1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 SCOPE
This document represents the System Release Note of the product SRAL XD developed by Nokia Siemens
Networks SpA.
1.2 APPLICABILITY
The information contained in this document is applicable to Release SVR 3.10 SU1 of SRAL XD and to all
the organizations involved.
2 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
SRAL XD, the new line of point to point low capacity digital radio, is a member of NSN’s extensive
telecommunication product portfolio.
Applications
SRAL XD line is primarily designed for urban networks but is also suitable in regional networks meeting all
the requirements of access and trunk applications.
Compelling Features
Based on network’s specific needs, the operator can select either higher spectrum efficiency or higher system
gain and hop lengths.
All the parameter can be SW selected locally or remotely in order to adapt the HW platform to each single
link characteristics in terms of available RF channel, payload, usable bandwidth and hop length.
SRAL XD flexibility and versatility greatly improve all the upgrading procedures and configuration change.
A terminal can be easily relocated without any HW modification simply re-shaping its peculiar parameters
on the new link requirement.Another important strong advantage is represented by the extreme compactness of SRAL XD Indoor Unit. A
single 44 mm high unit is necessary to implement any protected or unprotected terminal configurations.
System Architecture
The Split Configuration has been kept, even though both the IDU and the ODU have been redesigned in
order to reduce their mechanical dimensions.
In order to save room for the indoor installation, the dimensions of the IDU have been dramatically reduced,
moving the mo/modulation section to the ODU. As result the IDU able to provide protect configuration is
only 1U high.
In spite of this change the dimensions of the ODU have been reduced as well by adopting the state of the art
technologyThe 1U High Plug In Version adopts a modular architecture.
The basic configuration (1+0) consist of a controller, an access card and a base-band card; in order to arrange
protected/add drop repeater configuration, an additional base-band card has to be added in the same shelf.
The IDU Plug-in, being independent from modulation format, will manage either High or Normal density.

Outdoor Units
State of art RF technology has been the baseline for SRAL XD ODU’s development completely matching all
the technical constraints introduced by the high modulation scheme adopted for the HD version: system
linearity and synthesizer phase noise.
Two different outdoor units are part of SRAL XD suite:
► Normal Density ODU
Provides only normal density channel arrangement
(4 CPM Modulation Format) and able to assure a complete compatibility through the entire SRA L productLINE
► High Density/High Performance ODU:
Supports both normal and high density modulation schemes (4 QAM, 16 TCM Modulation Format) assuring
a SW selectable adaptation of SRAL XD terminals to the available bandwidth.

3 SUPPORTED FUNCTIONALITIES
SVR 3.10.4
Main topics for SVR 3.10 with respect to SVR 3.9 are the following:
- Management of new “16xE1 + Ethernet” Access unit, supporting 16 E1 lines, 3 10/100Base-T and
one Gigabit Ethernet interfaces (1000 Base T/ SX) on the Tributary side.
- Full support of ND2 ODU, a new hardware version of ND ODU slave type
- Boost function for 16-TCM
- Temporized Commands procedure to support software/firmware upgradeIn addition, SVR 3.10 SU1-specific topics (release 3.10.4) are:
- Solution of the “Sleeping ODU” issue for ODU ND 13 GHz and 15 GHz;
- Bugfixing related to Dynamic Modulation and ATPC booster features for ODU HDe 13 GHz and 15
GHz;
- Update of the 16xE1 + Eth Access FPGA.

6 IDU BOOT SW UPGRADE PROCEDURE
IDU BOOT SW upgrader code 559-014/98 contains the file “application.pec”. To upgrade the IDU
BOOT SW to version 2.2:
1. download via FTP the file “application.pec” on stand-by bank
2. switch the banks: the IDU resets and boots with the new BOOT SW 2.2
Note that:
• embedded software on stand-by bank is cleared by IDU BOOT SW upgrader and automatically
replaced with the embedded software contained into the active bank;
• no traffic payload is lost during upgrader procedure;
• do not turn off/on the radio unit during upgrade procedure.
7 REMOTE UPGRADE 3.4 3.5/3.6/3.7.1/3.8/3.9/3.10 GUIDE-LINES IN SRAL
NETWORKS
One of the feature that SVR 3.5/3.6/3.7/3.8/3.9/3.10 introduce is a new controller card with code 634-
001/74 or /83. These cards provide the V-BUS interface RS-485 compatible with the SRAL equipment.
This interface leads to have best integration into the SRAL network already implemented without use F-
interface solutions. The new controller is compatible with the SVR 3.4 but to manage the new V-BUS
interface the SVR 3.5/3.6/3.7/3.8/3.9/3.10 is required.
In case of interworking with SRAL via F interface, a remote upgrading from SVR 3.4 to SVR
3.5/3.6/3.7/3.8/3.9/3.10 was defined. It’s important to remind that the software upgrading can be
performed from remote NMS Server only if:
• the hardware swapping of controller card has been already performed
• the connections has been made cabling both F and V-BUS cables.
Remote upgrade guide-lines:
1. download via FTP the sw 3.5/3.6/3.7/3.8/3.9/3.10 on the stand-by bank of the NE
2. perform the bank switch
3. wait until the NE is up on the NMS map
4. copy main bank software to stand-by bank
5. enable V-BUS interface
6. wait until the NE is up on the NMS map
7. change the IP address (IP SRAL + 1) of the SRAL XD with a new one available ( the new IP
address must belong to same subnet of SRAL equipment and must be in compliance with the IP
addressing network planning )8. wait until the NE is up on the NMS map
9. change the setting of F interface from IP to IP SRAL disable
10. wait until the NE is up on the NMS map
The entire remote upgrade requires 4 controller resets conresponding to the steps (2), (5), (7) and (9) of
the above procedure.

Known issues for SVR 3.10 SU1:
• Limitation for the use of the ATPC Booster feature in conjuction with Dynamic Modulation and
ATPC Operation for ODU HDe 15 GHz and 13 GHz: after the SVR upgrade of the NE, the P_Tx
Boost and the Boost alarm display will not work when the first deep fading event occurs on the radio
link. After a first stimulation of the Dynamic Modulation feature (jump of modulation from
Enhanced Mode to Normal and viceversa due to fading wells), the ATPC Boost will work properly.
Such behaviour cannot be further improved.
The following REAs are planned to be solved in SVR 3.10 SU2 (to be scheduled). They all refer to IDU
Plug-in Data Access 8xE1 + Ethernet version.

10 HINTS ON PROCEDURES
This paragraph describes some problems that are not limitations of the product as such, however, they should
be mentioned to smooth Maintenance and NMS Operations.
• BB/Unit Replacement
In case of subunits hardware faults of BaseBand 16xE1, it’s recommended to temporary disable Dynamic
Modulation on both terminals of the radio hop before starting maintenance procedures.
This approach is suggested in order to speed up traffic recovery and/or alarms restore.
• Controller reset with Local and Remote Loopbacks
When, for maintenance purposes, a local or remote loopback on E1 tributary is applied with Dynamic
Modulation enabled, it’s then preferable not to execute a controller reset (or operations that implies a controller
reset). In fact, after controller restart, the real status of loopbacks may not be properly displayed on LCT/NV.
Manual disabling of local/remote loopbacks is therefore recommended at the end of maintenance operations.
• Controller Subunit Fault with Dynamic Modulation enabled
Under the condition:
o Dynamic Modulation Enabled
o Hardware failure affecting controller subunit
management channel (R-channel) goes down causing possible malfunctions of Dynamic Modulation. In this
case, it’s suggested to disable Dynamic Modulation on the remote station.
• ODU replacement with dynamic modulation enabled
It is strongly recommended to temporarily disable Dynamic Modulation when replacing a faulty Outdoor Unit
or at the first installation as well. In case of ODU parameters loss after ODU replacement Memory key has to
be substituted with a new one if Dynamic Modulation was enabled.
• Memory key replacement with spare memory key coming from a system which had dynamic
modulation enabled
When a Memory key is extracted from a IDU plug-in 16xE1 with Dynamic Modulation enabled, that Memory
key can not be reused in any other SRAL XD IDU plug-in where Dynamic Modulation is not supported (i.e.
IDU 32xE1) or not enabled. Otherwise manual change of bit rate / modulation format via LCT can not be
performed.
• Dynamic Modulation and boost functionalitiies are available for RF bands: 13 / 15 / 18 / 23 / 26 / 28 / 32
/ 38 GHz and not for RF bands below 13 GHz.
• Traffic load balancing between different ports in SRAL XD 3.10 indoor unit When the equipment is configured with GbEth Access Card and no prorities are selected (port / 802.1x /
VLAN), the output on different physical LAN ports may be unbalanced. Such behavior is present with both
10Mb/s and 100Mb/s interfaces, but it is not in conflict with internal design specifications. No corrective actions can be done at the moment to change that performance.
• V-BUS and LAN interfaces are mutually exclusive.
• Interworking with SRAL via F interface requires the rate setting to 19200 b/s on F interface.
• Connection with SRAL via F interface is a very slow connection (19,2Kb/s) and cannot be used to
manage more than 3 radio links.
• Interworking with SRAL via F interface in the same IP subnet requires the disabling of LAN and V-
BUS interfaces.
• Interworking with SRAL via F interface requires to upgrade the IDU BOOT software to version 2.0 or
greater.
