    WelcometoENC3250ProfessionalWritingatUSFSarasotaManatee.Thoughnooneprobablytoldyou,thisisthemostimportantcourseyoutakeduringyourcollegecareer.Ifyouwanttobecomeanemployableworkerandifyouwanttobeabletoadvanceinyourcareer,youwillneedtolearnhowtowriteeffectively,clearly,andconciselyandtocommunicatemessagesaccurately,correctly,andpersuasively.Whatevercareeryouchoose,recentresearchshowsthattwothirdsofsalariedworkersinU.S.corporationshavejobsthatrequirewriting,andtheseworkersspendupwardsof30to40percentoftheirworkdaywriting.Furthermore,almostthreequartersofworkerscomplainaboutthepoorlywrittenemails,memos,andreportstheyreceivefromothers.Ifyoucannotcommunicateawrittenororalmessageeffectivelyatyourjob,youwastecorporatemoney.Ontheotherhand,ifyoumasteryourcommunicationskills,youwillsaveyourcorporationmoney,yourmanagersandcoworkerswillappreciateyourclearcommunicationskills,andyouwillgainselfconfidenceinyourabilitytobuildrelationshipsandincreaseproductivity.

    CourseDescription

    Thecourseisanintroductiontothetechniquesandtypesofprofessionalwriting,includingcorrespondenceandreports.Itisdesignedtohelpstrengthenskillsofeffectivebusinessandprofessionalcommunicationinbothoralandwrittenmodes.

    Professionalwritingisaformofcommunicationthatinvolveswriters(speakers)andreaders(audiencemembers)whorespondtooneanother.Professionaldocumentsdevelopedforvariousbusinessesusedescription,explanation,style,andvoiceinordertopersuadereaderstotakeaction.(Note:Actionisnotlimitedtoboycottingorrioting.Actioncanbeassimpleasbeingsympathetic.)Consequently,effectiveprofessionalwritersinthebusinessworldmusthave:

    GordonRuleThiscoursemeetstheFloridaStateBoardofEducationRuleNumber6A10.30.Inaccordancewiththisrule,studentswillcompletesixsemesterhoursofEnglishandsixsemesterhoursofadditionalcourseworkinwhichthestudentmustdemonstratecollegelevelwritingskills.AgradeofCorbetterisrequiredforcreditinGordonRuleclasses.

    2. Applyspecificreasoned,practical,andethicalcommunicationprinciplestocomposinganddeliveringtypicalbusinessandprofessionalmessages.

    3. Practicebusinesscommunicationskillsinbothindependentandcollaborativesituations.4. Developaprofessionalonlinepresence.5. Learntousewebtechnologiesforbusinesswriting,including:toolsforcollaboration,toolsforcreatingvisuals,tools

    EssentialsofTechnicalCommunicationQuizzes(15%ofoverallgrade):Thesequizzesaremandatory.Youwillread10chaptersoutoftheEssentialsofTechnicalCommunicationduringthesemesterandyouwillcompleteshortquizzestestingyourcomprehensionofthosechapters.

    CollaborativeGroupProject(40%ofoverallgrade):Duringthisproject,youwillworkwithyourgrouptoresearchanissuethatisdirectlyaffectingyourcommunity.Youwillcollectbothprimaryandsecondaryresearchaboutthisissue,proposeaplanofaction,andexecutethatplanofaction.Theseprojectsarefairlyopenforyouandyourgrouptodecide.Someexamplesoftheseprojectsmayinclude:

    ResearchingtheincreaseofheroinoverdosesanddeathsinManateecountyanddevisinganawarenesscampaignforthecommunity.Researchinganhistoricalgroupofpeopleoranhistoricalfigureinyourcommunityandwritingagranttoobtainfinancingtoconstructamemorial.Researchingaparticulardiseaseornonprofitorganizationandorganizingafundraisingeventforthatcauseor

    organization.Researchingaparticularlaworcityordinancethatiscurrentlybeingproposedandpreparingapresentationforacitycouncilmeetingthatwilleithersupportorargueagainsttheadoptionofthelaworordinance.Identifyingastructuralprobleminyourneighborhood(suchaspotholes,streetlightsthatareout,etc)andmappingthoseproblemstopresentaninteractivemaptoyourneighborhoodmeetingorcitycouncilrepresentative.IdentifyingaparticularproblematUSFSarasotaManateethatyourgroupwouldliketoseechangedandsubmittingaproposalorpresentationtoUSFSarasotaManateeSGA.Forexample,theadoptionofhealthiersnackoptionsinvendingmachines.

    Hangoutswithyourgroupmembers.YouwillrecordtheHangout,uploadittoYoutube,andsharethevideowiththeinstructor.Keepinmind,theseareprofessionalmeetings.Youarerequiredtodressappropriately,useappropriateverbaltones,andtouseworkappropriatelanguage.Thesehangoutswillinclude:1. Ahangoutforaninitialbrainstormingsession.Whatissuesdoesthegroupthinkisimportant,whyarethey

    important,andthegroupshouldcometoconsensustoresearchoneissuespecificissue.2. AhangouttodivideresearchandworkfortheTechnicalReport.Whowilldowhatwork?Whoisgoingtogather

    academicsecondaryresearch?Whoisgoingtointerviewstakeholdersforprimaryresearch?Whowillbeinchargeofeditinganddesigningthetechnicalreport?Whowillworkasthegroupleaderandhowwillthegroupleaderberesponsibleforkeepingmembersontask?Etc.

    3. Ahangouttodecideaplanofactionandvisualcommunicationdeliverable.Dependinguponyourplanofaction,whowillberesponsibleforwhatpartsoftheplan?Whowillpresentatameeting?WhowillcreateaTumblrpageforyourcause?etc.Additionallyduringthismeeting,youwillneedtodecidewhichtypesofvisualsyouwillneedforyourprojectandhowwillyoumakethemeffective.

    4. Ahangouttodecompressandreflectafteryoucompleteyourproject.Whataboutyourprojectwassuccessful,whatwaslesssuccessful,whatdidyoulearnasagroup,etc.

    2. Initialproposal(10percentofprojectgrade):Intheinitialproposalyouandyourgroupmemberswilloutlineaproblemfacingyourcommunity,youwillcreateaplantoresearchthatissue,youwillidentifypotentialstakeholdersfortheproblem,andyouwillcreateatimelineforcompletion.

    3. ProgressReport(10percentofprojectgrade):Yourgroupwillsubmitareportoutliningwhatinformationyourgrouphasgatheredaboutyourissueandwhatplanofactionofyoubelievemaybeusedtointerveneinthatissuetocreatepositivechange.

    4. TechnicalReport(20percentofprojectgrade):Thetechnicalreportwilldemonstratethatyouandyourgroupmembershaveclearlydefinedacommunityissue,havecompletedappropriateprimaryandsecondaryresearchaboutthatissue,andhaveproducedalogicalandreasonableplanofactiontoconsultonthatissue.

    5. VisualCommunicationDeliverable&Memo(20percentofprojectgrade):Duringyourproject,youandyourgroupmemberswillneedtocreatesomesortofcommunicationvisual.ThiscouldtaketheformofaPowerPoint,alogo,aflyer,apamphlet,orsomesortofdigitalcampaign.Youwillberesponsiblefordesigningthisvisualcommunicationdeliverableandalsocreatingamemothatrhetoricallyjustifiesthevisualdesignchoicesyouandyourgroupmembersmade.

    6. FinalReport(20percentofprojectgrade):Thefinalreportwillrecycleportionsofyourtechnicalreportandwillalsoincludetheresultsoftheplanofactionyoucompleted.Youwillidentifywhataboutyourplanworkedandwhatdidn't.Itwillalsoincludefutureplansofaction.Lastly,youwillindependentlysubmitareviewofyourgroupmembersandtheirworkthroughoutthesemesterandproject.
