ADJUDICATOR PROFILES:

Calvin is a voice teacher and researcher based in Auckland. He has worked with a wide range of singers and voice types – from you to aged voices. Calvin teaches at several Auckland High Schools, working with developing voices in solo and choral mixed-genre contexts. He also works with adults in his private studio who have had history of vocal injury and/or abuse and works to restore a healthy balance of strength and suppleness to the vocal mechanism and singing instrument. His pedagogy focuses on vocal function and diagnosis of vocal-technical issues. Calvin lectures at the University of Auckland in laryngeal anatomy and function. Calvin’s master’s research focused on singing and teaching through adolescent voice change. His current PhD research narrows that scope to female adolescent voices in particular.

PIANO & INSTRUMENTAL: Geoffrey Coker, Wellington, MA (Cambridge), BMus (Victoria), LTCL, LMusTCL, AIRMT

After getting a taste for opera in the boys’ chorus of the New Zealand Opera Company he later sang principal in premiere seasons of operas by David Farquhar and Dr Douglas Mews, and in modern revivals of operas by Caldara and John Eccles.

Geoffrey’s introduction to singing was as a boy chorister in the choir of St Mary's Church Karori. After graduating from Victoria University he was awarded a Choral Scholarship to King's College Cambridge where he sang in the Choir under both Sir David Willcocks and Sir Philip Ledger, later again performing with both of these conductors in concerts in New Zealand. While at Cambridge he studied singing with the English Counter-tenor, Paul Esswood, and Composition with Alan Ridout. While a member of the King’s College Choir he took part in eight recordings for the EMI and Argo labels, two programmes for BBCTV, two concerts as part of the Aldeburgh Festival and toured Belgium, Canada, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria.

Geoffrey Coker's appointments as organist include fifteen years as Organist of St Peter's Church, and eight years as Organist at Old St Paul's in Wellington. His carol arrangements have been published by Fagus-Music, and recordings of them have been released on Raven CDs.

He retired from his lectureship at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University, in 2015 but continues as an international music examiner with Trinity College London and during the past three years has examined in India, the UK, Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Oman, and Thailand, as well as in New Zealand. TEST POEMS

Under 10 years – Class 10B

The Bicycle James Brown

I have always been lucky.

When I was seven my parents gave me a red bicycle.

I rode it every day until it became a part of me.

It had a basket on the front, and my father attached a bell to make doing the deliveries more noticeable.

Pedalling up hills pushed me so far inside my head that only reaching the top could bring me back out.

Going down, my mouth would open as the world became flocks of many-coloured birds soaring into flight.

I loved that bicycle.

Lying in bed listening to rain sheet against the window and knowing that tomorrow it was Monday,

I would get up and go

into the hall and stare at it, consoled by the standing of its beautiful silence.

Under 12 years – Class 12B

A Ghost Story

by John Mole

When you have come home and it’s raining

And there’s nobody in

And the kettle’s switched off but still steaming

And the biscuit tin

Is full of biscuits (your favourite kind)

And the beds have been made

And you look in the fridge and you find

Everything splendidly arrayed

For your best meal ever but when you call

Nobody answers and even the cat

(Who doesn’t like rain) is not in the hall

Or the kitchen upstairs or anywhere at all

And there’s no message left on a table or the doormat

And the damp patch seems to have grown larger on the wall

Then you have to admit it at last – you’re afraid

No not that they’ve gone and left you behind

But that you yourself have been delayed

And that somehow someone broke into your mind

Before you got home, and you’ll have to begin

All over again, that you’ve woken from dreaming

And nothing has changed except nobody’s in

(Not even the car) and it’s still raining.

Under 14 years – Class 14B

The Monkey

Carol Ann Duffy

One wrong turn and I was in the piazza from Hell

Where a rogue clamped a small monkey onto my back.

It groomed my hair, gently, as he grinned with one tooth,

demanding money, and the monkey swung round

to nestle in my arms like a baby.

Then the worst happened: I bonded.

500 pounds later, back at the hotel, I shmoozed a travel crib

from the concierge. The monkey loves its bath, splashed,

played; but bit the toothbrush in half then ran up the curtain.

Once a mother, always. I crooned, perhaps I had a wicked childhood

from The Sound of Music, and the monkey grew curious, quiet, crept

closer, I tickled its soft back till it slept.

There are good schools here, I have rented a pleasant house,

with a high-walled garden; turned vegan. The monkey

shows a real aptitude for finger-painting, gym, percussion,

and will sit quietly watching The Jungle Book while I work.

I am re-writing Aesop’s Fables from the point of view of the creatures:

The World’s Woof.

At night - - toys tidied, all safe, house hushed --

I sip my banana daiquiri and marvel the possible;

the road not taken etc; the drunkenness of things being various,

bright insights in the darkness only poetry can align.

As for my University Professorship, I shall resign.

All best wishes to the new laureate. The monkey is mine.

And What If After So Many Words

Cesar Vallejo

And what if after so many words,

the word itself doesn’t survive!

And what if after so many wings of birds

the stopped bird doesn’t survive!

It would be better then, really,

If it were all swallowed up, and let’s end it!

To have been born only to live off our own death!

To raise ourselves from the heavens toward the earth

carried up by our own bad luck,

Always watching for the moment to put out our darkness with our shadow!

It would be better, frankly,

if it were all swallowed up, and the hell with it!

And what if after so much history, we succumb,

not to eternity,

But to those simple things, like being

at home, or starting to brood!

What if we discover later

all of a sudden, that we are living

To judge by the height of the stars

off a comb and off stains on a handkerchief!

It would be better, really,

If it were all swallowed up, right now!

They’ll say that we have a lot

of grief in one eye, and a lot of grief

in the other also, and when they look

a lot of grief in both…

Well then!...Wonderful!...Then…Don’t say a word!

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include:

* A professional is someone whose primary employment is being paid to perform or work in the performing arts. For the present purposes, being a student constitutes “primary employment” and therefore is not seen as a Professional. For the Student who receives payment for participation, either teaching or performing, this should not impose professional status on a person if it is by way only of an occasional bonus or benefit rather than their principal means of earning a livelihood. The exception to this is a participating teacher who may perform.

** As some Societies split their dance genres and run large Competitions with different Judges and/or at different times of the year, they will be able to nominate more than one Troupe to represent their Society.

** If a Society has 25 or more Troupes that enter and compete for a Troupe Nomination, then they are entitled to offer an additional Nomination. This applies to every multiple of 25 Troupes that enter and compete for a Troupe Nomination. Therefore – 1-24 Troupes = 1 Nomination 25 Troupes = 1 additional Nomination

50 Troupes = 2 additional Nominations

75 Troupes = 3 additional Nominations

The adjudicator will determine that the Troupe has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Troupe Finals.

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include:

• A demonstration of adequate preparation

• An authority of performance

• A performance with a level of expertise commensurate with a national final competition.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any Troupe, then NO nomination will be made.

The nominated Troupe is responsible for paying the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $250.00 incl gst.
