Saltford Com..munity Assoc-iation News
Issue No 37 APRIL2001/MAY2001
LADIES - URGENT - HELP NEEDED
Saltford Brownies & Guides are facing a crisis.
As from Easter , 2 Brownie units and 1 Guide unit may face closure due to a shortage of uniformed helpers. If you are able to spare a couple of hours a week you can help to stop this happening. Brownies are from the age of 7 - 10 and Guides from the age of 10 - 15. It would be a shame to see these units close as many girls have enjoyed their time in this
organisation. It can only continue with people kindly volunteering their help. For more information contact :

Project 0102 Have you read the flyer accompanying this newsletter? Hopefully it will encourage you to read this article and react to il. Last year both the Chairman and Vi.ce Chairman of the Saltford Commumty Association (SCA) retired and so we were unable to find replacements.
Perhaps the structure is nol well known?
SCA membership is SOp annually, eollected by your local each Autumn. Included are some from outside Saltford, of the Sectional Organisations, and from this membership the Council is formed balanced by a similar number of representatives from Affiliated
This ruling body elects three Standing Comminees Building, General and Management and Finance and each elects a chairman.
The main focus is of course, Salt ford Hall itself and much of the time in the committee meetings is taken in debating the running and funding of the Within the Sectional groups are formed who pay no fees but whose funds to the SCA. Local groups affiliated to the Association pay a reduced hiring fee in return for with the maintenance and running of the site. Just glance at the list elsewhere in this publication and see the wide r~ng~ of activities that take Organisations outside Saltford, many of them nationally known, hire the hall for their functions and find the convenience of the location and the open aspect of the

particu larJy atlractive.
So the organisational structure of the Association is:-
President - not so much a .. hands-on" position but more of an position.
the overall "hand on the tiller" .
.!..!:~==:.== - assistant/deputy, responsible for
the collection of and keeping membership records (new helpers are now required to collect in their immediate vicinity). ~~!3!'!!::"':~~!<..!.. - looks after the general domestic needs of the Hall from soap to

fiscal affairs have to meet certain standards. Booking Officer - keeping the diary of bookings and planning the long-term calendar of the use of the nr"n"~p"
All of the above are are nol paid and afC open to ladies or
gentlemen. The AGM on 22 March 2001 may have been able to till most of these posts but if any of them interest you please get in touch as each of these posts could readily accept Ihe offer of 4:>',.' .... ,,,,",, it would be good to think thaI some younger members of the Salt ford Community could operate in with each of these posts as many of the prcsent post-holders have served for a long time. your children have now gone to school and a couple of hours a day from time to time would help to pass the time. And why not find out about the mysteries of the Booking Office by offering to help once month when about 35 invoices have to be calculated and prepared. It would be good to have an assistant to cover holidays too.
Mention must be made of our caretaker and her team who, together with our security man, comprise our paid staff. A splendid job is achieved preparing the five rooms for incoming hirers including laying out tables and chairs according to requests - a service rarely available at other venues. This occurs several times a day, sometimes late at night or first thing in the morning ready for an early booking. Slack Summer periods are used to catch up on cleaning routines. Our part time security man keeps an eye on the premises when hirers are considered vulnerable to rowdyism, particularly ladies meetings or late night bookings.
Over the ne ... t year we are running a project to raise the awareness of the local population of the association, the hall and its facilities and an article will appear under this heading in each subsequent issue of SCAN.

FeblA1ar A review of "Project 0102" .
The constitution of the Association states that "the objects are to promote the wellbeing of the community resident in Saltford by associating the local authorities, voluntEry organisations and residents in a common effort to further health: to advance education: to provide facilities lor physical and mentE I training, recreational and social developments and to foster a community spirit for the achievement oflhese and other ch,uilllble objects, "and "to maintEin and manage a Community Centre (Saltford Hall) for the activities promoted by the Association and its constituent bodies in the furtherance;' of any or all of the above objects".
It is impossible to publish here the four pages of the constitution but the above paragraph is sufficient to show our aims. Although it was drawn up in the late 1950's very little could be changed today that would be an improvement - a/l .. ~ need are people who identify with the Y/llue of these BiI1l5 to help inplement them Are you one of them?

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk. - Mrs M L M Sabey, 489, Bath Road, Sa/tford, Bristol BSJI JBA Tel: 400058 YOUTH SEATING, SALTFORD HALL Further discussions have taken place with the Sports Club to find an acceptable now for the installation of a area for young people, providing them with a meeting place. Compromises have been made by a range of groups, including the Sports Club, residents nearest the proposed seat (who have been consulted directly by the police), and the young people themselves who will not be gaining the activity wall they requested, The Parish Council recognises thai there is no ideal solulion bUI has given iL~ backing to a trial of the site near Wed more Road car park, totally funded by B&NES Community Safety. This will be monitored by all parties and a decision will be made after six months as 10
whether the sealing should be retained, The Parish Council's sweepers will be check.ing the area regularly. A RELIEF ROADIBY PASS FOR SALTFORD Parish Council members have mel with Ihe local MP 10 highlight the concerns about the volume of traffic through Saltford. Funds for a study the potential effect of a bypass needs B&NES Council's support in its Local Transport Plan and would form part of a bid for transportation funding with other schemes put forward by B&NES Council. The Parish Council recognises that clear support from residents would be required before incurring further public expenditure and will short.ly be deciding the most effective way of consulting residents which will obtain the maximum response rate. OTHER mGHWAY MATTERS The Parish Council's bid for the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit in the High Street and The Shallows bas been rated highly enough by B&NES Council 10 give it a good chance of being introduced during the next financial year. A financial contribution from the Parish Council was necessary to increase its priority rating. Resurfacing of Norman Road and Beech Road should be completed during Marchi April, as should the street lighting replacement in an extensive part of Sahford between Sail ford Hall. Bath Road and Beech Road. A site meeting has been requested with B&NES Council 10 ensure that repairs are undertaken to damaged verges and the road in Mead Lane following extensive works at the weir and lock. REI<l]SE COLLECTION Each household should have received a B&NES Council leaflet in the last week or so, giving details of the changes to the refuse collection from 2nd April. The collection for most of Salt ford will change from Tuesdays 10 Wednesdays, with a few less accessible areas changing to Moodays. Please note, however that this new routine will be disrupted by Easter (see dates on separate page) and two bank holidays in May. If you do experience difficulties, please contact B&NES Council's Action Line 01225394041. PUBLIC CONSULTATION A Parish Councillor will be in the Parish Council Office (through Davies & Way estate agenl<;) on Saturday 21s1 April 2001 10.00 am to 11.00 am 10 discuss any mailers with Salt ford residents. You also have the chance to raise issues at the Parish Meeting on Tuesday 300 April al 6.30 pm in the Avon Room, Sallford Hall. There is also a time set aside al each regular monthly Parish Council meeting for residents to comment on Sail ford malters (first Tuesday of each month, 7.45 pm in the A von Room, Salt ford Hall).

SAL TFORD MORNING TOWNSWOMENS' GUfl,O The members at the February meeting heard Mr Bob Porton speaking about the ancient city of Wells. He touched briefly on the history of Vicars Close and The Liberty, Penniless Porch and the truly beautiful St Cuthbert's Church. His main theme was however, the Cathedral, the Patron Saint being St Andrew. The next time we visit the Cathedral we will look up inside and discover figures we never knew were there that tell quite a bit of history about the time the Cathedral was built. In March the Wansdyke Room was packed for the A.G.M. In the absence of the President who was unable to attend because of sickness, Mrs Joan Gloyn took the chair. Mr Roberts, the Booking Officer for Salt ford Hall gave a
brief account of the hoped for for the Association and took note of comments from members. The Secretary presented reports of the year's activities and plans for next year were announced. A short talk was by the Care Manageress of the local centre of the Alzheimer that has been chosen as the charity for the year. After the conclusion of the business section there was time for coffee and plenty of time for members to chat with each other, a rare as monthly
leave little time for social chat.
SAL TFORD AFfERNOON TOWNSWOMENS' GUILD Sadly this is the last time that I will be writing on behalf of the Guild. We are
and our last meeting is in March. I recently went to see "Look Back in Anger", an My thoughts ahout the Guild are just the opposite and I look back with pleasure. I have explored so many things because of the Guild. Ten years is quite some time and I can only mention some of the speakers who have visited us. Many of our speakers have been excellent and their subjects have been of enormous interest. I have tried . lace making and
seen wonderful slides of Canada and New explored the whole length of the River had at first hand an "Antique Roadshow", dug for precious stones in South Africa, had the hilarious pleasure of Pauline Beach of the Silver Ring Choir and met the disabled young man with his

enlarging As well as having lots of outings together we have been to many shows at the Hippodrome in Bristol. Notably our first show was "The Nutcracker" and our lasl show was "The Nutcracker" and both times these were voted an enormous success. We have had some wonderful social afternoons and initially we were entertained by our drama group .. Barbara was a memorable on the Christmas Tree. Out skittles team bewildered themselves by winning the Federation Skittles Cup. We have some wonderful cooks among our members making pavlovas, gateaux and all the delicious goodies you need to make a
go with a swing. Our major achievement was the amount of money we gave to various charities. We never had a large membership but the year we chose Dorothy House as our charity we gave then over £ 1,000. I never-the-Iess believe that one of our best efforts was knitting dozens of knee blankets for Keynsham Hospital. Our Guild has always been cheerful happy and doing lots of things. think most of our members will keep some happy memories of it. I am off to join Saltford Morning T.G. and wish you all a cheerful life.
Best wishes,
