Boak recently traveled to Tokyo, Japan for the first Masters World Championships, July 12 through the 16, where he won fourth place medals In the 50 and 200-meter breaststroke, fifth place medals In the 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter freestyle relay, an eighth place medal In the 200-meter freestyle and a ninth place medal In the 200-meter medley relay. "It was an incredible ex- perience," says Boak, who has been a resident of The Woodlands since 1978 and Is vice president of CTC Enter· prises, Inc., a custom homebuilding company based in The Woodlands since 1975. " There were more than 3,500 competitors from 20 countries represented at the champion· ships," he said. Although Boak was the only Masters swimmer from The Woodlands, there were 36 swimmers from the Lone Star Master Team, of which Boak Is a member, representing other areas In the state of Texas. They competed in Yoyogi Stadium, site of the 1964 Olympic swimm- ing events In Japan. A dedicated, self-motivated athlete, Boak Is as Involved In the adminstrative side of the Masters Program as he Is In the competitive aspect. He was elected president of the U.S. Masters Swimming Program In September, 1985, with respon- sibility for 16 standing commit· tees and a membership of 22,000 registered athletes. The Program Is as hlghly organized as Boak's personal training regimen. When training for a meet, Boak swims six days a week, up to 4,000 yards per day. He trains at The Woodlands Athletic Center, where he and Olympic diving coach Dick Smith began The Woodlands Masters Program. "At the time, I was about 60 pounds overweight, and Smith encouraged me to make some changes In my lifestyle and get back in shape," Boak says. "I began dieting, playing tennis and some lap swimming a few years later, but by 1978, that level of swimming wasn't enough exer· else," he said. At Smi th's suggestion, he looked into the Masters Program and began training on his own until John Vogel, now head aquatics coach at The Woodlands Athletic Center, and Joel Engel began coaching him along with The Woodlands Swim Team In 1982. From the beginning, Boak was Instrumental in organizing The Masters Swimming Program at The Woodlands, and its member· ship eventually grew from one (Boak himself) to 75 members now involved in the program for either fitness, competition or both. " Most people become in· terested in Masters Swimming for physical fitness, weight and stress control ," he says. "The competiton is a fringe benefit for those who want the challenge. For me, having a specific com· petltive goal provides the motiva- tion to train harder." The main Masters competl· tlons are the Natlonals which are divided into two segments, the Long Course and Short Course, and the Zone Championships. The Woodlands Athletic Center hosted the Short Course Na· tlonals In 1982 and the Zone Championships in 1984 and again this year. "We sent 21 people from The Woodlands to the nationals In Florida this past May, " Boak says. The team now has Its own coach, Denise Welch, and organized workouts in the morn- ings and evenings. "It's been gratifying to be in· volved In the development of the Masters Program from the begin· ning, because I've watched It grow and become a part of the extensive athletic programs In The Woodlands, he says. "Because it's an adult program, we act as role models for some of the younger swimmers at the Center and encourage them to compete no matter what their level of expertise might be." Those who know Boak well and have trained with him over the years, say he has even higher goals for the Masters Program. "One of his goals Is Improve- ment of International relations through competition," says Wan· da Mason, a fellow Masters swimmer. TOM BOAK MASTER IWIMMIR RETURNS FROM TOKYO

A THIRD REASON TO SWIM .... Obviously, swimming tones the muscles or whatever end tunes the card1o-vascular pump and tube apparatus. Swimming News NO FOG TIP - (From Adirondack Masters via Conn Ma sters via Ssoutheastern Masters) Instead of buying expensive NO FOG solutions, mix NTS (No Tears Shampoo) half and half with water. Try it! You'll never use anything else! (Ed. note: I did and I do! ! ) . . ........... . . . ...... . ...... . .. . . CONNIE WILSON BY EARL WALTER - A time to remem-ber, a great and fine person, whose happy smile plus infectious laugh , made each and every day that much better, that much the greater for Ore-gon Masters, and for everyone. Connie Wilson, teh founder and Chairman Emeritus of Oregon Mas-ters Swimming died on July 22nd. She was in swimming and athletics from almost the day she was born; a fine volleyball player and coach at Portland State , PSU was then a power in women's volleyball, a gold medalist and national champ-ion Masters Track and Field, a National Champion and Oregon's first All American in Masters Swim-ming. 1986 was a difficult year for Connie, she was ill on and off , but still was willing and able to assist with the planning for the Long Course Championships at MHCC. In the water she was almost her old self, winning a silver in the backstroke at Nationals and swimming a leg on our gold medal Women's Medley Relay Team , also at Ft. Pierce. Yes, a time to remember, when things were darkest for Oregon Masters Swimming , with only two or three dozen swimmers and all in

disarray, ,she stepped into th~ breach. Connie's leadership was immediately evident, Masters Swimming in Oregon was alive an? w~ll. I f~rst met Connie in 1974 at the Association Champion-ships in Beaverton, Masters was going well, growing by leaps and bounds , she single hand~dly was building one of the finest Masters organiza-tions in the country , am happy to say that she asked to join the team, she continued with un-matched energy to build Oregon Masters Swimming as well as Masters Swimmi ng in the Northwest and across the country. Connie went to almost every National U.S. Masters Convention, was selected by three national presidents to serve as a dele-gate at large, turned over the reins in Oregon after building OMS into the sixth largest organ-ization in the USA, as we all know she did not stop there, she kept right on working, going to conventions, helping us get the Nationals in 1982, helping in all ways, including re~istration for a couple of years. From the little girl who swam a mean backstroke for MAC, to the fine person who helped us all in so many ways, yes, we will remember Connie Wilson, and we will miss her in so many many ways .. . ........... . LONG COURSE NATIONALS - 933 swimmers competed in the Long Course Nationals held in Portland, OR in August. Sandi Rousseau and her crew did an outstanding job! The meet ran very swiftly and was most enjoyable. The weather was HOT (and I live in Florida). But better hot than cold! The banquet was really good and the old swim suits modeled were different. Hope to have the final results for the next issue ............ . WHAT IS AN OXYMORON? - It is a figure of speech (like metaphor, similie, hyperbole, personio-fication ... ) in which a phrase produces an effect by a seeming self-contradiction . The most fa-miliar are "strangely familiar" , "cruel kindness~ and "make haste slowly". They provide color, impact and an appropriate level of 'Gong Show' mentality in what might be either too serious or boring. It is exactly what is needed in swim-ming writing. One day I went to the pool and de-cided to communicate in oxymorons. It was taper time and the water was a little too hot . During the workout, I made the following statements: "At this water temperature it feel s like a dry wetness". "With my lactate levels, my edge is gone. I have a kind of rough smoothness." "We can ease into these sprints with s slow quick-ness." "Swimming the 1500 correctly requires that you experience euphoric pain". Unfortunately, people who had heard about oxymoron month did't take it seriously enough. I was treated with respectful scorn. This can really launch us into the future of high level publications i n swimming which we are all trying to achieve. By - Ross W. Lambert, Jr., M.D . . .. ............. .
