Class Format: 86

This class is taught entirely online with a combination of reading, video presentation, demonstration, question and 87 answer via email, student discussion via the Discussion Board, independent study, and interactive online labs. You 88 are expected to spend appropriate time during each class week studying class material and completing graded 89

Any information above may change at the discretion of the instructor at any time. This course adheres to the policies outlined in the Cuyamaca College catalog. For further information, see Academic Policies stated in the catalog. cis120--s18--syllabus--online--5152--12--week--labsim--220-901--902--with-pc-pro-grading-doc - 3 - 1/21/2018 9:27 PM

assignments. You are expected to read and review all of the course material to be covered each week and to keep up 90 with the class schedule attached to the end of this syllabus. 91 92

Participation: 93

You must logon to the class Canvas site at least once a week. If an entire week goes by with no activity on your part 94 either through attendance in Canvas, email communication or completion of a graded event you will be dropped 95 from the class. It is therefore imperative that you let me know if for any reason your participation in the class will be 96 interrupted. It is your responsibility to keep up with the class schedule and to complete graded events when they are 97 available. Various graded events are available for specific time periods. Graded events must be completed during 98 the time they are available--no exceptions! Once dropped from the class you will not be reinstated for any reason. 99 Just logging on to the course software product LabSim PC Pro is not sufficient to satisfy this logon requirement. You 100 must logon to the class Canvas site at least once per week in order to satisfy course attendance requirements. 101 102

Email Communication: 103

Any time you communicate with me via email you MUST put the course number (CIS 120) in the subject line of your 104 email. For example: “Subject: CIS 120 Question about disk drives”. IF YOU DO NOT PUT THE CLASS NUMBER IN THE 105 SUBJECT LINE I MAY NOT RECEIVE YOUR EMAIL SINCE I USE FILTERS ON MY EMAIL ACCOUNT. I have up to 210 106 students in five different class sections during any given semester--it is difficult to tell what class you are in unless you 107 specify in your email. Also make sure your name is somewhere in the email--I can’t always tell who 108 [email protected] is …I’m sure you understand!—REMEMBER THIS—IT IS IMPORTANT! 109 110

Certification Exam Information: 111

Upon completion of this class students desiring to take the CompTIA A+ Certification exams should be prepared to 112 successfully pass the current A+ exams. Certification exams must be scheduled, paid for, and taken at an official 113 CompTIA Certification Exam Center. Further information about where to take the certification exam will be provided. 114 In addition to this class I suggest you review additional A+ Certification exam study material to include web-based 115 materials, study guides, sample practice question guides, additional reference material, and the CompTIA web site 116 prior to taking the exams. 117 118

Orientation Quiz: 119

In order for me to determine that you are correctly enrolled in this class, are active in Canvas, and are familiar with 120 class policies and procedures you are required to take an Orientation Quiz by 11:00 pm Wednesday of the first week 121 of class. See Canvas Announcements and the 1st week of the class schedule below for further information. The 122 Orientation Quiz is contained in the Week 01 link of the Modules menu item on the class Canvas site. Failure to take 123 this quiz by the due date will result in you being dropped from the class. 124 125

Graded Events: 126

This class consists of assignments and graded events contained in Canvas and LabSim PC Pro. These events must be 127 completed according to the class schedule attached to the end of this syllabus. The PC Pro Grading Document is also 128 attached to the end of this document and contains a list of all required and optional/not graded assignments for this 129 class. Carefully review this document--you cannot complete the course without referring to this document. Graded 130 events consist of the following: 131 132

LabSim Exam Practice Questions (graded). Exam practice questions are contained in each module. 133

You may take the exam practice questions as often as you like in order to increase your score. Your highest score is 134 recorded as your final grade for each of the exams. The exam practice questions will help you to answer the 135 questions contained in the optional PC Pro and A+ certification practice exams at the end of the course if you choose 136 to complete them. 137

Any information above may change at the discretion of the instructor at any time. This course adheres to the policies outlined in the Cuyamaca College catalog. For further information, see Academic Policies stated in the catalog. cis120--s18--syllabus--online--5152--12--week--labsim--220-901--902--with-pc-pro-grading-doc - 4 - 1/21/2018 9:27 PM

LabSim Labs (graded). There are multiple labs covering LabSim PC Pro material. Various labs will be assigned 139

throughout the semester. Many labs are not required. Check the LabSim PC Pro Grading Document at the end of this 140 course syllabus to determine which labs are required and which are optional. Optional labs will not be used to 141 compute your final class score. Work through them if you wish but they are not required. 142 143

Midterm Exam (graded). There is a Midterm Exam that covers the beginning half of course material 144

covered in the class. The exam is multiple choice. If you are unavailable to take the exam (due to a legitimate 145 reason) you must notify me prior to the exam date. If you take the exam for any reason other than the time it is 146 normally scheduled without notifying me ahead of time your exam results will be graded on a 75% scale. 147 148

Final Exam (graded). There is a Final Exam that covers the second half of course material covered in the 149

class. The exam is multiple choice. There is no make-up opportunity for this exam. 150 151

Optional Items: 152

Practice Certification Exams (optional). There are three practice certification exams contained in 153

LabSim PC Pro. The exams are the PC Pro Certification Practice Exam (simulation exam) and two A+ Certification 154 Practice Exams (multiple choice and simulation). These exams are optional, not required for the course, and if you 155 decide to take the practice exams the scores you receive will not be included in your final course score. You may take 156 these exams one time. 157 158

Hands-On Labs (optional). There are 30 hands-on, in-class labs assigned only to the on-campus section of 159

the class. The online section of this class is not required to complete the hands-on labs contained in each weekly 160 Module of Canvas. You may complete the labs if you wish on your own but they will not be graded or turned in. The 161 labs are contained in the course Canvas site since the site is used by both the on-campus and the online sections of 162 the course. If you choose to complete the labs Cuyamaca College is not liable for any damage to any computer you 163 wish to use. Once again the labs are strictly optional for the online class. 164 165

Class Schedule (see next page): 204

The following schedule is provided to keep you on track throughout the semester. You should use it throughout the 205 semester to gauge your progress in the class and to ensure you are covering all of the material. Students are 206 required to complete all assignments during the weeks indicated in the schedule. Failure to complete all assignments 207 when they are available will result in a zero grade. Note: keeping track of your score (total points) may be difficult in 208 the LabSim product. The class schedule (next page) contains a column where you can keep track of your scores as 209 graded events (labs and exam questions) are assigned.
