Day 3: The Sarova Stanley, Nairobi (Wed, 23 September)

Day Itinerary

This morning after a hearty leisurely breakfast, our guide driver will pick you from the hotel for Nairobi Excursions.

Drive to Daphne Sheldricks orphanage. This orphanage is opened only one hour a day from 1100Hrs to 1200Hrs. It is

located 8 Kilometres drive from the city centre and it is set in the Nairobi National Park. The orphanage gives you a

rare opportunity to come close to baby elephants. The ages vary from a few months to 3 years. Each orphaned

elephant is assigned its own keeper, who acts as a replacement mother and will stay with the elephant until it is re-

introduced into the wild. The keeper as well gives a talk about the elephants, where they came from, how they are

getting on, and how some of the previous orphans are progressing.

You will then drive to the Karen Blixen Museum with lunch at Karen Blixen Coffee Garden. This museum was the

home of the Danish renowned writer – Karen Blixen, also known by her pen name as Isak Dinesen. The house was

her residence between 1914 to 1931. Most of the household items that Karen used are still intact in the house.

Surrounding the house is some nicely, natured coffee gardens that lady Karen grew. In the house she has a small

library, offering some of Karen’s writings among other collections.

This will be followed by a visit to Kazuri Beads and Pottery Centre. This is a popular place for many guests who have

just a few hours to spend seeing the sights of Nairobi. Kazuri beads produce brightly-colored, hand-made ceramic

jewellery which are sold all over the world.

Tonight’s dinner is a special event with our host, The Manji Family who will entertain you over drinks and dinner at

their family home. Thereafter return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Founded in 1977 by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick D.B.E, in honour of the memory of her late husband, famous

naturalist and founding Warden of Tsavo East National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, the DSWT claims a

rich and deeply rooted family history in wildlife and conservation. Born from one family’s passion for Kenya and it's

wilderness, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation

program in the world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations for wildlife and habitat protection in East

Africa.

To date the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has successfully hand-raised over 244 infant elephants and has accomplished its

long-term conservation priority by effectively reintegrating orphans back into the wild herds of Tsavo, claiming many

healthy wild-born calves from former-orphaned elephants raised in care.

Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum was once the home of the Danish author Karen Blixen. The renowned author made

famous by the release of the Oscar winning movie ‘Out of Africa’, based on Karen’s autobiography of the same title.

The museum displays many pieces of the author's furniture and has a splendid view of the Ngong Hills, immortalized

in Karen Blixen's opening line, "I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills."

The Karen Blixen Museum is open to the public every day, with guided tours on offer. The museum shop features

handicrafts, posters, postcards, the movie ‘Out of Africa’, as well as books and other Kenyan souvenirs.

Tamambo Karen Blixen Coffee Garden

Tamambo Karen Blixen Coffee Garden is located in a beautiful peaceful setting on Karen Road, near the Karen Blixen

Museum, about half a mile from the Karen Golf and Country Club. The menu is a fusion of Tamarind and Tamambo

dishes. Diners have a fine choice of different areas for lunch or dinner. There is the cosy and indoor restaurant with

adjacent terrace and garden for a la carte dining. There are also a variety of functions areas such as the Grand

Marquee Sultan style tent, available for 'royal style' weddings, dinners, and conferences. The Grogan House is a

lovely space for private dinners and exclusive functions. The restaurant and function areas are situated in the midst

of one of the largest and oldest formal gardens in Kenya and include huge jacaranda, candelabra cactus, bottle brush

and other trees and over 200 species of blooming flower varieties. For many Karen residents, the bar which opens

out to a lounge is a popular place to meet and mingle and with delicious Tamambo cocktails, bar snacks, and satellite

TV to catch all the sporting events, it has become a popular meeting place in Karen.

Giraffe Centre

The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Kenya (A.F.E.W. Kenya) also known as the Giraffe Centre is a non-

governmental, non-profit making organization, which was founded by Betty and Jock Leslie-Melville in 1979. This

was in a bid to save the endangered Rothschild Giraffe, which had lost its natural habitat in Western Kenya to

agriculture and there were only 130 left in the wild. Funds were raised and 4 herds of the Rothschild giraffes were

moved to 4 parks namely Lake Nakuru National Park, Mwea Game Reserve, Ruma National Park and Nasalot Game

Reserve.

Kazuri Beads

Kazuri, which means ‘small and beautiful’ in Swahili, began in 1975 as a tiny workshop experimenting on making

handmade beads. The factory is located in what used to be part of the Karen Blixen Estate (of the Academy Award

winning film Out of Africa).

Day Itinerary

A hearty early morning breakfast then we depart for the Masai Mara National Reserve, offering wonderful scenery

and plenty of game. Arrive to a very warm welcome for lunch, some leisure. This afternoon is the moment we have

been longing for – we depart on an exciting game viewing drive. The Rolling plains and grasslands, stretching far into

bird and wildlife species in this game reserve….. For a long time, Mara Game Reserve has stubbed her authority as

the ‘granary’ of wildlife in Kenya. We return back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

The Masai Mara together with Tanzania’s Serengeti form Africa’s most famous wildlife park, the Masai Mara

National Reserve. The image of acacia trees dotting endless grass plains epitomises Africa for many, then add a

Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The undeniable highlight of

the Masai Mara National Reserve is undoubtedly the annual wildebeest migration traversing the vast plains of the

Serengeti and the Masai Mara. It is known as the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with

more than a million animals following the rains. Large prides of lions, elephants, giraffes, gazelles and eland can also

be spotted in the reserve. Aside from horse riding safaris and traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the

Mara plains has become almost essential.

Overnight: Tipilikwani Mara Camp View iBrochure

This uniquely situated luxury camp on the banks of the Talek River overlooks the mottled plains of the Maasai Mara,

where vast herds of wildlife co-exist with the colourful Maasai people between June and October the Maasai Mara

plays host to one of the most spectacular wildlife shows on earth the great annual migration of over a million

wildebeest and zebra as they enter the Mara ecosystem from Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania. Tipilikwani's tents

enjoy river frontage and are decorated with warm, rich Maasai colours.

The family tents have a stand alone bath tub in addition to showers. Excellent food, personalised service and

traditional Kenyan hospitality further compliment the prime location.

Game drives offer the unforgettable opportunity to enjoy the diversity of animals and birds living permanently in the

Maasai Mara, as well as many migratory species. Guests can also learn more about the Maasai people, proud

pastoralists and warriors, many of whom still retain their traditional nomadic lifestyle.

return back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY: Balloon Safari over the Mara plains followed by a champagne breakfast or visit a traditional

Masai Manyatta (off the beaten track) and experience the culture of this world famous community. The Masai

great wildlife refuges. The Serengeti ecosystem supports the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in

Africa, including more than three million large mammals. We arrive at our lodge for check-in, dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge, Karatu

(Tue, 29 September)

Day Itinerary

After breakfast, we depart to Ngorongoro. We stop at the Oldupai Gorge, one of the most important prehistoric sites

in the world to learn on human evolution. We will enjoy an on-site talk on the interpretation of the gorge by the

resident guide.

We arrive at our crater rim lodge to a warm welcome, check-in then lunch. This afternoon we relax and from our

lodge enjoy the breath-taking spectacular views of the crater below. Ngorongoro Crater has the largest unbroken

caldera in the world. It has been described as one of the great natural wonders of the world. Eight million years ago,

the Ngorongoro Crater was an active volcano but its cone collapsed, forming the crater that is 610 meters deep, 20

kilometres in diameter, and covers an area of 311 sq. km. Spectacular as it is, the crater accounts for just a tenth of

the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater is home to many species of wild game and birds. With the exception

of impala and topi (due to fierce competition with the wildebeest) and the giraffe (because there is not much to eat

at tree level), almost every species of African plains mammal lives in the crater, including the endangered black

rhino, and the densest population of predators in Africa. The birdlife, which includes the flamingo, is mainly

seasonal, and is also affected by the ratio of soda to fresh water in Lake Magadi on the crater floor. Dinner and

overnight at crater lodge.

NOTE: Warm jacket/cardigan is highly recommended.

Travellers heading for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater will inevitably pass through the town of Karatu in the

green hills of Tanzania’s northern highlands. Presided over by the towering Ol Deani Volcano, this small, colourful

town serves as a popular overnight stop for visitors exploring the area’s many game parks. The town offers a variety

of activities including browsing the bustling marketplace, sampling beer at a local brewery, visiting a traditional

Iraqw homestead, or taking a guided walk through the Ngorongoro Forest in search of waterfalls and elephants

caves. Whether you are looking for cultural tours, hiking and biking opportunities, a chance to enjoy an authentic

rural Tanzania experience, or simply a break between safari game drives, this underrated town has plenty to offer.

the way to Lake Eyasi and Lake Manyara.

is accessed over a pond and one's first impression is the grand central hallway with wooden trusses looking out over

the fireplace, infinity pool and out to Mount O'ldeani, which is part of the caldera of the Ngorongoro crater, only 12

Ngorongoro Region

Bordering Kenya to the north, the Ngorongoro Region is known for its abundance of beautiful natural features. It

encompasses the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the spectacular Ngorongoro

Crater, and the active Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. Visitors can look forward to a variety of activities such as viewing

Day 10: Ngorongoro Oldeani Mountain Lodge, Karatu

(Wed, 30 September)

Day Itinerary

After breakfast descend some 610 metres into the crater, which is home to an abundance of wildlife and a

photogenic paradise, for a full day of game-viewing drive with a picnic lunch. Ngorongoro Crater teams with an

abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor. Unmatched for its natural variety & breath-taking

beauty, there are few places on earth where such a tremendous diversity of landscapes exist inside a region this size.

Apart from its wildlife riches, the crater is also of great archaeological importance, with the remains of some of

mankind’s earliest ancestors discovered in the area.

Return late afternoon to your lodge. Enjoy dinner and overnight.
