Considering computer penetration, Internet usage and thespread of mobile phones, Sweden has undoubtedly becomethe world’s leader of the infotech revolution in -.As a natural result, Swedish entrepreneurs, as well as “old”industry and organizations, have became absorbed withwireless technologies, applications and business oppor-tunities. This is mirrored in BHM’s Wireless Survey. Themagazine located and checked data of companies. Topexecutives were interviewed. It is the first time such a hugeamount of material has been collected, culled, organized andpresented to the public.

This past year, journalists, business people and politiciansfrom outside the Land of the Midnight Sun have frequentlyasked: “Why Sweden and why Stockholm?” BrainHeartMagazine likes to answer this question by starting with adescription of the social, technical, historical and psycho-logical factors behind Sweden’s entrepreneurial wave at theturn of the century. Which brings us to today and back tothe question:

“Why are there so many Swedish Wireless businesses?”The reasons, boiled down to fit a wireless screen:– Widespread consumer use of PCs, Internet, mobile phones.– The existence of a highly advanced wired and wirelessinfrastructure.– Leading edge, competing telecom equipment companies:Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia.– Sophisticated internationaltelecom operators: Telia, Tele2and Europolitan.– Deregulation in resultedin many new operators enteringthe Swedish market. Today, thereare close to competing here.– Swedes have adopted theInternet fastest in Europe, andhave developed and appliedwireless standards includingGSM, Bluetooth, WAP.

include telecommunications equipment companies, tele-com operators, consultants and a number of data communi-cation companies from the s. They keep up with newtrends, and often provide financing to new, small, wirelessventures.

,

.

The study shows that the majority of the companies overallare relatively small in the number of employees. Almost two-thirds of the companies, percent, have fewer than

employees, while percent have between and

employees, and percent have over employees. Sevencompanies have more than , employees, among thelargest being Ericsson, Europolitan and Telia Mobile. About, people work in companies started after January .

,

. Many of theprivately held companies, because of their being so new, have not taken in any external financing. The most commonexternal financiers in the wireless sector are the Swedishventure capital companies: Startupfactory, Ledstiernan,BrainHeart Capital or Speed Ventures. Some of the large, established companies invest in projects within the companyor in start-ups via their own venture capital subsidiaries.Examples of this are Telia and Ericsson, as well as Volvo. All are fully aware of the necessity to attract and promoteinternal entrepreneurial human capital.

:

– Mobile Personal Services, i.e. applications, or enablingtechnologies for those applications, targeting the end usersuch as location-based services, m-commerce or mobilebanking. ( companies).– Wireless Broadband, i.e. network and operator services ofall kinds ( companies).– Machine-to-machine (M2M) services, i.e. applicationswhere machines communicate with each other via theInternet. ( companies).

Not surprisingly, the survey shows most companies directlyor indirectly aim their business at end-users (Mobile Per-sonal Services).

.A summary of replies shows thatcompanies’ activities can be divided mainly into five types. Many work in several fields at the same time:

– content providers (%)– software development (%)– equipment and hardware (%)– wireless network (%)– consulting (%)

,

Something dramatically changedin the minds of young, well-educated people, in theirimagination and in their dreams about professional success. In the latter part of the s, more students wanted tobecome a new Jonas Birgersson, founder of Framfab, or anew Johan Stäel von Holstein, founder of Icon Media Lab.Earlier, during the s and s, the same young peoplewould prefer traditional careers at Ericsson, Volvo or ABB.Birgersson, von Holstein and two or three other young entre-preneur media stars assumed the same roles in the world ofSwedish Internet and wireless business as once Björn Borgdid for tennis, or ABBA and Roxette for pop music: theybecame the idols, the life style models, the cult figures.

Ericsson and Telia themselves have become importantrecruiting bases for the new innovative companies, com-parable with the role Hewlett Packard played when SiliconValley was young.

Even if the entrepreneurs behind the “-generation”are in their s and s, their companies have often attractedexperienced board members. When looking at commentsunder “Management” in the BHM Survey presentation, onerecognizes many well-known entrepreneurs, industrialistsand venture capitalists among members of the boards. “GreyPanthers” – also called “The Oldies” – have always beenwelcomed to the Swedish new economy; they have playedand still play an important role. Even more of them can befound among the new venture capitalists.

,

.

In the autumn of , one could find ten private venturecapital companies working with technology endeavors. Inthe autumn of , there are VC companies, morethen half of them focused on IT, Internet, and wireless. Thetotal volume of venture capital in this area is difficult toestimate. A survey in Swedish business magazine VeckansAffärer in the summer of gave a figure of SEK

billion (US $ billion) while Förvärv och Fusioner, aSwedish publication on mergers and acquisitions, offeredin October a total of SEK billion (US $ billion).

But whatever the precise number, according to PriceWaterhouse Cooper, Sweden has the world’s fastest growingventure capital market and is number three measured inavailable private equity and venture capital per capita in relationto GDP (Gross Domestic Product), after the USA and UK.

The future perspective is painted extremely bright by theentrepreneurs interviewed in the survey. Despite the recentdown-turn of the stock market for the IT industry world-wide, many of the “-generation” CEOs look forwardto public offerings in two or three years. One surprising factturned up by the survey is that only percent of the companieswork in the field of machine-to-machine (M2M). Manyforecasters say that applications in M2M will have the great-est potential in the future. For example, NTT DoCoMoestimates that up to percent of its future subscribers willbe machines, and not people, connected to the Internet.

HALEBOP – CONTENT PROVIDERHalebop is an attractive solution for distributing content via wireless. The company was formed by Telia and Oracle, which each own 40percent of the firm, with the remaining 20 percent owned by foundersand employees. Its goal is to create a channel to large user groupsworldwide. Halebop has chosen not to create content itself but onlyto distribute content for other actors. For example, a wireless usercan buy tickets from a theater chain, send flowers via a shop, orobtain latest stock prices, news or TV material. Users register freeas a member of Halebop, and pay no fee other than usual wirelesstime. “Our customers are the established companies that need newchannels,” says Jonas Wilhelmsson, chief operating officer.

Halebop serves as the link between operators and contentsuppliers. The company has agreements with all Swedish wirelessphone operators, even though one of the Halebop owners is a largeoperator. This means that a user can be a subscriber to any mobileoperator but still use Halebop services. Halebop reports that it signedup 220,000 subscribers in just a few months after the service waslaunched in 2000 – a launching the required four years of preparation.Halebop’s 30 employees are from both Telia and Oracle, providingthe company with a combination of telecom and programmingcompetence. Users employ all types of technology: mobile phoneswith SMS or WAP capability or hand-held computers. Halebop’s ownportal program links all conceivable distribution channels, thusproviding a universal solution.

RED CYBER – SOFTWARE DEVELOPERRed Cyber is one of many new wireless companies that producessoftware. However, the 24-employee company is noteworthy inone aspect: 20 of its programmers work in a development centerin Shanghai. The four founders of Red Cyber have all worked inChina, several for Ericsson there, and they gained both the contactnetwork and language knowledge that is necessary to get into theChinese market. Now, they are assisting other Swedish wirelesscompanies to do the same. “Next year China will be the world’slargest wireless market,” says Jörgen Nordlund, managing director.“There are about three million new mobile phone users per month! In year 2004, there will be 250 million users in China. And since youcan figure that all mobile phones sold in four years will have someform of Internet access, the Chinese will jump over the technicalphase that we are now in Internet via PCs. They will adjust theirInternet behavior directly to the smaller display screen.”

Red Cyber’s philosophy is to be ready and on the scene for theChinese boom. Presently, the company works with programming andcoding for Swedish companies. They can do this at half the price inChina. They also serve as consultants to help companies packageapplications for wireless Internet in China, for example, creating aChinese interface for a music portal. “We want to stand on our ownfeet as long as possible with the help of programming assignmentsuntil the market really matures,“ explains Mr. Nordlund.

COMHAT – HARDWARE PRODUCERComhat in Mölndal, outside Gothenburg, is a rare example of anewly-started Swedish wireless company that produces hardware. The company has rights to a patent for a link antenna used forcommunication between base stations in a mobile network. Thepatent is based on innovations by Professor Per Simon Kildal ofChalmers Institute of Technology of Gothenburg. Comhat’scustomers are other systems designers and manufacturers in thewireless world. Venture capital companies’ interest in companiesbased on patents is expected to increase as a result of the shake-upof dot-com companies, especially in B2C (business to consumer)companies during last year. There is no problem for additionalfinancing for manufacturers like Comhat, those that have a solidproduct. The Comhat antenna is a geometrically smaller parabolicantenna that is cheaper than others. It is in strong demand duringthe expansion of new generations of mobile networks.

POWERNET – WIRELESS NETWORKPowerNet, of Stockholm, is a good example of how new technologycan create entirely new business alongside established operators’nation-wide mobile networks. PowerNet works with geographicallylimited area radiocommunication, at 2 Mbit/second, for Internetsurfing. “We started with wireless solutions for offices, but weintend to widen our services to small home districts and specialsurfing zones. These are outside large cities and are not reached bybroadband Internet via copper wire and fiber optics,” says FredrikGraff, one of the company founders. PowerNet´s customers haveordinary PCs, using radio technology for transmission, which is aform of wireless Internet. “It´s a little difficult to understand forthose who have money, the venture capitalists,” Mr. Graff explains.“It takes time to explain what new technology can accomplish.”

NORTHSTREAM – CONSULTINGNorthstream is one of the many consultant companies working inwireless. Founded in 1998, Northstream has 44 employees and, inaddition to the head office in Stockholm, has offices in Sofia Antipolis,France, and Tokyo. The company has attracted technical competencefrom Sweden’s worlds of telecom and business analysis. It offersassistance to wireless actors worldwide in preparing licenseapplications to governmental authorities. Northstream has contractswith large operators and systems suppliers, including Vodafone, NTTDoCoMo Europe, Utfors, AT&T, Sonera, Ericsson and Siemens. But,like most consultants, it has other operations as well. It providessoftware for GPRS connections for company networks.“Manyinvestors don´t understand the business logic in wireless” saysTommy Ljunggren, one of the founders.

It is quite likely that even in the future we will seeSwedish start-ups acquired by foreign interests. Sweden’sleading position in the wireless field, and the relativelylimited market in geography and population makes this anexcellent test bed for large corporations. [See the separatelist on page of the international companies that recentlyestablished development centers in Stockholm.] And onequite certain final forecast: increasingly tough competitionwill continue to emerge from the American market.
