Business Computer Applications

BCA

Sixth Grade

We will use the keyboarding software Type to Learn.

All students are expected to learn to type using the touch method. This means focusing on learning where the alphabetic keys are without looking at the keyboard. This takes time and practice. Students are encouraged to practice at home if a computer is available.

We will be using Microsoft Office 2007 Software for all of our creative documents. We are not limited to the standards below, if times permits we will cover more standards to better prepare computer software skills.

KEYBOARDING MASTERYThe student will be able to:

Use correct fingering and proper techniques to key alphanumeric information.

Use correct fingering and proper techniques to key numeric information on a ten-key pad.

Use touch techniques to key information.

Use equipment and/or software capabilities to correct errors.

Use correct procedures for storing and retrieving information.

Demonstrate proper use of hardware and software.

SAFETY AND ETHICS

The student will be able to:

Identify major causes of work-related accidents in offices.

Describe the threats to a computer network, methods of avoiding attacks, and options in dealing with virus attacks.

Identify potential abuse and unethical uses of computers and networks.

Discuss issues surrounding information privacy (e.g., social media)

BASIC COMPUTER CONCEPTS

The student will be able to:

Identify and explain the components of a computer system.

Categorize software according to function.

Define computer terminology.Demonstrate both cold and warm boots.

MICROSOFT OFFICE WORD

The student will be able to:

Create word processing files/folders.

Save word processing files using Save and Save As.

Open word processing files/folders.

Print word processing files.

Create documents (e.g., reports).

Format documents (e.g., reports).

Edit documents (e.g., reports,).

Use cut, copy, and paste features.

Demonstrate the use of character formatting features (e.g., bold, underline, italics, font styles and sizes, superscript, subscript).

Demonstrate the use of paragraph formatting features (e.g., tabs, indentations, line spacing, enumerated/bulleted items).

Demonstrate document editing using spell/grammar check, thesaurus, and word count.

Insert, position, and resize graphics in a document.

PRESENTATION SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

The student will be able to:

Identify presentation software terminology.

Identify elements of a clear and concise presentation.

Identify procedures for planning and creating a presentation (e.g., 6 x 6 rule, complementary graphics, contrast, background).

Create new presentations from blanks and/or templates.

Insert, delete, edit, and copy slides.

Incorporate effective use of graphics, fonts, builds, animation, and transitions.

Change the layout for one or more slides.

Deliver presentation in a professional manner.

EMPLOYMENT SKILLS

The student will be able to:

Identify positive work practices (appropriate dress code for the workplace, personal grooming, punctuality, time management, organization.)

Demonstrate positive personal skills (e.g., communication, respect and teamwork.)

We will be using the Discipline Ladder.

Grading policy and scale

All students are expected to learn to type using the touch method and to increase their speed and accuracy as the semester progresses. This means focusing on learning where the alphabetic keys are without looking at the keyboard. This takes time and practice. Students are encouraged to practice at home if a computer is available. We will use the keyboarding software available on the school computers.
