A Swiss team most people knew lit-tle about has a chance to make a big name for itself at the 2014 Ford

World Women’s Curling Championship, pre-sented by Booster Juice.

Binia Feltscher played a patient controlled game to defeat Korea 7-3 in Saturday after-noon’s semifinal. Her team of third Irene Schori, second Franziska Kaufmann and lead Christine Urech plays Canada for the gold medal today.

“We are so excited to be here,” said Schori, who was bubbling like a freshly opened bottle of champagne. “Nobody in Switzerland was thinking about this before the championship.

“Now we are here and playing well. We will be happy to play the final.”

The Korean team of skip Ji-sun Kim, lead Seul-bee Lee, second Mi-Sung Shin and third Un-Chi Gim plays Russia for the bronze medal.

“I’m not disappointed,” said Kim, who is making her third appearance at the world championship. “Our team played great.

“Switzerland is more great than us. That’s life.”

Canadian skip Rachel Homan said it didn’t matter who her team faced in the final.

“To be honest we’re not really concerned who about who we’re playing,” said Homan, whose rink finished third at last year’s world championships. “We’re just going to be play-ing our game.

“We’re feeling good. We made some big shots last night. We have some confidence we can take into the final.”

Canada beat Switzerland 8-3 in Friday night’s one-two playoff game.

The last Canadian rink to win the world women’s title was Jennifer Jones in 2008.

The teams were tied 2-2 after four ends and looked like boxers trading early-round jabs.

Switzerland finally landed a blow in the fifth. A Swiss rock was buried at the back of the house. When Gim, who throws final stones, tried to remove it she wrecked on a guard. That allowed Feltscher to draw for a pair and a 4-2 lead.

Korea cut that lead in half with a hit and stay for one in the sixth.

Feltscher delivered the knockout punch in the ninth when Feltscher made a raise take-out to score three points.

“Korea was attacking,” said Feltscher. “The main thing was not to give up one at that point. The three was obviously a bonus.”

Schori said her team can’t give up any big ends against Canada.

“We have to really keep the game close,” said Schori. “If they are ahead they are unde-featable.

“We will just try to play a clean game like we did the whole week.”

The Swiss handed Homan her only defeat of the round-robin, beating Canada 8-2 last Sunday night.

Al Moore, the Canadian who coaches the Swiss team, said they head into the final believing in themselves.

“They believe if they go out and play their best, they can win,” said Moore, the husband of TSN commentator Linda Moore. “Really that’s the difference.”

For the Koreans it was their third game in 22 hours.

Canada finished the round robin 10-1 fol-lowed by Switzerland at 9-2. Russia, Sweden and Korea all had 8-3 records.

Korea defeated Sweden 7-5 in a tiebreaker Friday afternoon before beating Russia 9-5 in Saturday morning’s 3-4 playoff game.

Switzerland and Korean have some history at the world championship.

Kim lost the semifinal of the 2012 champion in Lethbridge, Alta., to

Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott. Kim then lost the bronze medal game to Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin.

“We have experience from that,” said Kim.Kim has a chance to win Korea’s first women’s

world championship medal. Korea’s Kim Kyeo-ng-ae earned the silver medal at this year’s jun-ior women’s championship after losing the final to Canada’s Kelsey Rocque.

Feltscher is considered among the top four teams in Switzerland. She won a bonspiel in Red Deer, Alta., this season and is 12th on the money

list for the World Curling Tour. The 35-year-old mother of two was the third

on Ott’s team that won the silver medal at the 2002 Olympics in Turin. She also played with Ott at several world and European championships.

Feltscher skipped her own rink at the 2010 worlds in Swift Current, Sask., finishing 3-8.

She believes her team won’t have the same nerves today as they did when they played Can-ada Friday night before a packed house at Har-bour Station.

“That was a new experience for the players,” Feltscher said. “Having that behind us, I think that’s going to be a big factor.”

Some notes and observations from the 2014 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice.

Baby On Board

The next generation of Danish curlers made an appearance at the world championships.

Denmark third Denise Dupont is expecting her second child, a boy, in June. She admitted being six months pregnant adds to the chal-lenge of sweeping.

“It’s more difficult now,” said Dupont. “Your sliding leg is hitting your stomach a bit. I’m glad (the championship) is now and not in April or May.”

Dupont said the pregnancy was planned for this year because the team did not qualify for the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Skip Madeleine Dupont has seen this act before.

“At the 2008 worlds she was like way more pregnant than now, believe it or not,” said Madeleine, adding her big sister needs to improve her timing.

“She’s always trying to get babies in the summer, so she is ready for August. She is working on it.”

•••

My Name Is Earle The Team Canada member earning the

loudest cheers this week didn’t throw a take-out or sweep a rock into the house.

Coach Earle Morris received rock star treat-ment. There were chants of “Earle, Earle” at Harbour Station.

One afternoon, moments after Morris left for a bathroom break, the team called a time-out. Even without Morris the players arrived on a strategy.

“Best timeout I ever had,” Morris said upon his return.

There has been a suggestion this could be Morris’s final year coaching Rachel Homan’s team.

“That’s not something to talk about at this time,” said Morris. “Once the event is over

with, once the season is over with, that’s when those kind of decisions will be made.”

Hey Sailor It wasn’t smooth sailing for Latvia at this year’s world cham-

pionship but lead Zaklina Litauniece has encountered rough water before.

Litauniece was a competitive sailor and represented Lat-via at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She now coaches sailing, which allows her to curl in the winter.

Her boyfriend is a seven-time Latvian curling champion and encouraged her to take up the sport three years ago.

“When I was an active sailor I didn’t know curling existed,” said the 45-year-old mother of two.

Litauniece, who competed in the single dinghy class, appre-ciates curling’s team work.

“As a sailor I was singlehanded so I was on my own,” she said. ‘Here’s it’s so different.”

•••

More Than A Pretty Face

The Russian women’s curling team arrived at the world championship like a boxer bloodied and bruised in a fight.

Anna Sidorova’s team stumbled to a 3-6 record in the Olym-pic tournament and finished ninth out of 10 teams.

“We finished not as we expected,” said Sidorova. “The more difficult thing for me personally was we all expected to fight for medals.

“As soon as the round-robin games were finished, we fin-ished also. That was for me the hardest thing. It’s not fun to see different people play for medals.”

Sidorova did turn some heads at the Olympics photos of her posed in something less than a curling outfit.

“It’s much more pleasure if people appreciate me as a pro-fessional curler,” she said. “Of course, we are all girls and it’s nice to hear that people think you are a pretty girl.”

•••

Catching A Jet Plane

With Ottawa just over 1,100 kilometres from Saint John, Team Canada was expecting an easy trip to this year’s world championship.

Didn’t happen.A storm forced the cancellation of the team’s flight. They

were forced to fly to Halifax, hire a van and driver, then drive five hours to Saint John.

“It was a complete whiteout through New Brunswick,” said third Emma Miskew. “We were just happy to arrive safely.”

That still was better than last year when a snowstorm left the team stranded in the Frankfurt airport 30 hours while travel-ling to Latvia for the world championship.

•••

Bedside Manner

U.S. skip Allison Pottinger didn’t play in the championship’s opening draw but still managed some reconnaissance on ice conditions without leaving her hotel.

“That’s one of the best things about being in Canada,” said the Brampton, Ont., native who now has curled out of St. Paul, Min. “I was in my pajama bottoms, watching on TSN.

“You can see the broom and the weights and you can hear them talking and what they were saying about the ice.”

Pottinger and U.S. chort Ann Swisshelm, here doing colour on World Curling TV , announced their retirements here this week.

•••

Not Like Father

Ice runs in the family of German lead Stella Heiss. Her father was Joseph ‘Peppi’ Heiss, a goaltender who

played 1,200 games in the German hockey league and another 140 matches for the national team. He retired in 2001 due to a knee injury.

“I was his greatest fan,” said Heiss. She loved watching her father play but didn’t follow in his

goal skates.“You can see I am not the kind of girl that can play hockey,”

said the slender Heiss. “I love the game, I watch the NHL.“I just wanted to do something on the ice like my dad, that’s

why I am here.”Her father played in the Olympics in Albertville, Lilleham-

mer and Nagano. For the record, he wasn’t in net when Can-ada won the first shootout in Olympic history in a 4-3 quar-ter-final victory against Germany at the 1992 Games.

Sapporo ready to welcome WWCC next yearEYE OPENER STAFF

Konnichiwa.Organizers for next year’s World

Women’s Curling Championship in Sapporo, Japan, have spent the last few days touring Harbour Station and col-lecting information for when they host the event.

Kazushige Niki, who is head of the delegation, was impressed with how the event was staged in Saint John.

“We have learned the system and how it runs,” said Niki, director general of sports affairs for the Tourism and Culture Affairs Bureau. “It’s very won-derful and great.

“We want to run the same system next year.”

The 2015 championship will be held March 14-22 at the Tsukisamu Gymna-sium.

Canadian curlers have found success in Japan. Kelly Scott won the 2007 world championships held in Aomori, Japan. Sandra Schmirler won the gold medal at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

Niki said there are about 1,000 curl-

ers in Sapporo but he expects that number to grow following Japan’s per-formance at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The women’s team skipped by Ayumi Ogasawara finished fifth with a 4-5 record.

As host Japan automatically qualifies a team for the championships.

Sapporo is a city of 1.9 million located on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Niki said guests travelling to the championships can experience local attractions like the annual Snow Festi-val, one of Japan’s largest winter events. A highlight of the festival are the snow and ice sculptures.

“Sapporo has lots of snow so we have winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and skating,” he said.

The 2,321-seat Tsukisamu Gymna-sium was opened in 1972. The arena is used for hockey, figure skating and public skating. It also serves as the home for the Sapporo Selection Team, which plays in the second tier J North Hockey League.

Niki said the arena is a five-minute walk to the subway, then an eight-min-ute ride to downtown.

When the final rock stops rolling Sunday night, either Canada or Switzerland will add another title

to the national curling banner.Canada has not won since Jennifer Jones

did the deed in Vernon in 2008, beating Bingyu Wang of China; the last time it was held on our sod; the Swiss won gold in Lethbridge thanks to Mirjam Ott.

So, as the saying goes, something’s gotta give. From CCA publications, we wish all the

teams playing in medal games Sunday the very best of luck and to those who have co-operated with us and shared your smiles - much thanks.

•••Speaking of the aforementioned JJ, she and

her rink are still basking in the glory of Olym-pic gold.

“It’s been absolutely incredible and the sup-port has been overwhelming,” said Jones Satur-day.

“We feel like we are still living the dream. Impossible to put into words actually.”

She says it wasn’t pressure her charges felt in Russia, rather support.

“It’s always an honour and privilege to wear the Maple Leaf and honestly, we didn’t feel the pressure, only support from all of Canada.“

Jones, who had several life-changing dynam-

ics including a serious knee injury, a new part-nership, and a baby girl, says life’s perspective is always changing, even if curling focus does not.

“My approach to the game is the same as it always has been. I play because I love everything about curling,” says Jones.

“I have an amazing family and I’m in a great place in my life, which makes everything seem so much easier. I also love playing with the girls and we bring out the best in each other. When I hurt my knee I was determined to come back stronger than ever and not let the girls down,” she said.

And adding a daughter just helped accentu-ate that focus.

“Having Isabella in my life has made me want to enjoy every moment that much more and to ensure that if I am going to spend a sec-ond away from her, it’s for a great reason.

Jones passed along her best wishes to all the curlers here, and a special tip of the cap to Rachel Homan.

“Team Canada looks to be playing well and is one win from the World Championship. They are a great team and just need to keep doing what they are doing and I am confident they will win.”

That would put the penultimate cap on argu-ably one of the most successful Canadian curl-ing years ever: Olympic golds - two of them; A Paralympic gold; a women’s world junior title - with this tourney, and Kevin Koe’s Beijing effort still to play out.

Canadian rocks are in a good place. •••

Thanks to the CCA, Al Cameron, Warren Hansen and Robin Wilson for allowing me to share an important message with you.

Two years ago, a 15-year-old beautiful girl, daughter of a good friend of mine in Grande Prairie, Alberta, where I hang my hat, decided to take her own life.

After a tragic car crash that claimed four football players in a high profile drink-and-drive accident that received national media attention, it was a period in which upwards on

a dozen Peace Country teens chose suicide.Where are the answers when there are no

answers?One year after Hannah Ouellette’s death, I

approached her parents Andre and Tammy and asked if they would walk the road of pub-licity with me, and they agreed with much strength.

Andre, who co-owns a jewelry store in GP said he talked it over with the family, and they agreed that if their efforts could save just one life it was worth the effort.

That’s strength. As a father of a daughter and son the same

age, I’m not sure I would have been able to see the light of day again.

This hope is refreshing and I asked myself what could I do to help.

And then I thought of curling.I touched base with some close friends in

the curling community - Renee Sonnenberg – who has won Alberta titles, went to the Roar after qualifying through Kitchener and again to The Scotties as Val Sweeting’s alternate (not to mention coaching this Dupont Danish crew for a couple of years, including at Vancou-ver); as well as the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta, based in Grande Prai-rie, and of which I am on the board of direc-tors.

The Prairie Showdown Players Tour event is one of the last on the cashpiel circuit and it is played next weekend.

We wondered about the possibility of play-ing a celebrity Skins Game on Wednesday, with a silent auction and sponsorship with all proceeds going to Hannah Ouellette’s Com-munity Foundation Fund which endows to Teen Suicide Prevention in the community and area.

I started calling curlers to ask if they were coming, would they play... YES, YES, YES, said Heather Nedohin and Geoff Walker and Sherry Middaugh and Chelsea Carey and Marc Kennedy.

I didn’t have to ask twice, in fact, I didn’t even have to ask once.

And that’s why curlers are the best people. Those who know me, know I talk just a little

too much at times – hey I get it.So the perfect moment was when I was on

the phone with Carter Rycroft of the Brier win-ning Koe clutch – a Grande Prairie guy.

So I am explaining the way it would work and Carter says to me, “Fred, you had me at charity game...”

It was one of those moments. Then I got onto collecting items for the

silent auction.

My longtime pal Tom Braid at the Edmon-ton Sun gave me never-before offered Gretzky photos from his collection - autographed.

MAKE THE FINAL - TSN’s Vic Rauter was a big help, putting me in touch with people to help including soccer celebs Craig Forrest and Danny Dicchio who autographed authentic jersey for me... and the list goes on.

Alison Kreviazuk and Rachelle Pidherny donated shirts as well.

So Wednesday, if you happen to be in Grande Prairie – haha, know that we will have a wonderful event at the Grande Prairie Curl-ing Club – a 4 -end Skins Game; Team Europe (Nik Edin and Eve Muirhead) vs. Team Can-ada (Sherry Middaugh and Team Stoughton skipped by Jon Mead) and all of the proceeds from the event, silent auction and all, will go to Hannah’s fund.

In this day and age of social media and its ability to be misused in cyber-bullying and such, who knows how to help a teenager in cri-sis when your generation did not experience that virtual dynamic. Hopefully, this will help.

And God bless all who are helping with this event; my committee Renee, Tom, Tracey, Leah and Lena, and let’s hope the sunshine of Alberta smiles on us through Hannah Wednes-day.

•••Thanks to everyone in all the media rooms

along the way that have helped us get the job done, we appreciate it.

Russia opened the door and Korea stepped into the semifinal of the 2014 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice.

A couple of missed shots by Russian skip Anna Sidorova resulted in steals in the fifth and eighth ends and helped propel Korea to a 9-5 win in the three-four Page playoff game Saturday morning.

The Korean team of skip Ji-sun Kim, lead Seul-bee Lee, second Mi-Sung Shin and third Un-Chi Gim advanced to the evening semifi-nal game against Switzerland.

Switzerland lost 8-3 to Canada in Friday night’s one-two playoff game.

“Today we just tried to enjoy the game,” said Kim. “The Russian team is very good, but the Korean team members concentrated during the game. That’s why we got the win in this

game.”The Russian rink of Sidorova, third Marga-

rita Fomina, second Alexandra Saitova and lead Ekaterina Galkina play in this afternoon’s bronze medal against the semifinal loser.

Sidorova said her team had trouble adapt-ing to the ice.

“The ice today was really fast,” said the

23-year-old student from Moscow. “We would play a guard shot and it would be in the house.

“It’s random choice which way you should draw to the button. We tried to predict and it didn’t work all the time. That was the main mistake for us today.”

With the game tied 3-3 in the fifth Sidorova needed a draw to the four-foot ring to score. She had an open house but her stone was heavy and slid out of the back, allowing Korea to steal a deuce.

“That was probably the key moment for us,” said Sidorova. “We were a bit tight. I missed my last one.”

The steal put the Koreans in the driver’s seat.“Even though the Russian team is very great, we

had some luck in that moment,” said Kim.Sidorova found her weight for a draw in the sixth

that got one point back. The Russian train went off the track again in the

eighth. First Fomina missed on a long, raise takeout. That allowed Gim, who throw last rocks for Korea, to slide a shot around a front guard and have two stones counting.

Sidorova attempted a draw with her last shot. The rock navigated a port and crept into the four-foot rink but stopped inches too short. That gave Korea another steal and a 7-4 lead.

Russian drew to within two in the ninth when Sidorova made a pretty raise takeout to remove two Korean stone and score a point.

Russia, Sweden and Korea all finished the round robin with 8-3 records. Under a tiebreak-ing formula Russia was awarded third place. Korea defeated Sweden 7-5 in a tiebreaking game Friday afternoon.

The Russian team came to the world championship after a frustrating Olympic tournament where they were 3-6 and finished ninth out of 10 teams. A bronze medal in Saint John would help ease some of the Olympic disappointment.

“We’ve got huge motivation,” said Sidorova. “To get to the top four is for nothing if you don’t have any medals.

“It is much more important to get the medal and not be fourth. I hope we will do our best and try to get this medal. We are ready to do this.”

Kim’s team also played at the Olympics, finishing 3-6. Korea beat Russia 6-5 during the round robin.

The only other time the Koreans advanced to the world championship semifinal was in 2012 in Lethbridge, Alta., where Kim lost 9-6 to Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott. Ott would go on to beat Sweden in the final.

Kim lost the bronze medal game to Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin.“The important way to win against Switzerland is just to enjoy the game,” said Kim. “If we

enjoy that game we can be the winner.”
