    Required materials: 1) Viva by Jose Blanco and Philip Redwine Donley, VistaHigher Learning,2) valid student password for the SupersiteInstructor editions of the textbook will not be allowed in class!

    Recommended materials: 501 Spanish Verbs by Christopher Kendris (available incollege bookstore)(Recommended if you plan on continuing with Spanish)I recommend limiteduse of a Spanish dictionary for this class. (Merriam-Webster orUniversity of Chicago)Course description and objectives: Objectives:

    The student will expand his/her grammar, vocabulary, conversational abilities, andcultural awareness of Spanish language and people.

    4 credits

    50% Tests/Quizzes/Exam20% Participation/Attendance (Just being here is not enough) (10 points each session)20% Text work/Workbook/Listening Activities/Reading Activities10% Computer (Supersite)

    On tests & quizzes: most spelling errors of only one letter are worth a half point,except for verbs, which are marked completely wrong if spelled wrong. Questions in

    the language are to be answered in complete sentences.

    Attendance If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to get notes,assignments, etc. You will not be given extra time to turn in assignments. If youchat in English, do homework, text message, etc., during class, you will be asked toleave and lose participation points.

    Testing policy: Makeup tests/quizzes are discouraged. A maximum of one makeupquiz/test

    per semester will be allowed. You must notify the instructor of your absence andreason in writing (bring a doctors note/note from court, etc) immediately uponmissing a quiz or test or you will not be allowed to make it up. You are notguaranteed a makeup. Makeup tests/quizzes are generally harder than the original!If you miss the final exam, you will not be allowed to make it up. There will be avocabulary/spelling test at the beginning of the class (see schedule). If you are tardy,

    you will not be allowed to make up the quiz.

    Homework: There will be due dates for Supersite activities for each chapter.Please be sure to check the syllabus AND the Supersite for those dates. If anyportion of the assignment is copied, or if you use a translator, you will receive a zerofor the whole assignment. Failure to follow any of these directions will result in areduction of points for the assignment. Homework may be accepted 1 class periodafter its due date for half credit. (check w/ me first) After that, no credit will be given.

    **Please identify all assignments, tests, quizzes, etc, with 1 your FULL name, 2 timeof your class, and 3 quiz number or page number, where appropriate.

    Extra credit will be offered after mid-term. You must complete at least 85% of yourhomework in order to receive extra credit.

    Academic honesty: (from the college catalog) St. Clair County Community Collegeholds high ideals of academic and personal honesty and expects every student to dolikewise. Dishonest acts like cheating, lying, and plagiarism will not be tolerated.Instances of academic dishonesty will be treated as serious offenses. Studentsinvolved in activities such as cheating and /or plagiarism will be subject todisciplinary action. (This includes use of any type of translator, whether electronic orhuman)In addition, "working together" on homework is considered cheating and will result ina zero for the assignment.Learning a language takes a lot of time and practice! You should study and practicevocabulary and grammar nightly. You should also read the lessons prior toclass.

    Tutoring is available for this class. A schedule will be posted as soon as it isavailable. The schedule is also on SC4s website.Students with specialneeds/disabilities should contact Nancy Pecorilli in the AcademicAchievement/Student Learning Center at 989-5555. You will need to providedocumentation to receive services.

    Electronic Devices: Phones, iPods, must be off and away. Special exemptions willbe made for emergency situations if requested and explained before class. Cellphones and beepers should be turned off or set for silent mode during class time.Laptops are not to be used in class, unless special permission is given by yourinstructor. MP3 players are not to be used during class time.No cell phones or other electronic devices out during tests and quizzes or I will have

    to assume you are cheating and give you a zero.
