2.5 billion people (35% of the global population) live without adequate sanitation facilities.

1,800 children die every day from unsafe water, lack of basic sanitation and poor hygiene. Many adults suffer from waterborne disease and ill health, making them less economically productive and straining already weak health systems.

Women and girls who trek miles for drinking water miss out on productive work or school education.

For those children who do attend school, about 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related illness.

Lack of investment in sanitation and water costs countries in Asia and Africa 2–6% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) annually.

SANITATION AND WATER: GOOD FOR PEOPLE, GOOD FOR ECONOMIES

With access to sanitation and clean water, people can live healthier and more productive lives and are more likely to move out of poverty.

SWA HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE THE LIVES OF THE WORLD’S POOREST PEOPLE BY HARNESSING POLITICAL WILL AND ENSURING ACTION ON SANITATION AND WATER FOR ALL.

Possible economic gains from universal sanitation and water are an estimated US$170 billion per year.

800 million people still do not have access to safe drinking water.

For every dollar spent on sanitation and water, there is a five-dollar return.

Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) is a global partnership of governments, donors, civil society organizations and other development partners working together to coordinate high-level action, improve accountability and use scarce resources more effectively. Over 90 partners are committed to achieving universal access to clean water and adequate sanitation. Through global coordination, SWA partners aim to avoid the fragmentation that impeded previous efforts. Governments and development agencies are better able to engage, commit and take coordinated action to ensure sanitation and water for all. Developing country governments are driving SWA. They demonstrate dedicated political will and leadership in implementing national plans to deliver sanitation and water to their populations. Donors and development partners support these efforts, while civil society organizations hold powerful institutions accountable for their commitments and action.

UNITING FOR CHANGE

SWA’S FOCUS

Partners collaborate globally, regionally and nationally on three priority actions:

• Prioritize political leadership to reverse the neglect of sanitation and water

• Promote a strong evidence base that supports good decision making

• Strengthen national plans and target investments so that money is spent where it is most needed.

Every two years, SWA convenes national and global decision-makers to discuss sanitation and water at the SWA High Level Meeting. The meeting is significant as Ministers of Finance agree to address the fundamental bottlenecks holding back progress and to act on international aid effectiveness principles. This includes aligning and harmonizing efforts to support national plans on sanitation and water so that access is sustainable. At the 2012 SWA High Level Meeting, partners collectively made over 400 commitments and will now hold each other accountable for their actions.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Through SWA, governments and development partners are able to increase budgets, harmonize their efforts and accelerate progress.

• At the 2012 SWA High Level Meeting, 35 developing countries committed to increase access to sanitation facilities for 307 million new users and water services to 224 million new users. Donors committed to increase access to an additional 40 million new users.

• Developing countries are strengthening their sanitation and water-related national plans, increasing budgets and expanding services.

• SWA is strengthening accountability for results by reporting annually on the progress governments and donors have made against their commitments.
