Every property is different so you must have a preliminary site check completed by the delivery company you have chosen. Access is an important factor for delivery and in some cases the swim spa may need to be lifted over a fence, house or from the driveway of a neighbouring property.

The most common way to deliver a swim spa is via HIAB crane or truck. If physical barriers prevent this from being a practical option, you may have to explore different methods of delivery, such as a helicopter.

We recommend that you arrange a site check early on in this process so your delivery provider understands their access path and can prepare for the delivery well ahead of time.

Delivery

Galaxy Spas or your sales consultant will be able to help you with delivery options. Visit your local dealer or call us on 0800 GLXSPA (459 772) for further information.

One of the first things a lot of people ask about is the electrical requirements for a swim spa. These requirements are important to understand and get sorted early.

Your sales consultant may be able to give some general advice but you must consult an electrician to advise you on the best way to power the swim spa from your home’s electricity supply.

All electrical work must be completed by a registered electrician to be covered under warranty.

Provide your electrician with the full installation guide, found at www.galaxyspas.co.nz/support/

Most Galaxy Swim Spas require a 45 amp power supply. All swim spas except the Ariel need to be hardwired into your residential power supply by a registered electrician.

Electrical Installation

Swim Spa Model Length Amps

Ariel 4m 15 amps

Calypso 4.4m 45 amps*

Atlas 5.5m 45 amps*

Titan 8m 45 amps*

Hyperion 5.9m Swim Zone 45 amps / Spa Zone 32 amps **

Titan Major 8m Swim Zone 45 amps / Spa Zone 32 amps **

* Thedefaultsettingforthesemodelsis45ampshoweverthecurrentlimitcanbereducedto32ampsifrequired.** These models are dual zone and have two control systems, one for the swim zone and one for the spa zone. Theycanbesettoatotalcurrentlimitof45ampsacrossbothzonesifrequired.

Single Zone Swim SpasIf your house cannot cost-effectively support a 45 amp power source it is possible to reduce the current limit of the single zone swim spas to a 32 amp maximum. Your electrician can achieve this through settings in the controller. Running the spa on 32 amps will mean you can’t run all swim spa functions at once. Your electrician will walk you through your options and will set the controller up for you accordingly.

Dual Zone Swim Spas Hyperion and Titan MajorBoth of these models can be set up in different ways depending on the current wiring of your home:

See the table below for our swim spa amperage requirements:

6

Single Phase Most homes have single phase electricity. You may need to either upgrade your existi ng power supply or have your dual zone swim spa current limit reduced to a maximum of 45 amps total across both zones. Your electrician will be able to advise you of the diff erent opti ons available.

The spa zone has two pumps, the swim zone has four pumps. When reducing the total current limit to 45 amps, you can run any combinati on of four pumps simultaneously across both zones.

Three Phase / Split PhaseIf you have three phase electricity in your home, this amperage can oft en be successfully split over the three phases. Again, talk to your electrician for advice.

Connecti ng the Power Feed to your Swim Spa. There are two ways to do this:

Cabinet Power FeedThe power cable is fed through the cabinet by drilling through the closest panel to your outdoor point and inserti ng a cable gland or grommet to seal the hole against the weather. The cable then runs from the power source through the cabinet to the swim spa controller.

Concealed Power FeedIf you wish to conceal the power cable instead and plan to bring the feed up through the bott om of the swim spa, the initialwiringandconduit/plasticpipingwillneed to be in place before delivery.

When the swim spa arrives, have it lowered by crane/HIAB onto supporti ng blocks and open the cabinet panel. Feed the cable up through the hole into the inside (a 60mm hole is recommended) and then remove the blocks and lower gently onto the foundati on.

The following diagrams show the suggested input locati on for the cable.

Positioning RequirementsA bit of planning will enhance the enjoyment of your swim spa as well as making any future servicing of your swim spa much easier. Orientation is an important factor when thinking about where you want to place your swim spa. The following factors should be taken into consideration:

View Privacy WeatherThis is where you are going to sit, relax and take care of your body and mind. What would you like to look at while you’re focusing on your wellbeing?

Where is the most private location you can place your swim spa? Think neighbours, people coming to the door and sight lines of people walking or driving past.

Where is the sunniest and most sheltered spot you can place your swim spa? Out of the wind and in the sun is ideal, and not too far from the house for those chilly nights.

Heat pump ElectricityYour heat pump must be placed a minimum of 1.2m away from the swim spa so it’s not a climbable object for children. The heat pump also needs to be on a concrete foundation. See the diagram in the Foundations Section of this document.

Proximity to your electrical supply may play a big part in determining the site for your swim spa. If you are choosing to conceal the power feed you will need to have the initial wiring and conduit in place before delivery.

850mm

Cover ShelfIf you are going to install a cover shelf, it will need a back clearance of 850mm. The cover shelf comes as a separate piece to the swim spa and you will need to install the cover shelf at the same time you are installing your swim spa. If you are sinking your spa into a deck, a cover shelf is not needed.

Access for Delivery TeamWhat obstacles does your swim spa need to be lifted over, under or around? This may play a part in helping you decide where to position your swim spa.

500mm

Service AreaPlease ensure you leave at least 500mm around the swim spa as a service area. Cabinet panels may need to be removed and there needs to be enough room for a technician to work right around the whole swim spa. 500mm is the absolute minimum. If you are enclosing your spa with a deck or other material, refer to the Inground Installation section.

PlumbingPlease see the diagrams on the next page to show you where the heat pump unions will be. This may play a large role in determining the positioning of your swim spa. You also need to note where the drain is for future reference and make sure it is accessible. A hose attachment is supplied with your swim spa. See the drainage section in the Foundation Requirements section of this document for more information.

Foundation RequirementsGalaxy Swim Spas weigh up to almost two tonnes when empty and take up to 10,560L of water when full. You will require a builder to install a reinforced concrete pad to rest the swim spa on. It is not advised for a swim spa to be placed on wooden decking as it is unlikely to support the weight when full.

Concrete Slab 150-200mm thick

Swim Spa FoundationA foundation for the swim spa will require at least a 150mm - 200mm steel reinforced, cured concrete pad. We recommend a foundation that includes an extra 100mm clearance on each side of the swim spa, plus an allowance for your steps and heat pump.

Heat Pump FoundationThe heat pump must be at least 1.2m away from the spa so it is not a climbable object.

Spa StepsSpa steps must remain movable, so do not fix these in place.

DrainageFlood preventi on is the responsibility of the owner. It is important to have adequate drainage for your swim spa. A hose att achment comes with it and we recommend having a dedicated piece of hose long enough to reach to your waste water or garden area. If you’re draining the water onto your grass or garden area, remember to let the water temperature drop fi rst. If you don’t have an adequate drain off area you may want to consider building drainage into your concrete foundati on during constructi on.

It is advisable to build drainage, or install a sump pump into any enclosed swim spa, to remove any excess water in the case of fl ooding.

Building Consent and ConsiderationsFreestanding InstallationPlacing the swim spa on a concrete foundation is the most common type of installation. Remember to ensure your foundation includes space for the steps to remain movable and for the heat pump to be at least 1.2m away from the spa.

Building ConsentGalaxy Swim Spa heights range from 1.28m - 1.54m. From a safety perspective, the walls of the swim spa act as its own barrier or pool fence as long as the following requirements are met:

• In the case where it is placed on a concrete pad, fencing is not required.

• The steps and/or ladder or other means of providing access to the pool shall have an enclosing barrier and gate complying with the building code, or be removed when not in use. They must not be attached to or secured to the foundation.

• The heat pump must be positioned at least 1.2m away from the side of the swim spa in order to prevent children using it as a climbable object.

• There shall be no ground features or objects within 1.2m of the swim spa that would assist a child in climbing onto the swim spa.

Enclosed Installation If you don’t want a freestanding installation, you can build a deck around your swim spa. There are a few considerations you will need to take into account:

Building ConsentYou will need to install a fence around your swim spa and deck to prevent unsupervised children climbing into the pool. The fence will require building consent.

ClearanceTo allow for service access you need to ensure there is a minimum of 500mm of access around all sides of the swim spa. Ensure decking supports are positioned at least 500mm away from the side of the swim spa. It is common to install removable decking around the swim spa. Don’t forget to allow an easy way to access the spas cabinet for maintenance and servicing.

Page 17: SWIM SPA PRE-DELIVERY GUIDE · 2020-05-07 · 5 One of the first things a lot of people ask about is the electrical requirements for a swim spa. These requirements are important to

17

Cover LocksThe swim spa cover requires a minimum of 325mm of clearance from the top of the installed cover down each side of the cabinet to the lock clips. This clearance needs to be allowed for when designing your deck or enclosure. Not providing the necessary clearances will mean you won’t be able to install your cover properly or lock it.

Even when your swim spa is fenced, we sti ll advise to keep the cover locks in use. The cover locks have multi ple functi ons, working to help keep the warmth in your swim spa, keeping the spa cover on in windy weather, while also being an important safety feature and keeping unatt ended children out of the water.

For those who want to have the cover fl ush with the fenced deck, removing the cover locks at the sti tching will look bett er than cutti ng them. Keep in mind that the cover may be blown off in windy conditi ons.

Building CodeAmendments to the legislati on around building regulati ons came into eff ect in New Zealand in January 2017. It is important that as a swim spa owner you comply with all relevant building code requirements and keep up to date with changes as they arise. Your local council can usually provide informati on around this, including any local bylaws you need to comply with.

It is advisable to build drainage. If this is not possible, a sump pump should be installed into any enclosed swim spa, in case of fl ooding. Talk to your plumber.
