O ur semi-annual Membership meeting is sche-duled for Friday, May 20th at 7:00 pm. By nowyou have received the agenda for the Call and,

as you can see, we have an extensive list of items for theMembership’s consideration. It is very important that youattend, if at all possible, to have your voice heard and castyour ballot.

The Benefit on the Bay Gala and Charity Bay Race held onApril 2nd and 3rd were a tremendous success due in nosmall part to the efforts of the Executive Chair JonHellings , Race Chair Will Sparks and their entire crew.Although the final numbers are not in as I write this, weexpect that these events will have raised more money forSan Diego Hospice and The Institute for PalliativeMedicine than many of our previous events. Still to comeis the Bottom Fishing Tournament on May 7th chaired byDick Templin and Rob Witters which will add signifi-cantly to our total contribution. The Membership is to becongratulated for their generous participation andcontributions.

In last month’s Mooring Line I indicated that a Wi-Fi systemfor internet access in the clubhouse and marina was beinginstalled. Unfortunately, the company contracted to install

this system has run intoproblems with some typeof electronic interferenceand must re-evaluate thetechnology necessary to satisfactorily provide Wi-Ficonnectivity. We will keep you informed as the workprogresses. In the interim there is still Wi-Fi internetavailable in the west end of the clubhouse (StaffCommodores and Challenger rooms) and library.

Attracting new members to the Club is critically importantto maintaining the Club’s vitality and functionality. TheMembership Committee is sponsoring a New MemberReception on June 3rd and this is an excellent opportunityto introduce your friends and colleagues to the Club andhear about all our activities. Anyone you think might beinterested in joining our Club is cordially invited. ArleneDixon, chair of the Membership Committee will be puttingout more information on the reception in the near future.

Finally, don’t forget Mother’s Day on May 8th. The Club willhold our traditional brunch from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. ChefKen Nash will prepare an extensive buffet menu that is sureto make you a hero with your mothers and spouses. Stopby the office or call to make your reservations. I

M y friend Mary Cooganlost her brave battlewith cancer on March

22. She fought ashard as she could, but in the end, cancerproved stronger. I am writing this articlefor a couple reasons. First, I miss myfriend and want to tell you a little bitabout this dynamic person. But secondly,and equally important, I believe that thelast few years with Mary has shown tome the best our great club can be.

Mary was born in Annapolis to ViceAdmiral Robert and Mary Coogan. Shetravelled with her Navy family from the

Chesapeake, up and down the Atlantic coast and toCalifornia, living also in Subic Bay, Philippines, and PearlHarbor, Hawaii. Since 1976 she lived in Coronado and San

Diego except for a two year sail aroundthe Pacific adding New Zealand, Australia,Tonga, and Fiji to her ports of call.Coogan worked for Union Bank for manyyears before her cruise and then spentover 18 years at the San Diego Zoo.

I first met Mary in 2001 when she wassailing with Ian Trotter on Thunderbox.She also sailed on Sea Maiden withCarolyn and Sandra Sherman. Maryjoined Southwestern in 2000 as aCompetition member. I knew she was a

W e extend our welcome toTerri and Judd Latherwho are joining as Regular

Members. Terri is new to sailing buthas enjoyed cruising with friends inSan Francisco, Seattle and San Diego.Judd has been sailing most of his lifeon Lake Huron in Michigan. Judd was

the Rear Commodore at the Bay City Yacht Club in Michiganand was active in coordinating various racing programs and isinterested in continuing that here at SWYC. Terri works at anon-profit healthcare organization, working mostly with HIVpatients. She was born in Missouri and moved to SanFrancisco at a young age. She enjoys music, photography andtraveling. Judd works as the Director of Portfolio Manage-ment at CoreLogic. He moved to San Diego in 2004 and isinterested in sailing, playing baseball, reading and traveling.

Welcome also to Geoff and Barbara Buckner who arejoining as Flag members. Geoff and Barbara were bornand raised in Colorado; both learned to sail at an early ageat the fledgling Navy Yacht Club in Fiddlers Cove. Geoff

enjoyed advancing to racing skipper, while Barbara likes

a casual sail on the Bay. They have lived in Point Loma for

20+ years and have been involved in the Junior Program

for over 4 years. Geoff is the liaison between the Point

Loma High School sailing team and the 8th grade PLHS

development team. They own two sabots, two kayaks, a

laser and more than 40 surfboards and a 17’ Boston

Whaler. They look forward to continuing their efforts with

the Junior Program and to build new relationships with

SWYC members.

great sailor. While bobbing around in separate boats waitingfor the start of a particularly windless Hot Rum, Ian Trotterand I hatched a plan to compete in the Lipton Cup. Maryhad to be on our team. We started sailing together shortlythereafter on J-OK and Mary has sailed with me in nearlyevery race I have competed in since.

2003 proved to be our year. I will never forget the joy in

Mary’s face when it dawned on her that we won (it didn’t

happen until a few minutes after we crossed the finish line).

Mary competed in every Lipton Cup practice and raced on

virtually every boat I have stepped on since.

As much as I’ll miss Mary on my boat, what makes Mary’s

story even more important to me came off the water in

more recent years. In 2009, Mary, on her father’s prodding,

joined Southwestern as a regular member. At the time, I was

involved with the Social Committee. Mary thought it might

be fun to start helping that group and volunteered as much

as she could setting up events, decorating, etc… In the

process, she met and became great friends with an entirely

new circle of friends in the club.

We learned of the severity of Mary’s illness shortly before

Christmas in 2009. Mary confided in me that she was afraid

of dying alone. We talked often and, as much as I could

assure her that this wouldn’t be the case, it really stunned

Mary to see the support she got shortly thereafter and

continuing through her most difficult days and all the way

to her last moments. Every day, and nearly every night,

Southwestern members were there for support, to offer a

shoulder to cry on, an ear to vent to, to hold her hand. Our

members, together with Mary’s sister Jane, her friend Moira

and the incredible group from Hospice allowed Mary

comfort and peace in this heartbreaking time.

Sandra, Kathy, Ian, Sandy, Mary, Craig, Polly,

Heidi, Frani, Rita, June, Gloria, Pat and Anne…your

love for Mary and the time you devoted to her is a

testament to how wonderful of people you are and how

proud Southwestern should be to have you as members. I

take great strength in knowing people like you are my

fellow members and, more importantly, my friends at

our great club. I

I could not do my job without the

help of the Dock Masters. They are

our eyes and ears on the waterfront

and are the first people on location

when something happens. They quietly

fix things when they go afoul and

contact me and others when something

in not right. Many a boat has been

saved because they were there when things have gone

wrong during inclement weather long before it gets to the

point of severe damage. They have pumped out many a

dingy from the rain and a few cockpits as well. They do all

of this quietly in the background only motivated by

keeping our docks a nice and safe place to be. I wish to

thank the Dock Masters for the job they do for we

sometimes take the work they do for granted. So when

you see them walking around the dock doing their good

deeds, please say thanks.

The most recent Coast Guard recreational boating statistics

(2009), point up a critical need for boater education. The

figures show that 2,656 recreational vessels were involved

in boating accidents nationwide, resulting in 1,655 injuries

and 326 deaths. The vessel operators involved in these

accidents had never taken a boating safety class. This year

National Safe Boating Week is May 21 - 27. The theme is

Wear It! reminding us to put on our life jackets when on

the water.

To get into the spirit of Safe Boating Week, on Saturday,

May 28th, with the help of the San Diego Power Squadron,

we will be offering Vessel Safety Checks here at the club.

A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your

boat confirming that it meets both federal and state

requirements for safety. No citations are issued and the

results of the safety check are not reported to any

enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display if

your vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel

Safety Check gives you a risk-free way to check that you

meet the legal minimums and to potentially avoid a

citation later. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) will be

performed at your boat – whether in a slip or in the

small boat yard by a certified Vessel Examiner and

usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending upon the size

of your boat. The items checked are life jackets,

registration and numbering, navigation lights, ventilation,

fire extinguishers, distress signals (flares, horn, etc.) and

battery cover and connections. All of these items are

currently required by state and federal laws and, if

missing or non-operating, can result in a citation if your

vessel is inspected by the Coast Guard.

What if I Don't Pass? If your boat does not pass, no

report is filed. Instead, you are provided a written report

that aids you in correcting any discrepancies noted. Often,

a quick trip to the local marine chandlery is all that is

necessary to obtain missing safety items and easily pass a

re-inspection.

So plan to come on by and sign up for a free Vessel Safety

Check. I’ll be serving up hot dogs, potato chips and

cookies all day for all of you who come on down and get

your boats inspected. There will be more details and times

to follow, so save the date. I

Commodore Dan and June Bush. Caz,7lbs 10oz & 21” long, arrived on FridayMarch 5th at 12:47 am. Caz’s Mom is

Michelle Bush and his Father is BrandonJacoby. In addition to Caz, they have a

28- month old daughter, June.

Summer Sailstice is the global sailing holiday celebrated

on the weekend closest to the summer solstice. This

international event was founded in 2001 to connect the

global sailing community in a fun, creative, multifaceted,

multi-location sailing holiday: cruisers, racers and

recreational sailors alike. They meet to celebrate the joy

of sailing and life on the water under sail. SWYC will be

the first in Southern Ca to join in the festivities.

This year at SWYC on June 18, we would like to see

EVERY sailboat away from the dock with

as many members on board the boats as

possible for a fun day of sailing, meeting

other members and enjoying beautiful

San Diego. More information and signup

sheets will be available as the time nears

but save the date. Remember, except for the food, it is a

FREE event! What more could you ask!

Nancy O’Brien and the Social Committee are planning a

Summer Solstice party on the lawn in conjunction with

Summer Sailstice. This party will include food, music,

dancing girls (that is if any girls want to dance) and just

a lot of fun. The food will start after a great day on the

water. So sailors, contact your angler friends and others’

you have not seen in awhile and LET’S GO SAILING!

Culinary Experience Extraordinaire!!by Lynda Russell

W ow!! Chef Ken put on a culinary show for my hubby,

Larry, and me! I was honored to have my name chosen for

Chef Ken’s March Birthday Table. Larry and I were

treated to a 4-course candle-light dinner in which Chef Ken

demonstrated his exceptional knowledge and talent as a professionally

trained Chef. With great success, he blended flavors we would never

think to combine. The beautiful presentation of each course certainly

enhanced our enjoyment as did Chef Ken’s detailed explanation of

what he was serving for each course.

Even days later, we are still in awe of the taste and presentation

experience we had. May you be so lucky to be selected for your special

birthday dinner presented by Chef Ken. Even if you aren’t lucky enough

to be selected, you still have the opportunity to enjoy Chef Ken’s talent

by partaking of the great dining room meals on the SWYC menu.

Chef Ken, Sharon Clark and Sean ensured we had a fun evening as

well as an exceptional dinner experience. It is wonderful to have a true

professional Chef at the Club. I

W e have worked out a special Memorial

Weekend for you beginning with Friday

Night Entertainment and the

Moondawgs in the bar. On Saturday, May 28, is

our prelude to the 70’s featuring the Urban Gypsys

as they bring us up to date with the seventies music,

including all the 70’s flare: lights, fog machine and

appropriate 70’s attire. The band will play in the

dining room from 6:30 to 9:30 so make your

reservations to dine in our Dining Room on May 28.

Last day to make reservations is May 25!

Depending on the response and/or interest of our

members, we will be having Movies on the Lawn

starting at dusk on Sunday, May 29. We will provide

snacks to those who attend the movies. On

Memorial Day, the club will provide a BBQ so be

sure and sign up for that!

Summer Solstice chaired by Nancy O’Brien in

conjunction with Sailstice is coming along nicely with

lots to do on June 18th! Breaking out with thesummer fun music will be Theo and the ZydecoPatrol and we’ll have a great summer fare, with cooldrinks and watching the sunset from SWYC’s lovelydeck. I have it on good authority that this year, we are

having good summer weather, so come join in the fun.Get out on the water and come back to summer fun!

Some things to look forward to this year as we try tochange up our club activities are: a Traditional 4thof July, Race Day at SWYC (July 30), Island BlissGetaway (August 20), a fun-filled Labor DayWeekend with a Sock Hop, and a Clam Bakecoming in October (October 22).

A ccounting Assistant Lori Abbond-Baclagan has been selected as Employee

of the Month for March! Most of you will not recognize Lori, a fairly new

employee hired in November, who is very quiet and unpretentious. What

Lori delivers is a super attitude of willingness to do whatever is asked of her. Her

attention to detail and accuracy in her job is excellent, and Lori is always looking

for ways to improve.

Raised in El Cajon by her grandparents, Lori and husband Robert are now living in

Chula Vista. Having dated Robert since she was eighteen, Lori married her longtime

boyfriend on the spur of the moment during a vacation to Hawaii. Lori and Robert

are now in the process of adopting their first child!

In her spare time, Lori volunteers at the San Diego Humane Society and the San

Diego Zoo. Needless to day, Lori loves her animals consisting of three dogs and

three cats. I just want to know if they all get to sleep on the bed! Asked what her

ambition in life is, Lori responds, “I just want to make this a better world, and I

believe everyone should treat each other with respect.”

W hen Jack Ottestad was 11 he made his firstboat out of a Cedar log that was alreadyhollowed out. This was a pretty good-looking

first boat; however, with the rounded bottom of a log, itwas a wee bit unstable. He used this on Hood’s Canal inWashington until a neighbor boy stole it and let it go.Number two boat was a rowboat that a resort sold to himfor 50 cents. Needless to say, it needed a lot of repairswhich Jack did with tin cans, nails and tar. Unfortunately,the same boy stole this boat, too. When Jack turned 12, hebuilt a boat out of Cedar steamed planks and made aclinker-built boat. During WWII, many barrage balloonswere sent up to keep enemy planes from coming into themilitary facilities. Jack was called upon by the military torow men out into the canal to retrieve the balloons as theyfell and return the men to the other side of the Canal. Notbad for a young fellow, except Hood’s Canal is two mileswide and he made $2 a trip which took most of the day.

Jack’s next boating adventure was with the Navy, followed

by moving to Chicago for a few years in the 60’s. Here

Jack and his family enjoyed playing around in Lake

Michigan in a 25-ft. inboard power boat. Many trips were

enjoyed going through locks and traveling through the

Chicago River down to Lockport which is a 49-foot drop.

Returning to California in 1964, they bought a small fishing

boat; then moved up to a 30-foot sailboat. This was so

enjoyable the family decided to buy a larger sailboat and

do some extended cruising which they did in 1973-1975.

As Jack says, they went to the end of Point Loma and

turned left, visiting the Baja peninsula, Mexico, Guatemala,

Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and several islands,

transited the Canal, visited several Caribbean Islands and

the wonderful and colorful Cuna Indians, re-transited the

canal and headed out to the Galapagos Islands. By now it

was time to return to San Diego and work. The trip home

was a straight rum run taking 26-1/2 days. It was a

wonderful trip and a wonderful experience.

Jack and Marsha Ottestad joined Southwestern Yacht

Club in 1972. They currently live in Genoa, Nevada, come

to San Diego often and still have the same boat, Jubilee on

D dock. I

W hile things are finally

beginning to warm up

in San Diego, our junior

sailors are in the final stretch of

school. The intensity in our academic

and sailing lives has been cranked up

over the past month and our sailors

have been doing exceptionally well!

Over the weekend of March 20th, our high school teams

all traveled to Santa Barbara to compete in one of the

major PCISA regattas, Gaucho,

which was held by the UCSB

sailing team. We knew the

weekend was going to include

torrential rains and breeze of 35

kts with gusts up to 40! The

weather was worse than we

thought - extreme was the

word. The high school sailors

and parents all braved unusually

cold, rainy weather with tricky

conditions. After a solid day of

racing Saturday, Sunday brought

the expected fierce winds along

with a downpour and surf that

would have made it impossible

to launch boats. This weather

ended up cutting the racing

short and when the second day

of the regatta was cancelled,

most sailors headed back to San

Diego early. We can be very

proud of the Point Loma and Torrey Pines sailors who

practice out of SWYC and had a very successful weekend

at Gaucho. We also had a great turnout at the SoCal which

gave our silver sailors a chance to sail out in the bay.

Saturday was a day of great racing, sunny weather, and

consistent breeze. Everyone had a great day as we

completed eight races. Matt Capetta and I placed first

from Bishop’s, while Cody Odou and Conor Porter

ended up 8th out of 26 boats. Dylan Elliot and James

Ziebarth led a SWYC team to an impressive 12th place,

Mercedes McPhee also had a successful day ending 18th,

with many impressive finishes throughout the day.

While our older sailors were up in Santa Barbara and

across San Diego, our sabot sailors all made their way up

to NHYC for the Spring Gold Cup. Everyone had a great

time this weekend with some crazy winds! Jack McGraw

finished 13th in A fleet while Nick Hettick placed 20th in

C2. Congratulations for an awesome weekend!

It’s been hard to keep up with Luke Kellerhouse these

days who has made it out to just about every junior regatta

this month, both crewing in 420s and CFJs as well as

skippering his laser! Congrats to a successful month, Luke.

We should all be inspired by your hard work!

starting at 6:30 and over at 7:30. Then on Sunday it is

the Dock Fishing Tournament. Great Prizes for everyone

and all are welcome.

catch of the month for

March. No weight slips

turned in, so I went dock fishin’ on

the last day of the month and nailed

a 1.75# spottie on my 3rd cast &

quit. Another easy 50 bucks. Let’s

get out there and round up the

fishies, people. Need to create some excitement around

here. Again, a bleak month for fishing.

Benefit on the Bay Bottom Fishing Tournament is on May

7. Give Rob Witters or Dick Templin, our co-chairs for

the tournament, a call. They will appreciate all the help

needed to put on a great tournament.

Rob Lane is the new secretary at the Marlin Club. He

will be holding court on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

from 1pm to 5pm at the Marlin Club. Drop in and keep

Rob company.

H APPY SPRING TO ALL ATSWYC FROM THE RACECOMMITTEE. The birds are

singing, the sun is shining (most ofthe time) and members everywhereare getting their house and/or boat inorder for all of the exciting springactivities that are always availablehere in San Diego.

The Race Committee has been every active since the lasttime we had a chat. On March 26, we finished the last ofthe Cabrillo series of four races with great food and lots ofcamaraderie. We were aboard S/C Jim Lonergan’s yachtCasa Delo Perro III with Dave Hardy serving as PRO. BobMiller did an amazing job as timer for the event whileLinda Hukill served as his instructor. The recorders forthis fabulous race were Anne Neiger and KeithRobertson. The flags were snapped by Peggy Crunican,Carol Herr, Chris Brzezinski and Angie Bartosik. DaveOlson pulled the trigger on the gun as the first boat ineach class sailed across the line to an exciting finish.

Last weekend was the club’s Charity Bay event and RaceCommittee was involved as we provided the committee

boat for the racing portion of this event. After a shortmeeting, we boarded Skipper Norm Rudenberg’sspacious yacht Ocean Star with equipment and enoughfood to last until the wee hours. Again, Dave Hardyserved a PRO and Linda Hukill assumed the role ofinstructor as Keith Robertson timed his first pursuit startrace. Nancy Geczy and Dick Hartman recorded theevent and signal flags were snapped by Pat Atkins andBob Miller. Ed Washington fired the gun as BurtBenjamin called the line.

As you know, this was a charity event and manyvolunteers offered to help. Additionally, I wish to thankCarol Herr, Terri and Vern Kleist and S/C JackFerguson who were there for the meeting at 9 o’clock.Without the many volunteers, SWYC would not be able toconduct these races. We really couldn’t do the raceswithout you!

As always, Neil Butler did the scoring for both races andChuck Darragh consistently cleans the gun and the equip-ment. I personally could not manage these races without thetireless help and cooperation of both of these men.

T he March contest was held on a day with showersand very high currents. The currents were also offrelative to their predicted times. Add to that, the

Abraham Lincoln entered the bay in the middle of thecontest. Aircraft Carriers have the right of way, so wetake a time out, wait and see our current predictions getworse. A typical winning score is less than 1%. Thismonth’s winning score was 1.8232%. Out of tencontestants, the SWYC contestants, Mike Fontaine, EdDenaci, Ralph Salerno, Jim Lonergan and MikeElovitz were sixth through tenth. Still, with our numberof participants, SWYC is still first in club score.

The San Diego Cruising Association now welcomessailboats under power as competitors. Any competingvessel must be capable of maintaining a six-knot averageon the course. Persons interested in competing arewelcome to ride along with a contestant. I

W ow, May 1st already!

Where did a third of the

year go? We have had

some very exciting races and some very informative

presentations at our monthly Sail Fleet general membership

meetings on the 2nd Thursday of the month. Hope you all

enjoyed the San Salvadore presentation in April. We have

another really good one coming up this month on May 12

-- Extreme Waves: Rogues, Freaks and Giants by

Craig B. Smith. Be sure to sign up at the front office.

Here is what our SWYC members have done on the race

course in the last few months.

The 2011 Cabrillo regatta finished up on March 26th with afabulous after-race party and awards presentation put onby regatta chair Marie Baer. A special thank you to Mariefor her hard work on this event. In the Cabrillo 4 race, inClass 1 Staghound, skipper Alec Oberschmidt took 1st. Inclass 3 Eclipse skipper, Tim Batcher took 3rd and in 8thwas First Light, skipper Gary Jorgensen. In class 4 SeaMaiden, skipper Carolyn Sherman took 4th place, and in8th place Distraction, skipper Don Laverty. In the Regattaoverall, Class 1 Staghound Alec Oberschmidt took 1stplace. In class 3 Eclipse Tim and Karen Batcher took 2ndand in Class 4 Sea Maiden, Carolyn and SandraSherman took 1st – Way to GO! I know Carolyn wasvery pleased. It was the first time she took 1st place in the

Cabrillo series. Congratulations to all!!

In our annual Charity Bay race on April 3rd we had 21

boats signed up.

On June 17th Sail Fleet will host a “Start of Summer Happy

Hour.” Hope you all can join in. It is a must to sign up so

we can plan for food and beverages. All SWYC members

Hello SWYC Cruisers!by Nancy Spriggs, 2011 Cruise Chair

O ur March Madness cruise was a great time for all

that attended. We had 10 boats rafted up in

Glorietta Bay. The weekend included a dinghy

basketball competition that Keith and Ruth Brower won

– with lots of waves and keen competition!! Mike and

Judy Elovitz hosted Margaritas off their boat – gotta

“Lovit”!! We had a potluck on Saturday night where we

celebrated a few birthdays and several additional couples

joined us by dinghy taxi.

By the time you receive this Mooring Line, our Closing

Day Dinghy Cocktail Cruise will have just taken place.

Carlos and Magaly Caprioglio are hosting this (stay at

the docks) cruise with a Hawaiian theme. This was well-

attended last year and I am certain this year will be just

as fun.

Looking forward to Memorial Day weekend, save a spot

on your calendars for the Sweetheart Cruise at the

Coronado Cays. This is always a popular cruise with lots of

activities planned. As always, you can participate in these

activities or choose to relax on your boat! Please sign up

early to make sure you are included in this fun weekend.

Look for posted information on all of our upcoming

activities. We would love to have you join us!! I



H andicap Fleet just keeps getting better. We are welcoming new boats; Spitfire,

with Jeff Woods at the helm, Distraction with Don Laverty skipper and Sea

Avenue piloted by Don Smith. The ketch Spitfire is sure a beautiful sight

coming down the bay with all of her colorful sails set.

We take pride in the Handicap Fleet members who took part in the Benefit on the

Bay Race. Special thanks to Forget About It, Pilot, El Gato, Genevieve and Consigliare

in the SWHF Class and Rio del Mar, Distraction, Blue Agave and Sunrise in the PHRF

class. Their entries helped our Club raise a record amount of money for the extremely

deserving San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine. We salute Joe

Restivo and Will Sparks for organizing this race for us.
