Leonie Byrne, PrincipalKindergarten ExcitementThe most exciting news this week was the arrival of Kindergarten on Monday as they started their formal school education.

The children were very excited and coped well with the start having been supported by their parents and being well prepared through attendance at our transition program in 2019. A super start for our little ones in big school!

Making a SplashOur swimming carnival was very successful and I thank Mrs Antzakles and staff who assisted with its organisation. It was disappointing for all of us that all children could not be involved this year due to the drought but hopefully this will not be the case next year.

Mrs Mihell has booked the pool for the Year 3 intensive Swimming from Monday 9 March to Friday 20 March. Last year we were required to postpone the swimming school due to safety concerns around poor air quality. We sincerely hope this swimming school will go ahead but of course we will be guided by advice from the DoE and Tamworth Regional Council.

Communication – 2 waysSchools are very busy places and I encourage you to keep up to date with school events by accessing the newsletter, the school Facebook page and the website.

Your class teacher may also set up unique class communication apps such as See-Saw or Class Dojo.If this is the case you will receive separate advice sent home with your child.

Please mark in your calendars Wednesday 19 February. This night has been set aside for our Parent Information Night. The evening will start at 6:00pm and conclude at 7:00pm.

There will be further information distributed closer to the date. Noting important dates on your family calendar can really help to reduce worry for you and your children.

Novel CoronavirusCurrent advice from the Australian Government Department of Health for parents and affected staff is:

• People who have been in contact with any confirmed Novel Coronavirus cases must be isolated in their home for 14 days following exposure;

• Returned travellers who have been in Hubei Province of China must be isolated in their home for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, other than for seeking individual medical care.

Students and staff currently excluded from school are those who:• over the last 14 days has visited the province of Hubei in central China. They should not return to school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving China, as the coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks or

• are under medical assessment or • have been diagnosed with the Novel Coronavirus or • have had close contact with a confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus. The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia.

In addition The NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education have recommended that:

• Any student or staff member who was in China, including Hong Kong but excluding the province of Hubei over the past 14 days is recommended not attend school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, as the Novel Coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

School Bus Passes 2020The 2020 School Bus Pass for those students who are deemed eligible by Transport for NSW for free travel will be mailed to the student’s postal address.

Most passes will be received between the 24th January and the 31st January 2020.

If the student does not receive their school bus pass by the 3rd February 2020 then please do not hesitate to contact our office.

A grace period is allowed at the start of the school year to enable sufficient time for students to be issued with their school bus pass. During this time drivers will not require students to show a pass and students may still travel, however we do require passes to be shown once the school bus pass has been received.

To travel free during the grace period school students must be in school uniform or be able to provide evidence (such as a school ID or school books) they are travelling to or from school. Department of Education PolicyProtecting Our Children

Schools must be following Department of Education Policies. It must be appreciated that your child's safety is paramount.

Every volunteer in the classroom, canteen, office and with sporting teams, must sign a Child Protection declaration form and provide 100-point identification (if you do not provide a WWCC number).

Parents/Carers transporting team members other than their own child will also be expected to provide a copy of their license, comprehensive insurance and car registration. All paperwork can be completed and presented at the front office. Please note that you only need to do this once in the year and it will be kept on file in the front office.

Parents/Carers of all early leavers must report to the frontoffice to collect an Early Departure slip before collecting a child. The slip must be shown to the teacher to verify that the child has been signed out.

Parent/Carers must keep the slip with them when they leave the school, incase they are approached in the street by HSLO's who often work with the police to complete a Street Sweep.

REGISTRATION

Listen to your children to find out how they are feeling, and what is going on in their lives.

Sometimes your children may not tell you exactly what is going on with them. By actively listening, you can tell if they are happy or if something is bothering them.

Ask yourself: • Do I talk ‘to’ my kids or ‘with’ them? • When I talk with my kids, do I also really listen to them? • Do I stop what I am doing and give them my undivided attention?

To listen well: • Look at the person who is talking and occasionally nod, say “yes” or do something that signals you have understood. • Pay attention and think carefully about what is being said. • When the other person stops speaking show that you have really listened by asking a good question based on what they have just said.

"You can’t impose on kids in your own timing and expect that they will open up then. You just have to wait for that moment when they want to talk. It might happen when you’re washing up, when you’re driving the car or maybe late at night when they walk into your study.” –Sue Le Souef, solicitor.

Dad Jokes zWhat do you call a fake noodle? An Impasta.

zWhy did the coffee file a police report? It got mugged.

zHow does a penguin build its house? Igloos it together.

zWhy did the scarecrow win an award? Because he was outstanding in his field.

zWhy don’t skeletons ever go trick or treating? Because they have no body to go with.
