Class Format: 73

This class is taught in the classroom with a combination of lecture, demonstration, question and answer, student 74 discussion, independent study, and hands-on lab. You are expected to spend at least 3 hours and 40 minutes each 75 week outside of class studying course material. You are expected to read and review all of the course material to be 76 covered each week before coming to class. 77 78

Participation: 79

You are expected to attend every class and to be on time. You must also logon to the class Canvas site at least once a 80 week. If an entire week goes by with no activity on your part either through attendance, email communication or 81 completion of a graded event you will be dropped from the class. It is therefore imperative that you let me know if 82 for any reason your participation in the class will be interrupted. It is your responsibility to keep up with the class 83 schedule and to complete graded events when they are available. Various graded events are available for specific 84 time periods. Graded events must be completed during the time they are available--no exceptions! Once dropped 85 from the class you will not be reinstated for any reason. Just logging on to the course software product LabSim PC 86 Pro is not sufficient to satisfy this logon requirement. You must logon to the class Canvas site at least once per week 87 in order to satisfy course attendance requirements. 88 89

Email Communication: 90

Any time you communicate with me via email you MUST put the course number (CIS 120) in the subject line of your 91 email. For example: “CIS 120 Question about disk drives”. IF YOU DO NOT PUT THE CLASS NUMBER IN THE SUBJECT 92 LINE I MAY NOT RECEIVE YOUR EMAIL SINCE I USE FILTERS ON MY EMAIL ACCOUNT. I have up to 210 students in five 93 different class sections during any given semester--it is difficult to tell what class you are in unless you specify in your 94 email. Also make sure your name is somewhere in the email--I can’t always tell who [email protected] is 95 …I’m sure you understand!—REMEMBER THIS—IT IS IMPORTANT! 96 97

Certification Exam Information: 98

Upon completion of this class students desiring to take the CompTIA A+ Certification exams should be prepared to 99 successfully pass the current A+ exams. Certification exams must be scheduled, paid for, and taken at an official 100 CompTIA Certification Exam Center. Further information about where to take the certification exam will be provided. 101 In addition to this class I suggest you review additional A+ Certification exam study material to include web-based 102 materials, study guides, sample practice question guides, additional reference material, and the CompTIA web site 103 prior to taking the exams. 104 105

Orientation Quiz: 106

In order for me to determine that you are correctly enrolled in this class, are active in Canvas, and are familiar with 107 class policies and procedures you are required to take an Orientation Quiz by 11:00 pm Wednesday of the first week 108 of class. See Canvas Announcements and the 1st week of the class schedule below for further information. The 109 Orientation Quiz is contained in the Week 01 link of the Modules menu item on the class Canvas site. Failure to take 110 this quiz by the due date will result in you being dropped from the class. 111 112

Graded Events: 113

This class consists of assignments and graded events contained in Canvas and LabSim PC Pro. These events must be 114 completed according to the class schedule attached to the end of this syllabus. The PC Pro Grading Document is also 115 attached to the end of this document and contains a list of all required and optional/not graded assignments for this 116 class. Carefully review this document--you cannot complete the course without referring to this document. Graded 117 events consist of the following: 118 119

LabSim Exam Practice Questions (graded). Exam practice questions are contained in each module. 120

You may take the exam practice questions as often as you like in order to increase your score. Your highest score is 121 recorded as your final grade for each of the exams. The exam practice questions will help you to answer the 122 questions contained in the optional PC Pro and A+ certification practice exams at the end of the course if you choose 123 to complete them. 124 125

LabSim Labs (graded). There are a total of 95 labs covering LabSim PC Pro material. Various labs will be 126

assigned throughout the semester. Many labs are not required. Check the PC Pro Grading Document at the end of 127 this course syllabus to determine which labs are required and which are optional. Optional labs will not be used to 128 compute your final class score. 129 130

Lab Notebook (graded). Lab assignments are an important part of hands-on, experiential learning. You are 131

required to complete approximately 30 hands-on labs in the classroom. There is a practical midterm and final exam 132 that requires you to demonstrate hands-on proficiency. In order to organize lab material each student must maintain 133 a Lab Notebook that is professional, well-organized, and uses tabs. There are two exams based on your Lab 134 Notebook and the notebook is graded in two parts. 135 136 The notebook must contain the following: 137
