How to Raise Ideal and Devoted Children
Ajit Vadakayil
Many mothers, sisters with their straightforward nature believe that to
give birth to a child that is devoted to the Lord is not in her capacity, however
such a notion should never be entertained. Many mothers from rural areas
also believe that we are living in these small villages, what capability and
capacity do we have to understand and do? Being straightforward and free
of pride is an admirable quality in these mothers; however feeling of
hopelessness if of no use at all. Have faith that you can do some very great
work. All the women and men in this world, allinall were raised in the laps
of mothers; therefore mother is believed to be the very first Guru. It is
mother alone that does the most menial and the greatest of all work for the
child; like nursing, barbering, tailoring, washing clothes, teaching, and other
work. In Gurukuls, the RishiMunis used to teach the children, and after
completing the traditional course work, at the graduation ceremony they used

to give the following message before sending the children home
‘maatru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava, aachaarya devo bhava’
Meaning Understand the mother, father, and teacher to be visibly
and manifestly (saakshaat) a form of the Supreme.
In this mantra that was shared, the first place is given to the mother.
Best of best saints and sages, contemplative ones, great souls and righteous
men, men with ideal characters, valiant and brave ones were all born of
mothers. Those mothers and sisters who wish to give birth to such devotees
of God and ideal men, they must having a firm and determinate resolve,
conduct themselves in the best of best ways. In their minds must be that
divine wish that may my children be loving devotees of the Lord and an ideal
people. It has also been said in the "niti"

Great mothers have deep conviction and confidence, to such an extent
that ‘coming into my womb, drinking my milk, can this child ever drink the
milk of a bitch (female dog)? My child will forever remain at the Lotus Feet of
the Lord, drinking sweet nectar, and will continually spread nectar filled joy
and love to all in the world .’ Mothers whose sons become loving devotees
of the Lord, those mothers become eligible to receive gratitude. Those
mothers become such that there remains nothing more to be done by them.
Such power is in the hands of every mother, therefore do not lose hope. By
the grace of the Lord, nothing is impossible.

I want to say to mothers and sisters that after the completion of your
menstrual cycle, when you take a bath for purification, at that time pray to the
Lord that "O' Lord! Bestow upon me children that will benefit the entire world;
may they be loving devotees of the Lord." Whatever prayers are said with a
true heart, God fulfills these.
Sacche hrdey se praarthnaa jo bhakta saccha gaaya hai |
Bhaktavatsal kaan mein wah pahunch jhat hi jaaye hai ||
We have given honor and attention to outwardly things and have
accepted ourselves to be small thinking that I do not have the intellect, the
abilities, the knowledge, the wealth and I am also lacking in other things; but
we do not pay attention that we are God's. When we belong to God, then
what value remains of the intellect? Man makes himself small with worthless
sentiments. All brothers and sisters you are all "ansh" part of God only.

Saint Tulsidasji too has said this very same thing

We are God's and God is ours. Then pray to the Lord in this way "O'
Lord! Bestow me with a child that will be the illuminator of the family and
lineage, a child that will uplift the entire Universe, and one who will be a
loving devotee of the Lord. O' Lord! With Your grace, the child that will be

O’ Lord ! O’ My Lord ! May I never forget You !
born, may he be your loving devotee only." I would like to tell the older
mothers that they too should have similar sentiments, that their
grandchildren be born as saints and devotees of the Lord. It is proper for the
older mothers to deeply respect their daughterinlaws and daughters; and to
care for them with love. Let the sentiments be one of equality, where the
treatment towards one is not different and let there not be any disrespect for
them. Also, do not let impurities come in their daytoday living, eating and
their conduct. Create a pure and sanctified environment.
It has been seen in history that saints and great souls have also
protected, provided for and educated pregnant mothers to see to it that
devotees of the Lord are born. Just as it has come in the Bhagwat
At one time Hirayanyakashipu (demon) had gone to the forest to
engage in austerities and penance. His wife, Kayadhu, was pregnant at that
time. Indra was fearful that if the child of this demon is also born a demon,
then the "devatas" (demigods) will be troubled by both the father and son;
therefore why not take this pregnant lady somewhere and destroy the demon
child that is to be born off her. With these sentiments, Indra captured the
pregnant wife and was taking her away. On the way he met Naradji. Naradji
said Indra! Why are you causing suffering to this frail woman?' Indra
replied, 'she will give birth to a demon, then both the father and son will cause
great havoc and suffering to the "devatas", therefore I am taking her away to
destroy only her child.' Naradji replied 'do not fear, she will give birth only to
a divine child who will be a great and loving devotee of the Lord.' On hearing
this from Naradji's, Indra released Kayadhu. With Shri Naradji's immense
blessings and grace, he taught Kayadhu about devotion, knowledge and

"vairaagya" freedom from worldly desires; however the main focus of
attention was on the child that she was carrying, that may he become and
ardent devotee of the Lord. Through Kayadhu a gem of a child, Prahlad was
born. Prahladji, had been absorbing the divine tales of the Lord while in the
womb, which he later shared with his classmates in school in a very
extraordinary manner; You can read about this in Srimad Bhagwat Chapter
6, Skanda 7
Therefore all mothers share with your pregnant daughters and
daughterinlaws such divine legends of the Lord. Teach them and show
them beautiful divine pictures of the Lord and according to your affordability
feed them pure cow's milk and "ghee" (butter), rice, wheat, "moong" lentil,
sugar etc. pure, "sattvik" foods. Red chillies, mustard etc should be
avoided. Do not feed them sweets made out of "baajari" millets and spicy,
pungent foods, bitter tasting foods; because the foods that are eaten by
pregnant women, these foods have a great influence and will most certainly
falls on the unborn child. With these kinds of foods, the unborn child in
the womb experiences a burning sensation, and in his nature there is
irritability and many other kinds of flaws. While pregnant, mothers feel a
strong urge and think about eating various kinds of foods, whereby they are
even capable of eating "multaani mitti" (a particular kind of mud, white chalk),
etc. Therefore older mothers, must take extra precaution and complete care
of pregnant daughters and daughterinlaws, and according to their liking and
your affordability, feed them the best of best pure foods.
By doing so, in their mind, intellect, memory there is a joyous feeling.
This happy and joyful feeling will leave good impressions and sanctification

on the unborn child. An extraordinary point is that the sisters should want
that they remember the Lord at all times. "The Lord is residing in my heart,
there is immense grace on this unborn child and God's hands are on my
forehead and He is protecting us" Such sentiments must always be in their
inner being, and she must continue to see the grace of God on them both.
With such sentiments one will surely become pure and simultaneously the
unborn child too by God's grace receives the necessary protection.
In Srimad Bhagwat, King Parikshit said

Meaning This body of mine was destroyed by the weapon of
Ashvatthaama; this was the only progeny in the KauravaPandava lineage;
My mother Uttara went to take refuge in the Lord and the Lord entered the
womb of the mother, and with His "chakra" in hand, protected me.
This occasion went like this In the war of the Mahabharat, by causing
the victory of the Pandavas, the all knowing Lord Krishna was preparing to go
to Dwaarka. At that time, the pregnant Uttara as if being devoured by fire and
surrounded on all sides with the blazing heat, came crying and said to Lord

"O' Lord! Let this fire of the weapon burn me to ashes, but please let it
not hurt my unborn child by destroying him."
Then God by His divine powers entered the womb of Uttara and
protected the unborn child. Let the pregnant mothers remember this point
and at all times have the sentiments that through this womb may a loving
devotee of the Lord be born. Not only that but undoubtedly God Himself
comes into my womb.
Meera did not have a child, but she only accepted the Lord as her
beloved and attained God. In this way all mothers and sister have a feeling
that God is my very own. Accept the most loving and natural of all
relationships with Him. Accept God as your husband, your son, your father,
whatever you desire accept Him in that manner; because is there anything
else besides God? It is God alone that is in all these names and forms. Just
as at the time of "vatsaharan" when Brahmaji hid all the cows etc., God
revealed His divine play, His manifestation to Brahmaji.

nature, qualities, name, form and state whatever it was, the manner in which
they used to eat and drink, and move around exactly in that very same forms
God manifested Himself. At that time as if this entire universe is God's
manifestation" this spoken words of Ved as if in incarnate form revealed
itself."
A wife of a Brahmin living in Janakpur mother of Bhaktraj
Paramhansa mama Prayaagdasji used to consider Sitaji as her loving
daughter and Lord Shri Ram as the soninlaw. Similarly mothers and sisters
can also consider the Lord as their soninlaw and can accept the most loving
of all relationships that one likes with the Lord. Even an ordinary policeman,
due to being a dutiful government employee considers himself to be great,
then he who takes the support of the Almighty, All pervading, the wellwisher
of all, how very great he can become! The support of the world and its
relationship is impermanent, false and the kind to increase his pride; however
the support of the Lord and relationship is natural, innate and permanent. It
is the kind that makes him appear free of pride and with divine qualities.
Whether someone believes this or not, God is ours only.
All mothers and sisters at all times must do "japa" (divine name
recitation) of the Lord, meditate on the form of God, remember the divine
tales of the Lord. "Bharatiya" Mothers (born in India ), on waking up every
morning, sing the glories of the Lord (kirtan), sing the divine tales of the Lord.
While grinding wheat etc, while churning butter, the children used to go and
lie down in the mother's lap. They used to listen to the Lord's divine tales and
the singing of His glories. By doing so it would have a very good effect on the
child. There was a saint, a very distinguished one, whose mother used to do

O’ Lord ! O’ My Lord ! May I never forget You !
these things and he would cozily sit in her lap. The mother would share the
glories of the Lord, which had an immense influence on him.
Therefore mothers and sisters pay attention to this point, hold on to it
and abide by it. All of mankind have equal rights to the points that are shared
in satsang; whoever wishes to listen, they have special rights.
Ram gadi choude padi, sab koyi khelo aaye |
Gaavaa nahin hai santdas, jeete so le jaaye ||
These talks are not difficult; because we are God's, and God is ours,
therefore we are neither small, nor unhappy, nor suffering. Those who
depend on outside things are the worst of all poverty stricken
Ko vaa daridro hi vishaaltrushna |
(Shankaracharyakrut prashnotteri)
The outside kingdom is not a very big thing; because when the eyes are
shut at the end of the day (in sleep) nothing remains.
Sameelane nayanayorn hi kinchidasti
(Bhartuharikrt Vairaagyashatak)
Therefore have sentiments of the highest level, as God's relationship is
the only great thing and it have been evident from time immemorial.
When a child is born, one must definitely perform all the rites and
teachings as prescribed in the four Vedas including teaching of the Vedas to

that child. Also singing the glories of the Lord's Name, listening to His divine
legends and reciting His Divine Name should also be practiced. The essential
naming ceremonies (at the time of giving the child a name) should take place.
The child's name should be based on the alphabet as per the astrological
sign and should be associated with God; like Govindlal, Ramchandra,
HariKrishna; and if it is a daughter then names should be like Ganga,
Yamuna, Sharada, Saraswati, Gayatri etc.
It is a very sad things that mothers and guardians of future Bharatiya
children are likely to be a bad influence on the child. Very often, they are
conducting themselves very poorly and behaving entirely badly. As such the
mothers and guardian do not have such a bad intention or aim, however, out
of ignorance and under the influence of one's nature, pregnant sisters and
guardians are engaging in entertainment and reading fictional stories and
novels and are looking at censured photos and movies. They are going to the
clubs and impure places at night, eating impure food and drinks, as well.
Many menwomen are wearing indecent clothes and makeup and
shamelessly dancing, singing, jumping and joking around. On children's
birthdays too, they celebrate according to the western ways, uselessly
consuming sinful foods and entertainment.
Nowadays people have begun to have their children call them with
improper words like daddy, pappa, mummy etc. Instead one should begin the
use of words such as Bapuji, Mataji, Maa etc.
Mothers, sisters and brothers do not assume the children to be too
young and ignorant. "he is young, he is only a few days and months old, he is
www.swamiramsukhdasji.net
13
O’ Lord ! O’ My Lord ! May I never forget You !
not knowing" etc. By understanding the child to be too young, do not do any
sort of improper actions or gestures in front of the child. As such all our lives,
at all times we must behave and conduct ourselves in a pure manner, even
more in front of children. Essentially, one should be very pure and must
conduct one's self in a divine, dignified manner. Therefore let your conduct be
exemplary, let there never be that sentiment within the children that what is
this male and female? As children, we used to ask each other, where have
you come from? At that time we used to say "we have been showered from
Ramji" There was so much purity within, such pure sentiments. A small child
may not understand everything, however surely hidden and subtle
impressions will form in him with utmost certainty.
Motherfather should want that they love the child, and even in playing
and coaxing do not tell a lie. Always tell the truth, but do so lovingly. I have
heard a story. There was a child of the "vaishya" class, who one day went to
his father's shop. His father was counting the money for the day (from the
cash register). The child sneaked in and took five rupees bill and hid it. The
tally was five rupees short. The father thought, no one has come from outside
to this cash register, what could have happened? He asked the child whether
he had the money? The son said "Bucchi took it away." The child was
scolded at which time he said, why are you scolding me? You had brought
two mangoes the other day, and when I saw them, I took one mango away.
And when I asked for the second mango, then Mataji lifted her hands and
said "Bucchi took away the mango" and she hid the mango in her lap. At that
very same time the milk began to boil and overflow, and so she quickly got up
and the mango fell from her lap on me. This talk about Bucchi was false and it
came in front of me. This incident had an influence on me that similarly
www.swamiramsukhdasji.net
14
O’ Lord ! O’ My Lord ! May I never forget You !
Bucchi also takes away money.
Therefore from this incident one must learn that considering the child to
be too young, not knowing, or without understanding, do not lie to him. Let no
impure impressions fall on him. Let there never be any bad words heard from
your mouth. Children are your real inheritance, your future world. They are
the support that will uphold the Country. Whatever you say in front of children
or you don't say, its impressions will irrevocably fall on them. Just as a potter
whatever shape he molds the clay into, it becomes that shape, but once the
pot is heated in a kiln, thereafter the shape cannot be changed. This example
is for the child in the womb. For the smaller children the example is one of
new pot, in which you fill water for the first time and write something on it with
a coal chalk, then that which is written will get imprinted there for ever.
Yannave bhaajane lagnah sanskaro naanyathaa bhavet |
The purport is that from the womb to about 45 years of age definite
impressions that are long lasting and stable form on a child; therefore it is
proper for mothers and fathers etc. to live within limits and boundaries and in
a civilized manner. Let there be no form of improper conduct or behavior.
Nowadays even among little children you see a deprivation in their character,
what is the reason for this? Very bad impressions of poor behavior and
conduct of the mother, father, brother, brotherinlaw fall on the children.
A few years back children 810 years of age used to roam around
without clothes. But nowadays ever children of 23 years of age cannot be
left without clothes. Mothers while playing with little children says "we will
www.swamiramsukhdasji.net
15
O’ Lord ! O’ My Lord ! May I never forget You !
get you a wife, or a wife with only one eye if you roam around in the nude"
Such words in and off themselves can do great harm to a child. There are
many points to share. Many of you that are living in the householder life also
know some of these things.
Therefore have your eyes on seeing to it that your children become
good. If your character is good, then naturally there will be good impressions
on the child. In this the important point is that taking the support of the
Lotus Feet of the Lord, having a feeling of oneness (my very own) with the
Lord, having trust and faith in the Lord and reciting His Divine Name.
Serving the Lord, being devoted to the Lord, being free of pride, steadfast,
filled with enthusiasm, and forgiving etc. such divine qualities and conduct
should be adopted. Most importantly, there must be that faith that "God is
mine and I am God's" and His grace it on me, due to which such divine
qualities, behavior etc. have come upon me and continue to flow towards
me."
Why is it that Meera has been considered so very great? She had
implicit faith "Mere toh Giridhar Gopal, Doosero na Koyi" Therefore let
there be a sense of mine only on the divine Lotus Feet of the Lord. Have
faith, that besides God no one else is mine. From the divine nectar filled
flowing "Ganga," words of Satsang, may you with faith take some "Gangajal"
(the "divine water of Ganga ). Having faith in the Lord, and on leaving faith in
the temporary body and this world, life will be a success. Let us all become
deserving of the Lord's trust, then others will also have trust in us. It is God's
nature

was offered to the Lord.

the Lord and use it considering it to be a propitiatory offering. Use pure
foods, money that is pure (not earned by inappropriate means), pure
utensils for the Lord. Pure foods prepared with much purity, specifically for
the Lord, while remembering the Lord and are offered to Him as a sacrifice,
and while partaking in that food, with every morsel of food placed in the
mouth, one must remember the Lord and consider the food to be a gift from
the Lord. By doing so, the person eating will not be accused of the sins
associated with the food. It has also been said
Kawale kavale kurvan ramnaamaanukirtanam |

When the food is pure, the mind becomes pure. When one gains

being wasted away, in that much time, if with great alertness and caution one
engages in "Bhajan" (worship and remembrance), then lot of "Bhajan" is
possible. And if the work / business is not understood to be our own work
etc., and accepted as being God's work, then naturally, at all times "bhajan,"
will be taking place. Therefore, however, and which ever way God must be

O’ Lord ! O’ My Lord ! May I never forget You !
If you desire nothing at all, then do God's "Bhajan" i.e. worship,
adoration, and remembrance. If you desire everything then do God's
"Bhajan" and if you desire liberation, then do God's bhajan. Bhajan is
"Sanjivani booti" (lifegiving herb/medicinal plant), it is the best thing ever! It
is only due to not paying attention to it, that people are experiencing a void
and are suffering. Leaving God aside, and expecting from the world,
thinking that they will benefit us, thinking that this person will do something for
us etc. He who himself is lacking in many things, he who himself is
perishable, destructible and unhappy, how will he make everything right for
us?

Gita, Lord Krishna has said
Apichet suduraachaaro bhajate maamananyabhaak |
Saadhureva samantavyah samagvyavasito hi saha ||
(Gita 9/30)
Meaning Even if the vilest sinner worships Me with exclusive

Ramcharitmanas also Lord Shri Rama also gives His message to His
subjects saying
Kahahu Bhagati path kavan prayaasaa |
Jog na makh japa tapa upavaasaa ||
In this there is no need for practice of Yoga, nor is there any other
difficulty. In this the main objective is that God likes only those that are
honest, straightforward in nature.
Saral svabhaav na man kutilaayi |
Jathaa laabh santosh sadaayi ||
Therefore whatever the Lord gives, whatever family he places us in,
whatever situation or circumstances he places us in, in that very state accept
it as God's grace. Do not look anywhere else.
More daas kahaayi nar aasaa |
Karayi tou kahahu kahaa biswaasaa ||
If after becoming God's, if one looks at others then how is there faith
and trust in God! Therefore after taking the support of the Lord's Lotus feet,
become free of worries and fearless. By God's grace, Lord's loving devotees
will be born. We too are by God's grace, His very own loving ones. We
have to only listen and share his talks. After doing "bhajan" what will be our
condition let there be no worry about that at all. We are His, we are
dependent on Him alone.
