Thanks to the conception of our new rubbers, Torpedo and Rapid X-Press, we are entering a new rubber dimension in regards to the rubbers´ quality and game potential which mains characteristics are the following:

• a harder and faster rubber surface

• a new gluing technique of the rubber surface with the sponge

• a new sponge with an extraor-dinary strength

• an extremely adhering and long-lasting rubber surface

TorpedoPimples inwards. Red, black.Thicknesses: 1,8 / 2,0 / max. With this new rubber we have developed a rubber with phenomenal playing characteristics and almost unlimited flexibility. Resulting from a special gluing technique of the rubber surface with the sponge, the integrated dynamic gives its full potential by speed gluing. The extremely adhering and tensed rubber surface provides your balls a fighter’s energy. The tension in the very adhering rubber surface confers, despite all the strength of your strokes, an irresistible sensation, enabling you to exhaust your repertoire. Torpedo is recommended for speed gluing which will confer a sensational sound. Torpedo - hard to believe that such a speed rubber can provide so much sensations.

Rapid X-PressPimples inwards. Red, black.Thicknesses: 1,6 / 1,8 / 2,0 / max. This new rubber is the fruit of researches on the TIBHAR best-seller „RAPID“. Vladimir Samsonov contributed to the development of this new rubber. Its characteristics are an explosive and spin-friendly surface, but this rubber also makes half-distance strokes easier and more powerful. The combination of the new rubber surface with a new and relative hard sponge confers to this rubber an extraordinary power and a very good sound by speed gluing.

PRESIDENT’S REPORTThe past few months have flown by and we are well on the way to our next AGM in Rotterdam. All necessary information for those who wish to attend can be found in this issue and we look forward to meeting you once again. You will also find the Agenda and a copy of the revised SCI Constitution, which the Executive Committee was authorised to develop by our AGM in Moscow last year.

This enables you to study the proposed Constitution in preparation for the meeting. Naturally, we shall be pleased to answer any questions relating to this revised edition if felt necessary. I am happy to report that we have been represented at the various events which have taken place during the past year. Our members have been well taken care of and have enjoyed meeting old friends and opponents of years ago! I think I can safely say that the Swaythling Club is the “heart” of table tennis, beating not only for it’s own generation but also for the youth. The generosity of organisers to our members throughout the years has at times been overwhelming. For Rotterdam we experienced this first hand. Sandra Paovic, who was seriously injured in a car accident some time ago and has made a remarkable reco-very, was extended an invitation, which included her assistant, to attend the World event Rotterdam next May. Unfortunately, she cannot accept due to additional therapy - she is however, deeply moved over such kindness. The usual work of our administration – I sincerely thank Secretary Gloria Wagener, Treasurer Werner Schnyder, Hans Westling as WVC Committee Chairman and all Directors for their efforts, inclu-ding for example many contacts to National sec-tions of the SCI regarding preparations for this issueof the News, the new SCI Booklet and, of course, ar-rangements for the pre-sentations to be held in Rotterdam for the World Veteran Championships 2014. At the moment, we have six countriesshowing interest in tak-ing part in the bid for this prestigious event.Take care!

Rene Roothooft 3-2, after trailing 0-2 and after in the quarters he beat Alex Ehrlich 3-0. In the semi’s he lost to Johnny Leach (reigning World Champion) with 1-3.During the period of 1937-1955 he represented his country 92 times!During his career he beat such well-known players as Ehrlich, Roothooft, Koczian, Vogrinc, Agopoff, Dubouille, Malmquist, Johansson, Fritsch and with partner Cor Pelser (Nedlloyd) in Apeldoorn in 1955 the doubles of Zarko Dolinar and Vilim Harangozo.Together with his brother Jaap du Buy he managed Cor du Buy Sport (bv) who sponsored the EC in Rotterdam (Energiehall) in 1972. IN MEMORIAM DAL-JOON (D.J) LEE, 1939-2010 (USA)

Born in South Korea of wealthy parents, owners of a hotel and restaurant who to-gether with his sister were assassinated and a bomb reduced their home and fa-mily business to ashes. Lee peddled sweet potatoes for a few pennies with which he would buy rice!

As D-J. gradually came of age, he started to play table tennis and for three deca-des it was his whole life and he practiced eight hours a day – seven days a week. In the U.S.A. he practices five-six hours a day. He also - with his playing arm - would lift an eight pound weight at lea-st 200 times daily and swing his racket 200 times more – which he felt was for mental rather than physical condition!!! It was a confidence builder - I know that I am stronger and in better shape than my opponent, so I win!

In the l960 Bombay Asian Games Lee defeated former twice World Champion

Ichiro Ogimura in the Team Event – then lost to him in the singles event – having beaten Nobuya Hoshino (World ranked 16) and Teruo Murakami (World ranked 4).

During 1964-65-66, D-J toured 58 coun-tries giving exhibitions with four-time World Champion Richard Bergmann for the Harlem Globetrotters. After retirement he had to make a living. So he began to sell wigs, when he met Linda Williams of Columbus. They married in 1967 and have a son Jeffrey.

Lee represented the U.S. in four conse-cutive World Championships from 1969-75.

In 1983, after he had stopped playing he was in 1983 inducted into the U.S. Table Tennis Hall of Fame – ever to be remem-bered as one of the greatest and most stal-wart of champions.

IN MEMORIAM DICK MILES, 1925-2010 (USA)

Dick Miles, ten-times record holder of the Men’s Singles National title winner, started his career in table tennis at Mitch Karelitz’s Club at 76th Street and Broad-way.

As in the case of most exceptional play-ers, Dick had an unusual stroke - his fore-hand drive which later became his trade-mark throughout his career. It was produced by an incredibly fast circular whip of the forearm and wrist – giving an effect of a fast bounding ball with twice as much topspin as most other players. Also noticeable was just how close to his side he kept his elbow throughout, giving an

impression of compactness! A truly out standing player, it would appear he suf-fered considerably throughout his career - from nervous tension in vital matches. Nevertheless, during his playing years he had wins against such ‘greats’ as Victor Barna, Johnny Leach, Richard Bergmann, Ferenc Sido and Ferenc Soos. In 1948, partnered by Thelma Thall “Tybie” Som-mer, he won the Mixed Doubles Event. U.S.A have sadly lost a great player and a fascinating personality.

(Our thanks to Tim Boggan – USTTA Histo-rian for the articles on two of their finest players).
