    Textbooks:

"Fixed Income Analysis" by F. Fabozzi, Wiley, ISBN: 0-470-05221-XDescription:

Fixed Income investment is the core basis of financial portfolios for both individuals and

institutions. These investment portfolios include mutual funds, retirement pension funds,

hedge funds, social security funds, insurance funds, endowment/charity funds, trustfunds, private equity, and others. The goal of this course is to provide students a strong

foundation for valuing Fixed Income securities and portfolio management. That is,

financial valuation and its application to portfolio management is the main focus of FIN

    493.

    Expected learning outcomes:

    Students are expected to:

Be familiar with basic characteristics of fixed income securities and risk associatedwith fixed income investment.

Learn methods of fixed income valuation and the theory of interest rates. Understand the use of fixed income securities for asset allocation and portfolio

    optimization.

Apply valuation tools to practical examples; particularly, those questions in theCFA exams.

    Reading in Textbook:

The textbook is the basic source of information for the course. It is important to note that

students must read and become thoroughly familiar with the assigned materials (Text &

Exercise Problems) before coming to the class. My lecture focuses on discussion of the core

concept of text materials based on the assumption that all students have carefully read the

assigned chapters according to the enclosed Class Schedule.

    Testing and Grading:

There are three examinations in total including the Final exam. Exam #1, Exam #2 and the Final

are weighted by 30%, 30% and 40% of your total grade, respectively. Grading policy is according

to the standard grade scale recommended by the university.
