Rise in employment but wages stagnanUNEMPLOYMENT has fallento its lowest rate since late2008 dropping to 6.2 per centfor May to July 2014, figuresfrom the Office For NationalStatistics show.

The number of people outof work fell by 146,000 to 2.02million over the three months,while employment grew by74,000.

People claiming JobseekersAllowance dropped below onemillion (966,500) in August forthe first time in six years.

Figures also showed a reduc-tion in the youth unemploy-ment rate to 16.6 per cent downfrom 18.5 per cent in the threemonths before.

However, pay growth re-mained below inflation risingby just 0.6 per cent (includingbonuses) compared with a yearearlier, while pay excludingbonuses rose by 0.7 per cent.

Reacting to the unemploy-ment figures FSB Wales PolicyChair Janet Jones said: Weare becoming increasingly

concerned at the rising tide ofeconomic inactivity revealedby these latest unemploymentfigures.

There are 39,000 fewer peo-ple in Wales who are economi-cally active than there wereat the same point last year.Among working age womenthe economic inactivity ratehas now climbed to more than30 per cent.

Worryingly, Wales has hadthe largest decrease in theemployment rate of any nation

and region of the UK in thepast quarter according to thesefigures.

Given this data WelshGovernment needs to be usingevery tool at its disposal to fos-ter job creation. We fear thatcuts to its successful YoungRecruits Programme appren-ticeship scheme at this crucialtime will only exacerbate theproblems of job crea-tion highlighted in thesefigures.

CIPD chief economist

Mark Beatson said: Figuresvary from month to month butemployment has continued togrow, perhaps not as quicklyas in the last three or fourquarters, but still by enoughto keep pace with a growingpopulation and deliver a bigreduction in unemployment.Vacancies continue to rise andthis is in line with our recruit-ment intentions survey, whichshows that employers expect tocarry on recruiting.

However, the new figures

also show that pay growthremains very subdued and wellbelow all measures of priceinflation, so the improvementsin productivity and pay thatwe are all looking for are stillnot in sight. Employers needto take advantage of the cur-rently favourable recruitmentclimate to invest in upskillingtheir business and its people.

David Kern, chief economistat the British Chambers ofCommerce, said: The realsuccess story is the continuedrapid fall in youth unemploy-ment however, it is importantto note that the figure is stillabove the national average.We are also concerned that therise in employment figuresin the past three months sawthe smallest increase since Q22013.

Annual wage increasesremain well below 1 per cent

which is much lower than therate of inflation. This reinforc-es our belief that the MonetaryPolicy Committee must delayraising interest rates until wellinto 2015.

We must give businessesa period of stability withlow interest rates, if we areto strengthen the economicrecovery.
