Senior Leadership Camp
At Swan we are delighted with the ongoing training of student leaders both formally and informally. As part of the
leadership development program we run a Senior Leadership Training Camp, which was held this last weekend at
Lake Leschenaultia.
The purpose of this weekend is for the current leadership team, along with some additional Year 12 students, to
run a weekend for Year 11 students who are aspiring to be on the leadership team the following year.
We are often asked what these weekends are like and how were the students; the short answer is they are amazing

and outstanding. To be away for a weekend with such a fine group of young men and women who desire to learn
about what it means to be on a team; how to encourage and work together and how to develop a shared vision; is a
delightful way to invest into the lives of these individuals.
While we have normal staffing ratios at this camp, it is very clear that the expectation is for the leaders to run most
of the events. For those of you who had your children at camp you would have been extremely proud of the manner
in which they organised and managed their part. Meals were prepared, dishes cleared, activities were completed
with no need of reminding. There were a range of talks from Mr Eason, Miss Clicteur and myself, encouraging
students to think about leadership as opposed to management. It was indeed a privilege to be with these students
over the weekend.
I would also like to pass on my thanks to the all the staff who attended, for their support of this program.
Mr Mark Lewis
Principal
Congratulations AbbieAt the beginning of 2013, Year 10 student Abbie Connell, travelled to USA with her team 'Fit 2 Cheer - PANTHERS'
to compete in the 'All Things Cheer International Competition' in Seattle and the 'Duel in the Desert' competition
Palm Springs, California. The team placed second in Seattle and third in Palm Springs. Abbie and her team are
very proud of their achievements, as the USA is known as the home of Cheerleading. Currently, Abbie is a proud
member of the Cheerleading Team at Swan Christian College.
GRIP Student Leadership ConferenceThe Junior School Captains were privileged to have the opportunity to attend this year's GRIP Student Leadership
Conference. The conference is unique in that it concentrates specifically on training students for their role as
school leaders. The style, topics and content of this conference all focus on what students' can do right
now.

'We talked about different kinds of leadership and some of the things we can do to help and assist our school. We
had guest speakers who talked to us and showed us different ways of becoming better leaders. There were lots of
activities and games which involved meeting Captains from other schools. We all had a really great time together
with Miss Palmer and Mr Heglund, meeting new friends and learning skills to better lead in our College."

Congratulations Belinda!Belinda C in Year 6 has been selected in the Calisthenics Association of WA's 2013 State Team. Being selected for
the State Team is a wonderful achievement, as only a few representatives are chosen from the many who audition.
Belinda has committed herself to many hours of training, which shows her dedication to her chosen sport. Belinda
will be competing at the National Championships to be held in Melbourne in July.
We congratulate Belinda and wish her success.
Miss Guggisberg WeddingThursday 7 March, was the last day that Miss Guggisberg was employed at our College. However, that is only
because when she returns, she will be Mrs Harmon. On that Thursday morning, Miss G was married on Sorrento
Beach in a truly beautiful ceremony in what could only be described as perfect weather. Surrounded by friends,
family and her 2012 Year 3 class, the morning went perfectly with a ceremony expressing God's desire for life-long
love and happiness for the new Mr and Mrs Harmon.
There was a tangible excitement among the students on the bus to the ceremony and while waiting for the
formalities to begin, and this was a testament to the genuine relationship that Miss G had developed with her
students throughout 2012. During the ceremony, their behaviour was exemplary - even though a few of the boys
didn't like 'the kissing bit'.
We would like to wish Mr and Mrs Harmon all of God's richest blessings in their lives together.

Innovation InsightsThank you to all those parents who completed and submitted parent survey responses recently. The information
gathered was most useful to inform our planning for future Parenting with Technology sessions. The first of these
was held last night, Tuesday 19 March with 3 workshops that covered the topics of Educating with Edmodo;
Technology Talk (open discussion forum) and Technology Tools at home with Shane McGurk from Xcite Logic.
Thanks to those parents who attended this session, the first one for the year that saw a session run by CyberSmart.
There are plenty of resources for parents and students on this site at: www.cybersmart.gov.au
We encourage you to take a look and hope to see you at the next Parenting with Technology evening in Term 2.

Swan Junior School Jazz Vocal Ensemble Wedding Singers
On Saturday March 2, members of the Junior School ensemble sang 'The Stand/Hallelujah' and 'Joyful, Joyful' at
the wedding of Miss Anna Bough. The students sang beautifully and enjoyed the very special occasion and

'Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!'
This week in Kindergarten we have been exploring the narrative text 'The Gingerbread Man'. On Monday we joined
in the chase... and followed 'Ginge' all over the College. This experience created a great opportunity for the children
to learn a little more about their school environment. After we finally caught that speedy little Gingerbread Man, we
had the opportunity to make our own little dough man. We had so much fun!

Junior School Literacy Group
Mrs Gavin's literacy group have been working with Reader's Theatre this week. They have been practising the Jack
and The Beanstalk play and this week performed it for our friends in Year 4. Readers Theatre teaches lots of very
important skills such as: keeping our place, tracking, reading with accuracy, fluency and expression. Everyone had
a great time performing and watching.
Mystery Visitor
First we heard a noise. Then we saw them... Footprints... Giant footprints! So of course we had to investigate. We
followed them out the door, down the passage, to a room and that's where we found the note... and the presents.
The note said, 'Take these gifts and make something useful.' We opened the presents and found honey and
cornflakes, so we made honey joys. Yum! Yum! We think this visitor might be a bear and we think he might be
friendly, but who knows? We will be investigating further throughout the term.

Year 4LV Assembly
On Wednesday 13 March there was a special news broadcast brought to the Junior School by Class 4LV as part of
their assembly. 'Swan Christian College Today' brought news of some of the exciting things 4LV have been learning
about so far this term. Special news correspondents and class members told of the wonder of God's creation,
exciting new stories which had been written about the Rainbow Fish, topping it all off with some wacky mad
scientists reporting on Materials. Also a 'one afternoon only' exclusive episode of 'Who wants to be a Materials
Millionaire' presented by Edwina Maguire (AKA Miss Bruce) saw four contestants bid for this title with the winner
taking home $1,000,000 dollars (in Monopoly money!) for knowing all about the properties of materials. Thanks to
all the students, parents and staff who helped to make this assembly happen!

Lost Sports Clothing
There are large amounts of Sports Uniform items being left behind in the gym change rooms after Physical
Education lessons. These include shoes, shirts, shorts, school shoes with orthotics, towels and much, much, more.
If your child has misplaced or forgotten to take uniform items home then please remind them to check through the
box at student services to possibly retrieve them.
A Friendly Reminder about a Not So Friendly Mite, Head Lice/Nits.
Parents please check your child's hair for head lice. Lice are tiny brown mites that move around the hair and scalp.
Nits are the eggs, which are tiny and white and cling to the hair. These will hatch within a week, and become lice
(which are active for several weeks).
Signs: Itchy scalp and evidence of lice and nits on close inspection of the hair.
At home: Buy a solution and nit comb from your chemist and follow the instructions carefully (including washing of
clothes, bedding and hairbrushes in very hot water). Treat the whole family. Your child can return to school the next
day. Notify your school to be on watch for other breakouts.
Year 8 CellsThis term Year 8 have been learning about cells in Science. As well as different types of cells, they have explored
the structures and processes that can be found inside cells. They have learnt to use microscopes and have also

made their own cell models. The models demonstrated their knowledge, and gave students the chance to show
some impressive creativity.

transform a child's life by sponsoring one of these children. $30 per month tax deductible donation will help to
change a life. Please contact Murray Guy at Swan Christian College on 9374 8300 or email
[email protected] and visit our Global Development Group page to begin your monthly payments (be sure
