• Basic and intermediary stroke mechanics, with specific attention to freestyle including work on body position, rotation and breath control drills.

• Racing starts and flip turns

• Daily workouts, working different energy systems, with varying degrees of difficulty but largely catered to a beginning swimmer level.

Course policiesFor the purpose of attendance, class begins promptly. 5 minutes of tardiness or more will result in only 80 percent of the points for the day being awarded. Leaving early will follow the same protocol.

You may miss one class without penalty for any reason whatsoever. Any other absences for any reason at all will count against your grade, these include illnesses with doctors notes, prior commitments and injuries.

Course Dress code

There are many types of swim suit. Some are more suited to lounging than exercising in. Bikini’s, one pieces, trunks, jammers, are all good options but whatever you’re wearing should be secure and not result in a wardrobe malfunction. It’s worth noting that in general, the more fabric you’re wearing the harder it is to swim especially if you’re learning.

Goggles are basically essential, and swim caps are recommended for long hair.

Sunscreen is a good idea; welcome to swimming in Arizona.

Liquids are also a good idea; just because you're in a pool, doesn't mean you're not sweating.

If you forget or refuse to bring your swim suit and have to sit out you will only receive 80% points for the class that day. Don't let it happen to you.

Please note

Assessment of Student Learning In-class Participation and Performance: 90% of total points will result from your participation and attendance. Yes, you read that correctly. If you show up with a positive attitude, are enthusiastic and try to swim like a champion you have a 90 before you take the final.

There are approximately 7 points possible each day, depending on the number of classes in the semester. Attending class but not participating fully can result in point deductions. Points may be deducted for failing to participate fully, tardiness, leaving early, not assisting with class logistic duties, disrespectful

conduct, and other undesirable behavior. Students may or may not be informed of such deductions.

Final: 10% of total points. The final will be taken on Canvas and must be completed by the assigned date. Once a quiz is closed it will no longer be available to take for credit.

Grading Scale: (Students can earn a total of 100 points in the course)

The percentages break down as follows:

100% to 97%A+

< 97% to 90%A

< 90% to 87%B+

< 87% to 80%B

< 80% to 77%C+

< 77% to 70%C

< 70% to 67%D+

< 67% to 60%D

< 60% to 0%E

PAC Statement of Risk and Responsibility

Risk is associated with many of life’s activities including the Physical Activity Courses (PAC). Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College (MLFTC) and the Physical Education Program will minimize these risks by providing safe physical activity venues, capable instruction, and appropriate equipment.

It is recommended that you purchase student health/accident insurance policy for yourself. These are available through the University, private carriers, or in many cases, through a family policy. If you choose to be/remain uninsured, relatively minor accidents and/or health problems can lead to great expense.

If you have a condition that might affect your participation in this activity course, please inform your instructor by fully completing the “Personal Health History Form” provided early on in this course syllabus. Should you ever become injured or ill during class, do not leave class without notifying the instructor.

Injuries from participation in this course could occur from irresponsible behavior during class activities. In comparison with other sports and other activities, injuries are relatively uncommon in this particular course. Risk of injury can be minimized with careful attention to class safety procedures, wearing appropriate attire, following instructor directions, and by being aware of one’s surroundings.
