In ‘Overkill’, Alexis is casting her eye over thelatest draft of her dad’s new Nikki Heat novel andshe questions the introduction of a new character,a robbery detective called Schlemming, “He’scoming off a bit like a doofus,” she says, “I thinkyou should lose him.” “If only it was this easy,”Castle replies, using a red pen to eradicateSchlemming from Nikki’s life.

“Please tell me there’s been a murder otherwise I’llhave to continue writing,” Castle says in responseto Beckett’s phone call. His wish is granted. In awell-appointed apartment, the body of DamianWilder is found. Wilder is the wealthy founder of acompany that sells men’s grooming products. Hehas been shot once, although he appears to havetaken a while to die, with the perpetrator finishinghim off with a blow over the head.

Denning follows up one line of inquiry. Some rareand very valuable books were stolen from Wilder’sapartment and subsequently offered for sale onthe internet, by a book dealer, Lukas Canby, whohas a record that includes assaulting a fellowbidder when a book auction didn’t go his way.

Canby becomes the prime suspect, but Castledoesn’t want Denning’s hunch to be right andcomes up with a plan with Ryan and Esposito tonab the person he thinks is the murderer, “If thisworks. I’ll keep you guys in shave cream for a year.”

Who is right – Denning or Castle? Or are they bothreading from the wrong script? And which one ofthem shares a kiss with Beckett?

In ‘ADeadlyGame’, running for his life through thepark at night, a man sees a payphone and makes acall. “This is Blackbird. Identification?” says thevoice on the other end. “Designate 2-2-3. I amblown. I am blown… Where is the safe house?”says the caller. “Negative 2-2-3, you know therules,” says the voice. Tearing back through thepark, he is stopped in his tracks by a man with aflashlight, who brandishes a gun with a silencerand shoots the man dead.

The victim’s wallet provides no help to identify him– his gym membership is for a gym that doesn’texist and his company, Fastwater Global Services,are registered to a PO Box in the Cayman Islands.His hire car is found to contain an automaticweapon, five thousand euros and a pen, which self-destructs after it relays a message about thedetails of a meeting. “Well now we know why ourvictim doesn’t exist,” says Beckett, “he’s a spy.”

At the meeting point specified in the pen message,after making a fool of himself with the only singlewoman in the joint, Castle makes contact with aHans Brauer, who eventually cracks and tells thedetectives he is just taking part in a ‘spy-cation’, inwhich ordinary people get to live out their JamesBond-style fantasies.

Who had it in for the victim? How well does Castletake the news that Beckett and Denning are’together’? And does she agree with Castle thatthis should be the last case they work on?
