Is it possible that the warmer

weather is finally on its

way?? Is Spring really just

around the corner?

Children will be trading in

their snow pants for splash

pants...winter boots for rub-

ber boots...scarves for sun-

glasses.

It is a time of year where op-

portunities for exploration

and discovery are all around

us ~ flowers begin to bloom,

leaves begin to bud, worms

magically appear on side-

walks … the environment tru-

ly can be our teacher as we

help children to explore and

discover the world around them.

We invite you to please take

some time to enjoy the photo

documentation at your child’s

center. Not only does it provide a

glimpse of your child’s day, it

allows you to see the learning

that is taking place and witness

relationships being built.

A sincere thank you goes out to

KDC Board of Directors, the Gen-

eral Manager and the Supervi-

sors for the support and guidance

that has been given to our educa-

tors as the documentation pro-

cess has evolved. Congratula-

tions to all of the KDC staff who

have embraced the technology

and added their creative flair to each

learning story.

Sincerely,

Alison

ties that we engaged in

was creating colorful ice

shapes; this allowed us to

explore mixing and creat-

ing colors. We also en-

joyed filling our new sen-

sory bin with snow ~

building and digging in

the snow while staying

warm and toasty indoors!

On our coldest days we

were fortunate to be able

to get to the school gym

or go for nice walks

As Spring approaches

our toddlers are excit-

ed for the warm

weather and all of the

exciting outdoor activ-

ities that come with

Spring.

The cold tempera-

tures of winter limited

our outdoor times so

we brought all of the

fun indoors! One of

the fun winter activi-

around the school.

With Spring

around the corner,

we look forward to

getting outside

and enjoying all of

the messy fun that

Spring has to offer!

Jessy and Alyssa

Greetings from the Executive Director

St. Martha Child Care

In anticipation of

heading outside to

play, we look forward

to - sand coloring,

hand and foot printing

on white fabric, play-

ing with balls and out-

side toys and equip-

ment!

It has been a pleasure

and joy to watch the

children interacting

together. We look for-

ward to continuing our

fun activities both in-

side and outside and

introducing the chil-

dren to some of our

local wildlife through

art by hand-printing

and foot printing

Springtime species

such as ducks and

birds. Shilpi

Collins Bay Child Care Centre As the long winter

comes to an end, our

infants are busting to

get outdoors! Activi-

ties that they partici-

pated in while in-

doors included color

mixing, blanket

rides, sensory play -

using jello, colored

cheerios, gooey mix-

tures...wow, the list

went on and on!

A long, cold winter is no

obstacle to fun at Trillium

CCC! The infants, toddlers

and preschoolers have all

been delving into art, ex-

ploring sensory activities

and engaging in a ton of

active play in our multi-

purpose room.

The infants have been try-

ing their hands - and feet!-

at painting, exploring the

feeling of paint and seeing

how 2 colors mix together.

The toddlers are intrigued

by anything they can get

their creative little hands on

and the gallery of artwork

just keeps expanding. Over

in the preschool room easel

painting and watercolor

artwork are persistent

favorites, with vibrant

colors brightening the

room whatever the weath-

er outside.

The world is one big sen-

sory experience for the

infants and they are ea-

ger to thoroughly and

thoughtfully explore; and

now that they are all up-

right they are discovering

interesting things in their

sensory table.

The toddlers seem to

have a magical sensory

table, full of water one

day, soil the next...and

now it’s full of beans! Just

like the children busy

investigating its ever-

changing contents.

Meanwhile, the pre-

schoolers are still

fascinated by rice,

listening to the

sounds it makes, feel-

ing it filter through

their fingers, predict-

ing what it will flow

through, hiding treas-

ures in its depths -

there really seems to

be no limit to the pos-

sibilities offered by a

simple bin of rice.

Whatever the weath-

er, the children are

active, engaged...and

having fun! Emma

The Environment is a Teacher

“Beauty is the voice that calls the child to engage in materials and elevates them to a high level of grace and courtesy as they interact in their environment.” (Haskins 2012)

As early childhood educators, we design our play-based pro-grams so that they have a sensibility and rationale for decisions we make about the environment we offer, and in doing so we must include not only thoughts about the physical space, but the relationships among the children, staff, materials, program rules and program schedules.

Children are competent, curious and capable of complex thinking and a thoughtfully organized, aesthetically rich program with open-ended materials invite children to make relationships and communicate their ideas in many ways. Photo documentation strategically located prompts expansion on ideas and reflection.

The physical arrangement of programs invite engagement, ex-ploration and learning. Early Childhood Educators who observe, document and reflect on children’s engagement with the environ-ment become partners in learning with the children. (some ex-cerpts borrowed from “The Environment is a Teacher” by Karyn Callaghan, Charles Sturt University)
