Altivolo, one of the boutique stages of Harold Park, is to me the most important. Sitting in a prominent corner location, it forms a first impression and has the closest connection to existing terrace homes and apartments. For this reason it has been kept to a very low scale.

Whenever you design, but especially in a place like Glebe with such wonderful architectural heritage, you feel the weight of responsibility to get it right. Countless hours were spent at the site, watching people going about their daily lives, talking to neighbours and reflecting to be sure that the vision of Altivolo sat comfortably with the importance of its surrounds.

As well as paring back the scale, the design picks up the vertical rhythm of the surrounding terrace archetype. This has been achieved using portal frame features that break up the building and by introducing a series of courtyard entries with interesting fences and gates.

The choice of materials has also been influenced by the building’s neighbours; face brick and feature panelling is a prominent addition.

I wanted Altivolo to be a place where residents could feel a real sense of pride and community. Having lived in apartment buildings for most of my life, I know that by minimising the number of apartments per lift lobby you do get to know your neighbours and develop a real sense of belonging. Altivolo will do that.*

Designing the landscaping at Altivolo was an exciting and rewarding experience. We take a team approach at Aspect Studios, but when you’re leading the design it becomes more personal. It feels like my garden and has my design style imprinted on it.

I love taking materials and using them in unusual ways. This is what we have done with the bench seat that wraps around the base of the beautiful feature tree to become the central focus of the courtyard garden. The seat is quite sculptural and the circular form promotes the idea of people gathering together.

With its sense of intimacy and privacy, Altivolo’s courtyard garden has a very different feel to the adjoining future open space parkland. It is an area where we have been able to use a great palette of plants with broad leaves to create a lush garden providing residents with a beautiful outlook.

We were very conscious of the connection to the surrounding community so Altivolo features selected areas of green roof planters as well as small trees alongside the front courtyards to enhance the streetscape.*

I had the opportunity to collaborate with Mirvac to create a vision of how the residents could make Altivolo at Harold Park their own. I found myself drawn to lovely materiality for my choices. The images rendered here include some beautifully designed timber side tables and sofas, interesting light additions, feature rugs and lots of layering. I would love to live in any – or all – of them.

I believe anyone thinking of purchasing here can get a real feel for the inherent potential. As you browse through the next couple of pages you will see how I have added furniture and soft furnishing suggestions to the artist’s impressions of Altivolo interiors.
