If you have not been to the Wigan Festival before (where have you been for the last 10 years?) we sincerely hope you have a great time at our event.

Returning visitors will hopefully fi nd we have yet again provided a fantastic range of real ales, ciders and perries, and foreign draught beer for your delectation!

This year, following popular demand, we will be offering all our draught beverages in third pint measures which, together with the policy of restricting sales of all products of 8% or above abv to halves or third pint sales is in keeping with CAMRA’s national policy of promoting responsible drinking. The added bonus to our customers is you can try even more wonderful real ales/ciders or beers!

As always our festival charity, benefi ting from your donations of unused, unwanted beer tokens is Wigan Hospice.

This year too the North West Air Ambulance charity will benefi t from our Festival as Paul Wood of Martland Mill Brewery has kindly donated Lancashire Loom to be sold in memory of Stan Morris, a popular volunteer at our Festival, who sadly passed away quite suddenly in November.

Our range of drinks are complimented by our excellent caterers : Helen of Wigan Leisure & Culture trust catering, Cath who promises us Asian and Mexican food this year and Mel & Steve of Melbourne catering serving their traditional german sausages and french crepes. We believe we offer a great varied range of food for a Festival of this size !

Welcome back to Merry Berry Chocolate Truffl es and to new concessions from Pipers Crisps and Viking Drinking Horns.

As always if you experience any problems with our Festival please come and speak to us rather than

going away unhappy. We will do our best to assist if we can!

Anyway... enough rabitting from us – enjoy the Festival!

Cheers!Brian Gleave & Ken WorthingtonFestival Organisers

WIGAN CAMRA WANTS YOU!

FESTIVAL ENTERTAINMENT

NEW YOUNG MEMBERS NEEDED

A HOST OF GREAT ENTERTAINMENT

Do you remember your fi rst Real Ale? The smell, the taste, the colour, the clarity? Do you remember your fi rst Beer Festival? The

atmosphere, the beer selection? More and more people are choosing taste! Beer

festivals today are fi lling up with younger people thirsty for the fl avour that only a Real Ale can quench! Young men and women are partaking in a pint of the good stuff knowing that nowadays “Real Ale is sexy!”

My name is Jo, and I am Wigan CAMRA’s Young Members Offi cer. It’s my aim to show all the young people here that Real Ale is the future. If you’re aged

between 18-30, I would like to invite you to join Wigan CAMRA as a young member. There are so many benefi ts to being a CAMRA Member; reduced entry at beer festivals, CAMRA discounts at participating pubs, social events and brewery tours – and of course campaigning to keep great Real Ale fl owing in our favourite pubs and bars.

What’s the matter? Afraid you might taste something? Ask at the membership stand for more information.

Jo Whalley - Young Members Offi cer – Wigan Camra

Whilst we aim to provide excellent entertainment during the Festival it should be noted that the acoustics in a sports hall differ considerably to that in a performing arts venue sometimes this has a detrimental impact despite the best efforts of our bands.

We would remind customers that our primary aim is to provide a good beer festival and that we are not entertainment promoters.

Friday afternoon session is a quiet session for customers who prefer a music free drink.

CHONKINFECKLEThursday 5th March 20:00 - 23:00We are a Wigan band that live to play original folk(ish) songs. These songs tell stories of work, wives, kids, and the Mother-in-law! In other words; a true life account of life in a Northern town, in which we will also throw in a little bit of the local dialect for good measure. . We’ve been seen on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky-TV! BILLY & THE TEMPERAMENTALSFriday 6th March 20:00 - 23:00We are a Wigan -based band has been together in slightly different guises for 8 or 9 years now. You probably have seen us at previous Wigan Beer Festivals. Our eclectic repertoire makes The Temperamentals a band for all occasions.

KISS THE BLARNEYSaturday 7th March 13:00 - 16:00Three piece Irish band playing uptempo and cheerful music on a vast array of instruments including fi ddle, banjo, accordion, fl ute, sax, mandolin guitar and anything else we can get a tune out of that we fi nd lying about the stage! RUN OUT THE GUNSSaturday 7th March 17:00 - 22:00Run Out The Guns was formed in late 2009 and is a four piece acoustic lineup featuring Guitar, Fiddle, Mandolin, Banjo, Bouzouki, Bass and Percussion, mixing our own music with songs, shanties, jigs and reels from the distant past to the modern day. We are delighted to be playing the Wigan Beer Festival again and Looking forward to getting those feet stomping and glasses raised for a great night!

REAL ALE SECTIONSKOL! SKOL! SKOL!

Thankfully that strange yellow brew I recall as a youth will defi nitely not be feature at this festival! Much as we might like to do with nearly

1500 breweries in the UK this year there is no way to get every beer and every brewer in. Over 50% of the beer at the festival this year is from inside our branch borders, or from a brewery in a local branch. We’ll have to keep swapping which of the many LocAle brewers who appear each year so you the drinker don’t miss out, and the brewers know we know they’re there!!

We’ve got a lot of styles, and fl avours - if you don’t like a certain beer try another!

Please try not to drink with your eyes. Drink with your mouth & see what you can fi nd?

The fun starts with the debate & your journey into the unknown seas of beer research! Will you fi nd a beer worthy to be taken to Asgard? Will you fi nd a beer you think deserves a permanent place in Valhalla, the Hall of the Norse Gods??

CIDER & PERRYWELCOME TO THE CIDER & PERRY BAR SECTION

CIDER

Welcome to the cider bar. Firstly words of warning - our products are strong! This is not your awful standard fi zzy cider you

fi nd on draft or in bottles, these have about twice the alcohol content. Before you ask we don’t have fl avoured ciders!

Everything here is made only from 100% natural fruit. This means apples (Cider) and pears (Perry). Different types of apples and pears produce different levels of sweetness. Therefore some of our Ciders and Perrys are blends of different varieties; think blended whisky. For the connoisseur we have single varieties made from just one type of fruit; like a single malt whisky. These are marked in the programme as SV. These are special, try a few and you’ll start to

understand the art of blending cider. For example, Fox Whelp is extremely dry on its own, but blend in just 10% to other apples and you get a pleasing medium or dry cider that’s full of fl avour.

Please drink responsibly; if the cider is over 8% we will only sell you one half or a third at a time. Consider drinking half anyway, you can try more that way. But most importantly have a good time, be considerate to the volunteers behind the bar, and ask as many questions as you like; they’ll love talking cider to you.

Finally if you see a * next to the cider it means we only have one tub, when its gone its gone!

Enjoy your festival!
