Handbook for Associate Degree Nursing Students will be followed and enforced. The student is expected to be familiar with all policies. Failure to follow policies and guidelines may result in probation, failure in the course and/or removal from the program based on the seriousness of the offence. Community Service
Each student will have a 10 hour community service requirement per year in the ADN program. Each student must have at least 2 different activities in this requirement and activities must be approved by an instructor. Link for submission of service hours posted in Moodle.

Community College students. With Brainfuse, you can easily access multiple resources and
receive one-on-one tutor help. Brainfuse Online Tutoring is not a homework answering service.
Instead, Brainfuse tutors assist learning and help you with strategies to understand coursework.

Library/Learning Resources Center
Alex D. Chisholm Learning Resources Center, located on the GCC Ironwood campus, contains

Course Copyright
The course materials on this course and made available to students through the course site are
for the use of the students enrolled in the course only. They cannot be reproduced, distributed,

shared with those not in the class, and uploaded to other online environments. Any distribution
of these materials without explicit permission would be considered a violation of the Academic
Integrity policy described herein.
COVID-19 Students taking classes on ground with Gogebic Community College must abide by our
procedures and the state executive order regarding face coverings, social distancing, and
mandatory COVID screenings. Students must also cooperate with contact tracing, isolation, and
quarantine protocols.
Students will not be allowed to enter campus if they test positive for COVID-19.
FACE COVERINGS Face coverings are expected to be worn indoors at this time to meet CDC guidelines. Students,
staff, and faculty should wear face coverings indoors to avoid the spread of COVID 19.
Students who require accommodation for a face covering will need to meet with the Director of
Trio and Accessibility to process an accommodation. No student will be permitted to enter a
campus building or classroom without a proper face covering.
SOCIAL DISTANCING All students, faculty, and staff are required to observe social distancing guidelines (3-foot
separation) when possible at all times.
CLEANING Classrooms are equipped with disinfectant cleaner, towels, and hand sanitizer. Instructors and
students should wipe down their area upon entry and exit of the classroom.
Classrooms will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected nightly.
