Professor: Dr. Shannon Donovan, BA, MFS, DBA103 Harrington, 1-508-531-2684, [email protected], website: *** All class informationwill be available on Blackboard (http://plato.bridgew.edu).***

Office Hours: Office hours will be on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 9:00 am to 9:30 am, from11:00 am to 12:30 am, and from 1:45pm to 2:15pm; and on Wednesday’s from 2:45pm to 3:15pm

and from 8:40 pm to 9:00 pm. I will also be available on various other days throughout thesemester for office hours which I will post on Blackboard with advanced notice. There will also

be phone/virtual office hours, if requested. I will ask that you request virtual office hours by e-mailing me 2 to 3 different days and times you would be available with an internet

connection/phone. I will e-mail you back with a web link to the virtual office and the date andtime. I respond quickly to e-mails and BlackBoard postings, usually in less than 12 to 24 hours

unless I am away and you would be notified about that on BlackBoard. All general questionsconcerning the course or its content should be asked on the BlackBoard discussion board/ forumfor the benefit of everyone. (For example a question such as: Is there a quiz on Monday or why

did you use a 10% interest rate in problem 2 of chapter 10, are BlackBoard questions-as othersmay be interested in the answer.) E-mails and phone calls should be restricted to personal issues

between the instructor and the student. (For example, to arrange a virtual office hour or phone call

or discuss a grade.) If you get a return email saying “Use BlackBoard” or “BB”, that means to please ask this question on BlackBoard, not by email. I also ask that in all correspondence in the

form of emails and phone calls please give your name and which course you are in. Please bespecific. Not just “in your finance course” or even “in you managerial Finance class”, but “I amJoe Smith in your Wednesday 3:15 Managerial finance class”. It will make it much easier to

locate you. Also, if it is a phone call please give the phone number and the times you are

available.

Course Description: This course explores the decision processes involved in the securing of longterm physical corporate assets, or in committed long term intangible assets, including spreadsheet

analysis of cash flows, tax implications, decision making criteria, risk analysis and thecomputation of cost of capital.

The ability to do spreadsheet assignments are important and basic accounting courses andmanagerial finance are a prerequisite. ACFI 385 is a prerequisite.

Method: Instructional methods employed may include lecture, cases, skill-building exercises,

problem solving, student presentations, spreadsheets, participation in Blackboard discussions,

experiential projects and other activities. These events heighten understanding of the coursematerial. The student’s preparation before class and serious participation in these activities willcontribute to learning in this course.

Each chapter and each class will build upon one another in this course, so students need to be prepared prior to each class. If you find yourself falling behind, please see me right away. Asyou can see from my schedule above, I am available often and in many different formats (class,Blackboard, office, phone and e-mail), so there is no excuse for you not to contact me. If you

have a question that is general in nature, one where the entire class might be interested in theanswer, I prefer you use Blackboard rather than e-mail me directly.

Student Evaluation

1. Class and Blackboard Participation 5%2. Online homework 10%3. Online quizzes 10%

2. Midterm Exams 15%3. Comprehensive Final 25%4. Group Case Project/Presentation 20%5. Spreadsheet Project(s) 15%

1.  Class Participation: Attendance, timeliness, preparation of assigned readings, andconstructive comments and activity during class sessions are included in ClassParticipation. Assigned readings, problems, and cases should be done prior to the classmeeting for which it is assigned in the schedule (below) or in class. Participation in in-

class activities is necessary for enhanced learning in the course. Quality participation ismore important than mere attendance. Participation is graded in each class and includes

preparation of the material, thoughtful questions, and insights. The text provides thefoundation of knowledge for class activities and discussion. The course assumes that thestudent has read the text and that the student’s role is active and dynamic. The final grade

in this area will reflect the student’s oral contribution to the classroom learningenvironment.

Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class, however all discussionshould be directed to the professor and the class in general. No talking among classmates

Page 3: Syl Lab Us Spring 14 Wed

outside this discussion will be tolerated; it is distracting to the professor and the otherstudents in the classroom and it is rude. This will count highly towards your participation

grade.

Attendance is an integral part of this course. Some material for which you will beresponsible is not included in the text. Two absences will be allowed, for every two

absences beyond the allowed, the lowering of a student grade by 1/3 grade will result. For example if cumulative grade is “B” and you miss four classes, your final grade will

be lowered to a “B-“. Success in this course requires attendance and should require apreparati on level of 6-10 hour s outside class WEEKLY .

Participation and attendance is important. Each chapter builds on the other and there will

be information and discussion given in class that will be included in exams and is not inthe text. You will be responsible to get every assignment, so it is advised that you

exchange phone numbers or e-mails with classmates if you miss class and checkBlackboard often.

Blackboard Participation: Blackboard participation in an onsite course is simply an

additional way to earn participation. If you are uncomfortable asking and answeringquestions in class, you may use the Blackboard discussion board for both and I willconsider it part of class participation. I encourage you to answer each others questions on

Blackboard. It is a win/ win situation. You get to show me how much you know, the person asking the question gets a quick answer, and you both get participation credit. Inany case you are all responsible for everything on Blackboard and part of the class

requirement is to check on Blackboard at least three times per week.

2.  Online End of chapter quizzes: These quizzes are located on MyFinanceLab onwww.pearsonmylabandmastering.com  . These quizzes are timed, can only be taken twiceand must be taken by the date indicated, Monday’s at midnight (the quiz grades will be

averaged). There are sample tests you can take to prepare. These grades will count

towards your grade. I strongly suggest you not wait until the last minute to take the quiz(ex. Monday at 11pm) and you use a secure internet connection. If you lose your internetconnection, you may email me to reset the quiz (you must start it again), but I will

probably not be waiting for your email at 11pm on Monday so plan ahead. If you lose

your connection on the first try, go right to the second try after you email me –  that wayyou can take it at least once if I do not get your email in time. Also, I can see how longyou spend on the quiz and if you have spent more than 70% of the allotted time then Iwill not reset the quiz but grade what you have completed. And remember you do get todrop the lowest 2 quiz grades. When you finish the quiz your grade will be available but

not the entire quiz. Once the due date has pasted then the entire quiz with your answersand the correct answers, if you got any wrong, will be available.

The deadline lines will not be changed except for extreme circumstances such as a deathin your family or documented sickness/hospitalization. Lose of internet connection, yourcar breaking down, a trip, etc. are not reasons I will accept. The entire course is availableto you now and you have two grades to drop for normal circumstances already.

.

3.  In Class and Online Homework: The homework problems for the orientation, thereview, and for each chapter will be on line with www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com .

This is not a group assignment.  A certificate of authorship should be signed and handed in withthe assignments. Students who do not adhere to this rule will receive a grade of zero and have aletter written to the dean and to the Vice President of Academic Affairs. Information to help with

these assignments will be under the Projects tab on Blackboard.

***The format of the title for anything submitted electronically is: Lastname. firstname. Course

number.sec.nameassignment. For example, if I were emailing me the first assignment the titleof the file would be: Donovan.Shannon.385.006.assignment1.docx. ****If this format is not

used, then 3 points will be taken off your grade.***

IMPORTANT:  There is no extra work or extra credit. There is plenty of work in the courseas it is laid out for you to master the material and get a good grade. Please pay attention todeadlines and ask questions early rather than waiting until the last minute.

Also, there is a phone number and e-mail that I have provided. There should be no excuse that you could not reach me. Additional Notes on MyFinanceLab (MFL)

To learn how to use MFL:

There are a few ways to get comfortable with MFL

1.  There is a PDF on BlackBoard that gives all the details for starting with MFL. Also Ihave included the link to the online version of this PDF.

One page you should make sure you review is page 9 about the homework vs quiz and text mode.In the homework mode on the left hand side you will see learning aides that will help you answeryour homework problems. Please explore these, especially in the algorithmic numeric problems. These aides will solve the problem for you using one set of numbers and then give you a new

problem with different numbers to solve on your own. The quizzes and test do not have learningaides, only the homework.

Link to Getting Started with MFL Document (Also on BlackBoard)http://help.pearsoncmg.com/xl/get_started/student/mmnd/mfl/get_started_stu_mmnd_mfl.pdf

The orientation section on MFL will also help here.

2.  Go to the main page of MFL: www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com

On that main page on the bottom on the left, it says For Students. Click on Getting started. There is a video on how to register. You may register for free for 17 days but you will need tomake a payment by the 17th  day to stay on MFL.

Also on this page is information on system requirements and on how to get support help withPearson.Unfortunately, I cannot help you with technical issues with MFL; however if you document that

you have tried to fix a technical issue with Pearson 3 times with no positive outcome than pleaseemail me and I can see if our Pearson Representative can help. I ask you to try technical support

online first because most of the time they can help and we don’t have to over use ourrepresentative, but occasionally (like once or twice per 100 students) we need the help of ourPearson representative.

3.  Study Plan –  I do not require the Study plan but if you wish extra practice on problem

please feel free to use the Study plan.

4.  Quizzes and Tests –  Once you start a quiz or a test, you cannot switch out of a quiz or a

text to view any other page while you are taking the quiz or test, or test/quiz will shut

down. So you cannot pull up your email, or notes or even the ebook while taking a

test/quiz. The test/quiz will warn you, so do not tell me you didn’t understand that you

couldn’t do that or that it was Pearson’s fault.
