Over the past few weeks,Marines aboard the Peleliuhave been very busy. Betweenlaunching and recoveringaircraft to keep aircrewcurrency to in depth aircraftmaintenance, Marinessomehow still found time to letloose and support morale andwelfare.

On top of exercising theiringenuity in finding new waysto spend their free time,Marines got a chance toparticipate in the Peleliu Idol asthe competition nears the finalround. To add to theexcitement, this week’scompetition was afforded theopportunity to open for theband Anberlin who visited theMarines and Sailors this week.

Anberlin, being flown in on aCH-53E, spent two days aboardthe USS Peleliu. Their

gratitude for the Marines andSailors showed as they ate withMarines in the mess decks andsigned autographs. Their visithit a pinnacle, when they gavea bona fide rock concert in thehangar bay. Marines andsailors got to enjoy the a theexperience of an intimatesetting, as Anberlin rocked outon a stage built on the flatbedof a Marine 7-ton truck coupledwith a picturesque Americanflag backdrop. Few concertvenues will be able to top theexperience for both the Marinesand sailors or Anberlin.

As January came to a close,February came in by stormbringing new promotions, awards and a new era amongstthe Purple Foxes ExecutiveOfficer. Finally, this week’saddition came to a close withMarines and sailors taking anoperational pause to critically

evaluate the processes andprocedures ensuring thatMarines and sailors continue tokeep each other safe whileexecuting the difficult tasksthey face on a daily basis.

DOSS – Department of Safety and StandardizationOn Groundhog’s Day, the squadron took the day off from our grueling daily flight operations to talk about everyone’s favorite topic: safety!

(right) Maj Pierce takes the stage to talk to the Marines about the importance of safety.(left) Marines are engrossed in the discussions that followed.

Each Marine was given the opportunity to talk about what has been going well so far in the deployment, and what we can continue to improve upon. In case you were wondering, Djibouti Phil (the local version of a groundhog, which is a camel) said that there was going to be no winter this year…again.
