Situation & Amenities
Sutton Bingham Manor is situated off a peaceful lane,
adjacent to a pretty Norman parish church, on the edge
of the tiny village of Sutton Bingham. The village lies within
beautiful South Somerset countryside adjacent to Sutton
Bingham Reservoir, which has a thriving sailing club. The
village itself has no local amenities but there is an excellent
farm shop about half a mile away and the neighbouring
village of East Coker (1½ miles) has a parish church,
village hall, public house and primary school.
E There are five village primary schools within a
five mile radius. Nearby private schools include
Hazlegrove, the Sherborne schools, Leweston,
Millfield and Perrott Hill.
S The regional centre of Yeovil is only 4½ miles
away with an excellent range of shops and retail
parks and the Abbey town of Sherborne and
county town of Dorchester are also only 8½ and
18 miles away respectively.
t Sherborne, Dorchester, Yeovil and Exeter all
provide excellent entertainment venues.
e There are a number of bistro pubs and
restaurants within the local area.
M The A37 is about 1½ miles away providing quick
access to the main trunk roads and motorway
network.
T There is a mainline rail service from Yeovil to
London Waterloo taking about 2¼ hours.
A The airports at Bristol, Bournemouth and
Exeter are all just over an hour’s drive away
offering connections within the UK and to many
international destinations.
Sutton Bingham Manor
A manor was recorded on the site in the Domesday Book, where
a later Tudor building was burned down before being replaced
by the current house in 1608. Sutton Bingham Manor is a Grade
II listed Jacobean Manor House built of local cut stone with Ham
stone dressings under a predominantly clay tiled roof, which
has been extended sympathetically later in the Victorian and
Edwardian eras. The house has a light and airy feel as many of the
rooms have windows on two sides and also has great charm with
many original and attractive period features including oak panelling
and flooring and open fireplaces with cut stone surrounds in many
rooms.
On the ground floor the front door opens to the oak-panelled
entrance hall, which has a striking Arts and Crafts staircase rising
to the galleried landing and a door to the oak panelled drawing
room, which has French windows opening on to a terrace. A
stone-flagged passage from the hall leads to the cloakroom, dining
room and kitchen/breakfast room, which is fitted with a range of
painted timber units and is equipped with a 4 oven oil-fired AGA
(cream) and a range of electrical and gas-fired cooking appliances,
and has a door leading out on to a large, paved terrace. A further
door from the kitchen leads through to the sitting room, with a
door leading on through to the playroom, laundry room and rear
hall.
On the first floor is the large master bedroom, which has an en-
suite bath and shower room, and adjacent guest bedroom, which
also has an en-suite bathroom. A corridor leads off the landing
with doors off to five further bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Ancillary Accommodation, Gardens & GroundsThe house is approached up a sweeping gravelled drive to a large
parking area with a pair of semi-detached cottages to one side
(Gardeners Cottage (4 bedrooms) and Clove Cottage (1 bedroom) and
the garage block, which comprises two double garages, machinery
store, workshop and 3 storerooms. Beside the house is a former grain
store converted into a wine store, larder and first floor artist’s studio. The
house sits centrally within 5 acres (2.02 hectares) of delightful gardens
and grounds, with two ponds, a stone-lined stream and an enclosed
garden at the rear of the house, bounded by borders, stone walling
and a summer house. Beyond the formal garden is the former kitchen
garden, which overlooks Sutton Bingham Reservoir and is now laid to
lawn, with a “natural” stone-lined heated swimming pool to one side.
ServicesMains water and electricity. Private drainage. Oil-fired central heating and
AGA. Bottled Calor gas.
