Message from the Principal Annual Alumni Baseball Game

On Saturday, February 6, more than 35 alum-ni were back on campus to play in the An-nual Alumni Baseball Game. The Alumni Game brought back alumni from all decades to enjoy a day of baseball and friendship. (60s, 70s, 80s, 90, and 2000s) Alumni arrived at 10am for batting practice and participated in a Home Run Derby. Nick Oddo ‘10 won the competition for the alumni. Following the home run derby, the team of alumni took on the 2016 Varsity Baseball team in a 9-inning exhibition game.

Dear Fellow Alumni,

As we get closer to the Class of 2016 Commencement, the celebration of the commitment, dedication and the achieve-ments of the graduating seniors continues as they soon become St. Paul Alumni. We have more than 13,000 proud alumni who are making their mark in the world of business, law, education, military, police and fire departments and the medical field.

Soon enough, the 176 graduating seniors will be leaving their mark in the world in these career fields. With students from the Class of 2016 getting accepted into colleges such as Air Force Academy, UCLA, USC, UC Santa Bar-bara, Pepperdine, Michigan State University, Syracuse University, Ole Miss and University of Alabama, this stands proof that St. Paul students are being pre-pared with rigorous academic programs to help keep them competitive to be able to go to the college of their dreams.

St. Paul has prepared students for college and the work force for 60 years. We are proud and fortunate to have such supportive and loyal alumni, and that continues with this year’s graduating class.

We invite our alumni to the celebrate the 57th Commencement on Sunday, June 5th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles at 3pm. We trust you will be proud of these intellectual and talented students as they move forward and make their mark in the world and proudly say they are a St. Paul Alum.

With gratitude,

Kate Aceves ‘87Principal

“Although my wife Carol and I have been loyal supporters of St. Paul for many years, I had not participated in the Alumni Baseball Game since the late 70s. Armando Rivas (Class of 95) whom I have known for several years, en-couraged me to play this year, telling me what a good time it is. Although many of my alumni teammates have known each other for many years, they welcomed this old-timer with open arms. The camaraderie was great and I felt right at home. After all, we are all Swordsmen.”

- Jim Emmerling ‘73

The game resulted in a 13-8 win for the Varsity team as the alumni gave it their best shot and was able to keep up throughout the 9 inning game. Following the game, all participatants stayed for a potluck and alumni were able to connect with the Varsity team and share the memories they had on campus.

“The Alumni Game is a great opportunity to meet fellow alumni and current Swordsmen. It’s a great time to see old teammates and reunite and reminisce about our Swordsmen days.” -Anthony Aguilera ‘05

Thank you to all that came out and helped make this possible. See you all next year!

SPHS Phonathon Makes Big Impact

Thank you to all the alumni that donated to this year’s St. Paul High School Phonathon. Through a course of 3 days, St. Paul seniors, alumni and development department called alumni from every decade to connect and confirm information we have in our alumni database.

With nearly 100 donors, we raised more than $11,500.00 to go towards school endeavors such as facility upgrades, arts, academics and athletics.

Thank you to all of our alumni!

A Letter to Alumni:

Fellow Alumni,

I am going to humble myself and make a confession to all our Swordsmen alums and families. Of those included are my children, my brother and sisters and the many, many friends that I have from attending our great school. For many years, 38 to be exact, I have been receiving our alumni news-letter and reading the many accomplishments our current and past students have achieved, the up-coming events, and the many articles that keep us in the know of how and what is going on at St. Paul. On occasion, I read about all those alums and families who generously and graciously give back by donating to the many funds that are available at our school or through service by volunteering on committees to help the students of today and tomorrow.

My confession to you; I have not done enough. I have donated on occasion to the general fund or I get the phone call from our current students to help with a pledge. When my schedule permits I at-tend the golf tournament in order to help the football program. I have been on a few committees in the past and had the honor of coaching football at all levels under the leadership of Coach A. Some-thing happened over the past several years where I lost touch with the school that I am so grateful for; the very school that when asked where I went to high school; I say it with pride “St. Paul.” I can’t put my finger on it but it seems that life took over and all was forgotten.

I have been so Blessed words cannot describe. I have a beautiful family with the new addition of an 8 month old granddaughter. I have a great job, where I have been fairly successful. I had the opportunity to be in the education field as a teacher an administrator both at the elementary and high school levels. I have had the opportunity to continue my calling as a high school football coach for the past 25 years. With all these blessings I need to give back to those who helped me achieve my goals and who continue to have an influence in my life. As a graduate of three private schools (K-8, high school and college) I know as well as you how important donations, fundraising and alumni help can be to the growth and success of our students.

Many students have walked the halls of the 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 buildings and have played on the fields or in the gyms with the same goal in mind: To be the best Swordsman they can be. Next year will be the 60th anniversary of the school and it has been a life chang-ing place to call home for almost 13,000 young men and women. One of the many things that St. Paul High School continues to do is to be committed to the development of these young men and women through a challenging educational experience of academic, co-curricular and spiritual growth.

I am asking all of you for your help. The school, under the leadership of our Principal Kate Aceves ’87 and the Alumni Director, Andrew Gon-zales ’05, is creating an Alumni Association. The school will greatly depend on the support and cooperation of the Alumni Association with as-sisting in building and strengthening the connection between alumni and other ongoing relationships through fundraising, events, community outreach and student recruitment. Please join me in supporting our school and making a difference for all the students present and future. May you have questions regarding the Alumni Association please contact Andrew at [email protected] or at (562) 698-6246 ext. 729.

I look forward to renewing friendships and creating new ones in the near future.

May God Bless you and your families,

Paul Rifino ‘78

St. Paul Girls Basketball Wins 4AA CIF ChampionshipSt. Paul defeated Duarte High School 45-44 in the 4AA CIF Championship Fri-day, March 4 at the Felix Event Center at Azusa Pacific University. This is St. Paul Girls Basketball 1st CIF title in school history. Having been in one of the toughest girls’ basketball leagues in all of California, the Lady Swordsmen went 20-13 for the season and finished in the Semi-Final Round in the State Championshiop Playoffs.

The playoff run started off with big wins against La Reina High School, La-guna Beach High School and St. Monica. In the semi-finals, St. Paul faced off against Rosary Academy, having been down 40-33 entering the 4th quarter before the Lady Swordsmen put together a huge rally and finally able pull away with a 48-46 final.

In the back and forth CIF title game against Duarte High School, junior Fran-cesca Facchini, made the game winning 3-point shot from the corner with 6.6 seconds left in the game to give St. Paul a 45-44 lead. Facchini, who was 0 for 5 before giving the Swordsmen a 42-40 lead with a drive to the basket with 2:22 left, very confident when she got the ball with her team down, 44-42, letting it go and hit-ting nothing but net in the final seconds.

“It’s all about the team, not just individuals. I am very proud of our team and the people who are supporting us.” Said junior Francesca Fuchinni, “We are working very hard to achieve our goals. The CIF Title is just the beginning.”

Alumni of the Year!

Each year St. Paul High School honors one male and one female from among the more than 13,000 alumni who show their loyal support by volunteering for school functions, attending events and giving financially. This year we honor Patricia Fohl Shaughnessy ’61 and Bill Tegeler ’74 for all they have done to support St. Paul.

Patricia Fohl Shaughnessy

“My first encounter with St. Paul was when I was 15 years old, and my family moved from Ohio to California. The year was 1959. So St Paul HS has been a big part of my life for a long time. I met my husband and best friend, Marty, the next year.

When Libby told me I was to be Alumnae of the Year, my first reaction was Why me? I am sure that there are hundreds of other women who would be a better fit than I. Then I thought, perhaps it is because I have known St. Paul HS in many ways.

Of course, I was a student here and a song leader in my senior year. How-ever, I also experienced the school as the wife of a teacher and coach. After losing a dear friend who was a coach here, we supported his foundation. My husband and I served on a fund raising committee and of course, we attended many class reunions. My class of 1961 is having one this October. There are still many Swordsmen who are and have been life long friends.

Over the years, I have done many things, raised a family, worked many jobs, managed a ranch for 26 years, showed horses, done some travel-ing. I have gone back to school many times because I deeply believe in the value of education. But somehow, through it all, St Paul remained an important part of my life also. I thank you for the honor!! “

Bill Tegeler

Bill Tegeler comes from a long standing St. Paul family that in-cludes his two older sisters Corey and Sharon, and younger brother Michael. Some of his activities included track, basketball and football, where he was a member of the 1972 undefeated championship season.

In his junior year, he went on the Class Orphanage Charity trip to Tecate, Mexico to build and paint houses. Upon graduation, Bill earned his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Univ., Fullerton and Master’s Degree from the Univer-sity of San Francisco.

In 1977, Bill was a police officer for the City of Whittier. Later, he transferred to the Santa Ana Police Department where he rose to the rank of Commander and was the recipient of a number of local, state and national police awards. Upon his retirement in 2006, the substation Bill commanded for over ten years was named in his honor.

After retiring, he moved to Wash-ington, D.C. to accept a Deputy Director position with the Police Executive Research Forum, providing consulting services to law enforcement agencies across America and abroad. In 2010, Bill returned to California to accept his most challenging and reward-ing position yet, caregiver to his newly born twin grandchildren, Giovanni and Scarlett. Bill is grateful for the opportunity to attend St. Paul and attributes much of the success he has been fortunate enough to achieve to the values, ethics, ideals and life lessons learned while attending St. Paul High School.

Ed Carberry ‘73 plays catch with NFL Standout

Head Football Coach of Southwestern College in Chula Vista, CA, Ed Carberry ’73 went to work one morning to see Arizona Cardinals Wide Receiver, Larry Fitzgerald on the football field filming a commercial for EAS Sport Supplements and got the opportunity to play catch with one of NFL’s greatest.

“There were about 15 people there working the commercial and nobody could throw a football, so I finally said I could do it and we threw for about 40 minutes. Larry told me to throw it anywhere near him and he would get it and it’s a good thing because that’s exactly what I ended up doing. I probably threw about five spirals the entire time.”
