Purpose of this assignment
This unit aims to increase learners’ awareness of the need to plan and manage tourism at all levels
within an international, national, regional and local framework. Emphasis is placed on current trends
in planning for tourism development in a range of destinations. The stages in the planning process are
identified and learners will be encouraged to apply theoretical models to practical case studies and site
visits.
The principles and philosophy of sustainable development are introduced in this unit and learners
will be required to show an in-depth understanding of issues such as carrying capacities,
environmental impact and the guest–host relationships as they relate to current tourism initiatives,
eg access, conservation, enclave tourism.
Information for tourism development
Tourism is an economic growth tool for national, international and local economies. There are
numerous destinations in the world, have pursued development without proper planning and without
considering the impacts for such development plans. Specific attention must be paid for the key issues
concerning tourism development in less developed countries. It stresses that, to plan effectively for
tourism development while managing positive and negative effects. This assignment will discuss
tourism development planning approaches to achieve the targets and objectives of tourism
development for a destination.
Nowadays, tourism has undeniably acquired an important place internationally. It states that it was
long believed that it would be possible to benefit from the positive impacts of tourism, by setting
some strategies whose main core would be a strong promotion, together with a very slow
development and, thus, not inflating the economic, social and environmental costs. It is vital to point
out the positive as well as the negative aspects of the practice of tourism and, at the same time suggest
planning as a way of causing the positive aspects to minimise the negative ones.
