  • VILLAGE HALL TRUSTEES’ REPORT Colin Baker steps down as Newsletter editor after 14 years and we are pleased that his efforts (and those of his long suffering wife Christine) have been recognized as shown below. This award is very well deserved and it is wonderful that the picture in this edition allows many to put a face to the man who

has quietly done so much to keep our community informed. Colin is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour and has now started a course of chemotherapy. The numerous enquiries after him and best wishes for him and Christine have been relayed to them both

The Garage Sale Safari took place on Saturday 22nd April. Organised by Gay Woods and with lots of help from those on social media, there were 16 sales ranging from David Eyres selling vegetable plants to Alan Russell who had a kayak to sell. This is likely to become an annual event.

The trustees’ meeting on 9 May took place after our annual summary had been delivered at the Parish Council AGM. The picture was positive as the halls is well, is in good material condition as well as financially sound. We emphasized continuity and some ongoing changes and concluded by acknowledging the necessary close cooperation with the Parish Council. We also requested that more of the community make more use of the hall or volunteer to help to run it. Other business addressed the change of cleaning contract, which should deliver some savings. We are also planning production of a Roll of Honour Board, which seeks to recognise those who have

contributed greatly to the hall and have now passed away. The next meeting is scheduled for July 24 where the focus will be on future events such as the Steeple Rocks Cabaret Night on 7 Oct and the Bonfire Night on 4 Nov. The next full meeting will be on 5 Sep. If you want to do something for the village, or are just curious about what are meetings are like, you’d be welcome to come along.

    Village Hall Chairperson

Starquest Astronomy enjoyed another interesting talk from one of our own members on "The Formation of Planets". Gary’s talk was accompanied by slides and animated video clips to explain. The "University of the Third Age" also came to see what we are about and tell is about their organisation.

Jupiter is now visible in the southern sky during the evening. 22nd - 31st May: Comet Johnson is also visible, with binoculars, travelling through the constellation of Bootes: a kite-shaped constellation below The Plough in the northern sky incorporating the bright star of Arcturus.

  • Parish Council Report The Annual Parish Meeting was on March 9. The Councillors warmly welcomed several representatives from local groups and organisations who came to give their annual activity reports. Thanks to Richard Jackman: Village Hall Trustees, Penny Carroll: Women’s Institute, Rachel Brotherton: Sutton Veny School, Annabel Elliott: SVPCC, Peter Strangeways: Neighbourhood Watch, Brian Long: Trustees of the Alexander Memorial Field & Rachel Guerri-Fear: Flower Show. The Parish Council Chairman & the Clerk also gave reports. The Chairman was delighted to present the Community Award Cup to Colin Baker, for his dedicated service as newsletter editor The Annual Council Meeting followed where Councillors Goodman, Guerri-Fear, King, Lusty, Morris, Owen, Oxlade & Walker were re-elected. Cllr Oxlade will remain in the Chair, with Cllr King acting as Vice-Chairman. Cllr Guerri-Fear gave a report on April’s tidy-up morning - our thanks to all the willing volunteers on the day. Whilst the village remains largely rubbish-free, there are problems with litter and fly tipping on Norton Road & Five Ash Lane. The Clerk would be pleased to receive any applications to fill the current Parish Council vacancy, please call Melissa on 840821 or email [email protected] The full draft minutes of the meetings will be published on the village website shortly. If you wish to see any of the AGM group reports, please contact Melissa.Melissa Atyeo

PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL The annual meeting took place on 27th April. Chip Stidolph has stepped down as Treasurer and is replaced by Andrew Crisp. After an additional year, Annabel Elliott has also stood down leaving Brian Long as the only churchwarden, but with PCC support. Chip and Annabel will continue to serve as PCC members, as will all of last year's PCC (Frank Lowe, Judy Cooper, Valerie Hopkins & Richard Jackman). Please talk to Revd Ali Morley or another PCC member if you’re interested in joining us.After prayers, which included June Dale, who will be much missed as a valued member of the church community, we discussed several new initiatives. It is important that that we are aware of community members who require some support either from inside or outside the community. We intend to be proactive in this area, but if you have views or ideas please let them be known. www.streetbank.com is a website which allows people to ask for and offer equipment, skills and time. Please take a look at it if you are interested in offering equipment or service to local people. We are aiming to create Junior Church facilities so that parents can attend church knowing that there will be a place for children to be helped and supported in a separate area of the church. We finalised documents for congregation members to thank them for their support, and to inform them how their contributions have been used. We also asked them to review their existing donation arrangements. These letters will be followed by similar communications to the wider community later in the year. This stewardship initiative is to ensure that the church’s existing financial position is on a sound footing- an essential move before we can even consider any development projects. We are enthusiastic about possible changes that, in our 150th anniversary years, will make the church fit to serve the whole community for at least the next 150 years. The church architect visited recently and his expertise will assist us in the addition of a toilet, kitchen area, heating improvements and potentially an enclosed space. The ‘Green’ credentials of any scheme to improve the church will be of significant importance. All the more so because St John’s has now registered as an Eco Church. While we have a way to go to attain an Eco Church Bronze award, the regime being followed in the churchyard, and the hard work being put in by many volunteers, was recognised by Wiltshire Living Churchyards when the Bishop of Salisbury presented the church with its award for 3 years of good management for wildlife. Please take look at www.ecochurch.arocha.org.uk and consider becoming part of the group that is seeking to improve our Green credentials. The Produce Stall runs from July 15 to September 30 from 10:30 on the green by Walnut Close. Donate or buy produce and meet community members. Contact Valerie Hopkins if you’re interested in volunteering. The PCC will meet again on 25 July CHURCH SERVICES MAY Sun 21 11am Matins Sun 28 8.30am Holy Communion

It is rather daunting to step into Colin’s experienced shoes. Some of you may know me from the time that our son was at school and from my time on the Flower Show Committee. I would welcome any items about local events, what personally or professional achievements, about local business people and what is wanted/for sale etc. I feel that we tend not to know much about people who live here, over and above our close friends. I’d also like to include information about who lives in our community. Anyone who’d like to be interviewed, please don’t be shy and get in touch
