Suzuki ATV History
As in the case of many types of products, Suzuki has been an innovator with All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs).
Suzuki is “First on Four Wheels”
3
Introduction
In the early 1980’s most ATVs were known as All Terrain Cycles or “three wheeler”. To expand ATV ridership Suzuki created and brought the first four-wheel ATVs to market in 1983. Eventually that advance began the movement away from the controversial three-wheelers.
Always committed to innovation, and attentive to the needs and desires of riders, Suzuki has had a series of important firsts in the ATV market. The models on the following slides are an indication of Suzuki leadership in ATVs. 1983 QuadRunner 125 (LT125)
Introduction
Suzuki brought the first four-wheeled ATV to the sport with the release of the 1983 QuadRunner 125, 4 x 6. This original quad, with the designation LT125, positively surprised riders and dealers not only with its well-planted four-wheel chassis, but it featured a automatic clutch with five forward speeds plus reverse. The “4” in the sub-name stood for the four wheels, while the “6” represented the six speed transmission. Another innovation came in the following model year when the 1984 QuadRunner 50 (LT50) was announced. Youth ATVs became viable with the QuadRunner 50 as it was a stable platform for beginners with a sound engine, automatic transmission, and included safety features like a throttle limited and a remote tether so adults could control the action. Suzuki four-wheelers were now available for the whole family and today’s generation of ATV rider’s most likely got their start on a Suzuki QuadRunner 50. 1984 QuadRunner 50 (LT50)

1983 QuadRunner 125 (LT125)
Introduction
With the announcement of the 1987 QuadRunner 4WD (LT-4WD) Suzuki innovation now provided riders with terrain conquering capability never before available from a ATV. This four-wheeler, as it’s designation implied, had four-wheel drive. And that drive system allowed the rider to select 2WD or 4WD modes, plus it offered a front differential lock so the QuadRunner 4WD could crawl out of just about any situation. The rider could also route the power from the 246cm3 four-stroke engine through a sub-transmission that had both high and low ratios so the ATV was great on tight trails but could also get you quickly out to work on the far side of the ranch. Additionally, the QuadRunner 4WD was designed with a engine configuration and fuel tank location that resulted in a comfortable and low seat height. The path forward to the KINGQUAD legacy was becoming clear.

Suzuki ATV History
Introduction
The QuadRunner 4WD was a phenomenon as riders eagerly sought out this ATV for a variety of outdoor and agricultural uses. Suzuki then raised the standard of a utility ATV again with the introduction of the 1991 KINGQUAD. This new “King of the Quads” model employed many of the QuadRunner 4WD’s features but with increased capacity and capability. Suzuki increased the engine displacement from 246cm3 to 280cm3, added a oil cooler to control temperature when navigating rough terrain at slow speeds, and used larger wheels and tires to increase traction and riding comfort. Like the 4WD, the KINGQUAD used fully independent suspension on the front and rear of the ATV. 1991 KINGQUAD (LT-F4WDX)

Suzuki ATV History
Introduction
For the 2003 model year Suzuki revised some of its ATV models to take advantage of its new, Rome, Georgia manufacturing plant (see SMAC) and to drive awareness of its sports-utility line-up. Some of Suzuki’s sports-utility models adopted the names of famous mountains at the same time they got technical improvements. The air-oil cooled 400cm3 model, in both 2WD and 4WD versions was named the Eiger (per the famous mountain in Bernese Alps) and the larger, liquid-cooled 500cm3 4WD model was dubbed the Vinson (per the large mountain in the Antarctic). Both models became intermediate models to past and future KINGQUAD’s in both features and performance.
2002 EIGER (LT-A400/F)
2002 VINSON (LT-A500F)
SMAC: In February 2002 Suzuki Manufacturing of America Corporation (SMAC) began ATV production by building the all-new 400cm3 Eiger and 500cm3 Vinson ATVs. The plant’s location, in Rome, Georgia, USA, was selected for many factors including location in a key market, access to quality suppliers, and the ability to hire good associates from the community. Currently, SMAC builds the award winning KINGQUAD line of ATVs (including the new 2019 KINGQUAD 500AXi and KINGQUAD 750AXi models) for the North American and global markets. This demonstrates Suzuki's long term commitment to the all terrain vehicle (ATV) business and secures Suzuki's reputation as "First on Four Wheels”.

Suzuki ATV History
Introduction
With the 2003 Suzuki QuadSport Z400 Suzuki took advantage of it’s expertise in both the ATV and motorcycle worlds. This new machine combined a engine based on the proven DR-Z400E off-road motorcycle and an advanced electronic fuel injection system. The high performance 398cm3 4-stroke, liquid-cooled, DOHC single-cylinder powerplant runs through a smooth-shifting five speed transmission that also has a easy-to-use reverse system. The chassis is reminiscent of earlier QuadRacer and QuadSport designs with a long-travel double A-arm front suspension and single rear shock, aggressively-styled bodywork with high fenders, plus vents that route cooling air to the radiator. The QuadSport Z400’s balance of performance, ease of use and reliability makes it a favorite among sport ATV riders world-wide.

Suzuki ATV History
Introduction
The KINGQUAD name returned to Suzuki ATV line up with the 2005 KINGQUAD 700. Along with its revived name this new ATV brought a new liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine fed by a first and modern electronic fuel injection system. The KINGQUAD 700 FI 4x4 engine was canted forward at a 48-degree angle to help the ATV maintain optimum weight balance and efficient air-intake design. The 700’s chassis featured fully independent suspension with dual disc brakes up front and a wet, multi-plate style rear brake that delivered longevity and superb stopping performance in all types of riding conditions.

Suzuki ATV History
Introduction
Designed with the help of leading ATV MX championship racers, Suzuki brought the QuadRacer R450 to market in 2006. Like the original QuadRacer 250 that revolutionized ATV racing in 1985, this new quad combined Suzuki’s vast motocross knowledge with a fuel-injected four-stroke engine held in an intelligent chassis design that features wide front A-arms, a sturdy steel swingarm and small diameter, low mass MX wheels. This ATV achieved racing success quickly and is still used in competition today.

Suzuki ATV History
Introduction
For 2009, the Suzuki added both a KINGQUAD 750AXi 4x4 and KINGQUAD 500AXi 4x4 model with standard electronic power steering. A novel feature at the time, this system uses a version of the proven technology used on Suzuki’s cars and SUVs. Designed to reduce steering effort for the rider, Suzuki’s power steering system also damps vibration to help deliver a more comfortable ride. Basically the power steering unit senses torque loads at both ends of the steering – input from the handlebar and the resistance from the tires. The unit then senses the amount of effort needed to twist the handlebars, thus allowing more steering assistance from the unit at slower speeds and less at higher speeds to reduce the amount of leverage the rider must use to turn the ATV.
