tled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Much more than
a beachlover’s paradise, the island of Sint Maarten is teeming with natural,
cultural and human riches. Thanks to its climate and untouched natural heritage,
the island offers unparalleled year-round watersports and outdoor activities.

culinary delights and lively nightlife. Sint Maarten has its own unique identity,
making it THE perfect sunshine getaway.
WELCOME TOSINT MAARTEN!

Beachlife in St. Maarten
1 Great BayGreat Bay stretches along the boardwalk
of the main town Philipsburg. After a day
of duty-free shopping you can go for
a swim in the Caribbean Sea to cool off,
the calm blue water of Great Bay makes
an ideal swimming spot for all ages. Rent
lounge chairs, umbrellas and jet ski’s on
several spots. If you get hungry you can
easily grab lunch or dinner catering to all
taste buds at one of the many restaurants
with a view of luxury cruise ships entering
the bay.
2 Maho BeachLooking for a thrill? Head to Maho Beach
and be prepared for an experience and
view of a lifetime! This beach is located at
the Western end of the runway of Princess
Juliana International Airport thus provid-
ing a spectacular sight of departing and
incoming aircrafts. For those only interest-
ed in the view, make sure you place your
beach towel on the right or left side to the
runway on the beach. For those who love
the thrill, go to the middle of the beach,
stretch out your arms towards the sky and
be prepared to scream as airplanes glide
over your head as they arrive or blast sand
into the air as they depart.
The best time of the day to see the most is
between 1:30pm - 5:00pm. The 747’s and
Airbus 340 usually make an appearance
around 2:00pm and leave around 4:00pm.
3 Mullet BayMullet Bay is a favorite of locals and visi-
tors alike. Deemed one of the prettiest
beached on Sint Maarten. Pearly white,
wide and flat fringed with palm trees and
sea grapes it is truly a sandy paradise. Or-
37 beaches, each one decked with pearl white sand and surrounded by tur-quoise waters. Ranging from unspoiled, quiet shores to lively hubs of activity.
You can bask in the sun relaxing with a fresh-fruit cocktail in hand or go for an adventure and explore the shores surfing, diving, jetskiing, or sailing.

der lunch at one of the two local restau-
rants or have a BBQ as you may see local
families doing on their Sunday off. If you
explore the rocky coast to the left of the
ocean, you might find groups of kids jump-
ing off various cliffs into the water below.
Take a plunge yourself!
4 Grand CaseGrand Case Beach, or “Plage de Grand
Case” in French, is a pretty mile long while
sandy beach surrounded by an array of
restaurants offering authentic French and
local cuisine. From the beach you have a
wonderful view of neighboring island An-
guilla and Creole Rock, a great diving and
snorkeling spot on the island.
5 Orient BayOrient Bay is a favorite jetsetter and celebri-
ty hotspot. It is one of the largest and most
popular beaches located in the north east-
ern part of the isand. It offers a full range
of amenities including resorts, restaurants,
shops and watersport rentals. Feel like get-
ting rid of your clothes for the day and get-
ting rid of tan-lines? To the extreme right,
you can find a nudist beach resort
6 Pinel IslandCharming Pinel Island, is a tiny island on the
north end of St. Martin, just a five-minute
boat ride from shore. This is a must do on
your trip! Driving to the end of the road in
French Cul de Sac, you will find parking, a
shack that rents kayaks and a dock with a
ferry station. For just $10 including the re-
turn trip you can make your way to the little
island. Spend the day exploring, sunbath-
ing, picnicking and relaxing in the pristine
and shallow waters.
7 Baie RougeBaie Rouge is one of the most fabulous, in-
timate and quiet beaches. It’s a perfect spot
to spend a lazy afternoon. Take a walk along
the large stretch of pink hued-white sand,
the more you walk West, the less visitors
you will encounter. Have the local shacks
whip you up a few fresh fruit cocktails or
go for a snorkel. If you swim past the rocky
shoreline toward the East you will find a
cave through which you can snorkel and
just next to it a very small, private beach.

Philipsburg, St.Maarten’s capital
is just four 1-mile long, parallel
streets located between Great Bay,
a calm beach with view of incom-
ing cruise ships, and Salt Pond,
where salt was made many
years ago.
Philipsburg is a great shopping
district offering electronics,
leather, alcohol, perfume, linens,
jewelry, watches, handmade
crafts and more for great prices,
as St.Maarten is a duty-free is-
land. You can also try your luck at
a number of casinos. Explore the
narrow alleyways that lead you to
various directions towards more
stores, restaurants and charming
courtyards lined with flowers.
Enjoy the melting pot of rich cul-
tures and old world charm includ-
ing examples of traditional West
Indian architecture, including the
houses painted in pastel colors
with second-story verandas look-
ing out over the street.
Look out for the courthouse on
Front Street. The grand while
wooden structure built in 1793
now serving as a courthouse is an
important landmark. Head to the
museum, to learn more about the
islands history. Many artifacts are
on display including pottery from
the island’s original inhabitants, the
Arawak Indians. If you don’t mind
taking a longer walk, head to Fort
Amsterdam, built in 1631
on the peninsula between

To quench your thirst try a range

at the Guavaberry Emporium.
Guavaberry is the legendary folk
liqueur of Sint Maarten/St Martin.
It was first made here
centuries ago in
private homes and
became an integral part of local
culture & tradition. Whether you are
craving a burger or a high-class seafood-
meal Philipsburg has dozens of restau-
rants to have breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Head to the boardwalk where you can
dine and enjoy the magnificent views of
the Caribbean Ocean. A local and visitor
favorite is Holland House.
Their Ocean Lounge, an airy modern
erandah sty\zled European chic with
Caribbean flair offers an inspiring food
and wine menu with the freshest in-
gredients. The great chef and good ser-
vice with competent staff will make it a
memorable experience. The restaurant
is especially known for its fresh fish assort-
ment that changes with the seasons
but choosing the 3-course chef’s
menu is also a sure bet. Don’t for-
get to ask for a special Caribbean
drink, like the award winning
“Island lover”. Besides dining, the
boardwalk is a great place to hang

They are missing out. With
starting points at either
Point Blanche or Guana

by the fence of rocks from
the rolling waves of the

course a picnic!

La Belle Creole
Old ruins such as the sug-
ar mills and plantations,
some now hidden in the
forests, and the most cel-
ebrated old forts, like Fort
Louis overlooking Marigot
or Fort Amsterdam next to
Philipsburg are reminders
of the island’s long history.
A few of these ruins, do
not date back that far
ago, specifically the rem-
nants of destruction of
the 1995 hurricane Luis
can be found throughout
the island.
Though most are eyesores and
might be painful reminders,
there is one ruin that is striking.
La Belle Creole, a luxury resort
located at the southeast tip of
Marigot Bay. The large complex,
with dozens of buildings, has
been left to the elements for al-
most two decades. Overgrown
with vines, the empty multi-sto-
ry hotel makes a great setting
for a adventurous Caribbean
ghost-hunt.
Butterfly Farm

lush tropical rain forest amidst
flowers and trees, ponds and a
