RESEARCH INTERESTS

My long-term goals are to increase knowledge of the virulence, transmission and dissemination of

mucosal pathogens, understanding the host-pathogen interaction, to develop rapid assays for surveillance

of pathogens and vaccines to prevent infectious diseases, and to train MS and PhD students. My lab uses

primarily genetic and molecular techniques to characterize pathogens, study their biofilm formation and

drug resistance capabilities as well as interaction with nanomaterials and to characterize associated

Bacteriophages. Specifically, I am interested in:

1. Epidemiological investigation and molecular pathogenesis of commonly occurring pathogens

such as B. pertussis/parapertussis, V. cholerae, E. coli, C. jejuni, Salmonella spp, Shigella

spp, K. pneumoniae, P. aeroginosa, A. baumanii, S. auresu, M. tuberculosis & Control

(Using Phage and Nanomaterial)

2. Study of the molecular mechanisms of drug resistance in community and hospital acquired

infections

3. Study of host-pathogen interactions

4. Vaccine development

5. Microbial diversity & Metagenomics

6. Gut Microbiome

7. Detection and classification of pathogens using Microfluidics, waveguide and SPR

approaches

8. Structural studies of fluorescent molecules HriGFP & HriCFP and Developing Short and

stable effective reporter molecules

9. Glycoengineering & Glycoproteins

Research Highlights

First Pakistani to initiate the detailed sequencing projects of Diarrheal pathogens. The

sequencing project of more than 100 V. cholerae and first C. jejuni from Pakistan completed in

collaboration with Sanger Center, Oxford Univ. Exeter/LSHTM. Identification of novel

fluorescent Proteins HriCFP & HriGFP (Submitted to Genbank). These proteins have vast

potential applications for researchers being the shortest molecular fluorescent proteins. My work

in field of infectious diseases such as whooping cough and Diarrhea are of significant importance

and will serve the basis of their control in future in Pakistan. My research on whooping cough

was covered by media/science division “Whooping Cough Resurgence in Sindh Province"

published in SciDev.Net: http://www.scidev.net/en/health/infectious-diseases/news/whooping-

cough-found-in-vaccinated-children-in-pakistan.)I am currently developing rapid strip test for

detecting Vibrio cholerae and developing control strategies using its natural predators i.e.

vibriophages. I am editor of various scientific journals and member of various national and

international societies/forums. I have delivered invited talks at various national and international

forums such as at training workshop, Department of Computer Sciences, Cambridge and also

chaired sessions at various national and international forums such as “Informatics & Basic

Science” at Microbial Forensics conference, Zagreb. My students won best poster awards on

many occasions such as UNESCO’s World Science Day; 6th Annual Public Health Scientific

Conference-Health Academy, Islamabad. Average impact factor of yearly publication for past 6

years is ~20 or above.
