I. Executive Summary:

Sustainable Solutions is a national professional services firm active in the environmental sustainability and relationship management sector. Our company works with a number of organizations that range from high profile to grass-root levels.

Our team has the highest professional qualifications. Four credentialed consultants will be working directly on this project with access to additional consultants if warranted. Sustainable Solutions combines a broad-range experience with specialized knowledge of the environmental sustainability market, reflecting many years of experience. We have growing knowledge of proposed community outreach aimed at increasing company visibility and generating revenue for non-profit organizations.

Our company is providing a proposal for Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV), the Santa Clara, CA based environmental improvement and resource conservation organization. We believe that the vast resources and knowledge of a company like Sustainable Solutions will have the expertise to increase the visibility and support the objectives of SSV. As specialists in environmental sustainability and relationship management, we are aware of the need to be fully cognizant of the potentially unanticipated outcomes.

We are proposing a guide, titled the University Outreach Program (UOP), modeled around Santa Clara University that will increase SSV’s presence on college campuses. The UOP will allow SSV to effectively recruit students as a resource to help Silicon Valley reduce its carbon emissions. The UOP will be designed to reach Santa Clara University students, but can be adapted to reach students at other universities. Through our proposed University Outreach Program, SSV will give students the opportunity to establish relationships with the organization in ways that will help SSV raise human and monetary capital.

One of our primary objectives is to create the most cost-effective outreach plan. We are reducing our standard consulting fee to a commission-based model of a 5% charge of fundraising revenue. By using this cost structure we are equally invested in the success of this project.

By providing Sustainable Silicon Valley with specific collaterals we are offering tools to effectively reach university students. This guide, along with its marketing collaterals, will be provided by Wednesday, December 11, 2013. These tools include, but are not limited to, a packaged set of deliverables consisting of: University Leaders Email Template; Student Body Email Template; Posters/Flyers; Environmental Fact Sheet; and the University Outreach Program guide.

Our proposal shows what makes Sustainable Solutions uniquely qualified to support SSV in its endeavors to successfully establish their presence on university campuses. Firms focusing solely on management consulting cannot match our expertise.II. Introduction to Sustainable Solutions:

Page 2: Sustainable Silicon Valley Consulting Project

2

Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) is committed to significant environmental improvement and resource conservation in the Silicon Valley. In order to make the greatest impact on environmental improvements in the valley, SSV needs to convince university students to use sustainable practices and become active participants in the organization.  Sustainable Solutions proposes a plan titled the University Outreach Program (UOP), which will address the following critical needs of the organizations.

Reducing CO2 emissions Creating environmental change agents Forming strategic relationships to attract human capital and raise donations

Methods to Reach GoalOne of SSV’s primary goals is to reduce CO2 emissions in Silicon Valley since greenhouse gas emissions remain one of the leading causes of environmental pollutants. California passed the Assembly Bill 32 in 2006; a law to reduce greenhouse gases by 2020. This urgency to take political action is due to California production of more than 370 million tons of CO2 in 2010. Currently, SSV is working with stakeholders, companies, and organizations in the Valley to implement Environmental Management Systems that will help reduce CO2 emissions. However, SSV can significantly increase their positive impact on the environment by spreading awareness and suggesting ways to reduce emissions by directly reaching out to college students.  Students have the power to make a significant impact on CO2 reductions by living more sustainably, but need to be enabled to make these environmental conscious decisions.

Proposed Solution We believe the UOP will allow SSV to effectively recruit students as a resource to help Silicon Valley reduce its emissions. The UOP will be designed to reach Santa Clara University students but can be adapted to other universities. Although SSV has developed key partnerships with educational institutions in Silicon Valley like Santa Clara University, it has not formed a strong presence directly with the student body. Currently, SSV has worked to reduce emissions at Santa Clara University by implementing clean energy technologies that allow the utilities department to control heating, air conditioning, lighting, and indoor air quality from a central computer. This gives institutions the ability to reduce CO2 emissions, but still limits the potential individual students have to make a positive impact on the environment.

Through our proposed University Outreach Program, SSV will give students the control to make informed personal decisions to help solve the environmental problems California is facing today. By outreaching to university students, SSV will establish relationships with people who can contribute to the organization in various ways. For instance, some students will want to volunteer, intern, and offer their skills to the organization after knowing the mission behind SSV. Additionally, the UOP will generate funds during events on campus and through future donations from students.

Challenges Presented

Page 3: Sustainable Silicon Valley Consulting Project

3

We recognize that SSV has limited resources to spend on outreach programs, which is why we constructed a plan in the most cost efficient way. The UOP is designed to allow SSV to tap into the university’s network of students, faculty members, and free resources to create a presence on campus. However, implementing these events and developing these partnerships will require an employee or volunteer’s dedication. Once students are empowered with knowledge about SSV, there is great potential to improve the regional environment and obtain donations to help sustain the organization. Since this UOP is specific to Santa Clara University, some components of the project may not directly be applicable to other colleges. To avoid this problem, we will provide a wide range of events to ensure that at least some options can be implemented at universities.

Impact Scale of University Outreach ProgramWe believe that SSV will be able to potentially change the relationships students have with the environment by using students as catalysts to promote sustainability. Santa Clara University alone has a student body of over 5,200 undergraduates who all have the potential to contribute and add value to SSV. This customized University Outreach Program will give SSV the ability to reduce CO2 emissions on a larger scale while simultaneously creating opportunities for student involvement within the organization.

III. Rationale:

Page 4: Sustainable Silicon Valley Consulting Project

4

Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV) has made incredible strides at reducing the carbon dioxide emissions in Silicon Valley by working with high profile companies. These firms include NASA, Google, and the Sierra Club, all of which have made substantial and measurable differences in their reduction of carbon emissions. However, Sustainable Silicon Valley has yet to make a meaningful connection with universities in the region. Despite Santa Clara University being a partner of SSV, there is a lack of its visibility and presence among students on-campus. The plan Sustainable Solutions is proposing, the University Outreach Program (UOP), will act as a guide with any of the universities in the region to form a better connection with the students. By forming a closer partnership with the university, it will target the students in a more personal way. This personal association will give students the responsibility and power to make smaller and uniquely tailored changes to their lifestyle to contribute to SSV’s goal to reduce CO2 emissions.

The University Outreach Program Plan will consist of a series of small events that will take place over the course of a given week. The events will vary from tabling with flyers and fact sheets, to lectures and fundraising. The underlying event that will bridge them together is selling reusable water bottles as a fundraiser and marketing tool. The event series will be preceded by marketing SSV and the UOP through various channels of the university. This will be done by making contacts with student-run clubs on campus, professors, and departments of the university.  In order to receive the most feedback, we suggest partnering with social action and environmental-oriented clubs who may already have an invested interest in the objectives of SSV with their university. By forming relationships with diverse segments of the university, news of the events and opportunities can be spread more efficiently.

The UOP will be designed to target diverse segments of the student body. The program will offer various events that are tailored to students with different levels of interest and knowledge on the environment allowing for all students to participate. The UOP events will include: tabling, info sessions, volunteer options, and fundraising. Tabling will occur throughout the week in high-traffic areas of the campus to increase SSV’s visibility. We will provide the students with the possibility to take a “Carbon Footprint Quiz” as a way to recognize their individual daily impact, challenging them to change aspects of their lifestyle. This particular component of the UOP aims at students who have a knowledge gap or possible disconnect between their personal actions and environmental impact. Students are very impressionable and are still forming lifestyle practices and thus are an important segment to target. At this time, there will also be volunteer sign-up options and opportunities for donations. This is meant to not only reach students who may be willing to donate on the spot, but also plant the seed for future donations.

To reach the university community that may be more environmentally inclined and aware, there will be a lecture provided. The lecture will look into more complex environmental issues that focus on the goal of reducing CO2 emissions. The University Outreach Program provides instructions on how to get the Environmental Studies and Science departments involved as a direct contact. Their input will help SSV better understand what topics and gaps are present among the university students. Furthermore,

Page 5: Sustainable Silicon Valley Consulting Project

5

the student clubs will be contacted to get the word out to its members to ensure a bigger audience and impact. In the case of Santa Clara University, the lecture will be counted as an Environmental Studies and Science colloquial credit. All students enrolled in the Environmental Studies and Science departments require these credits. This will ensure a greater presence at the forums as well as access to students who are already interested in environmental issues and who may be inclined to volunteer at SSV.

To connect these different outreach programs, the SSV reusable water bottles will be sold at each event on campus to promote sustainability, increase brand image, and raise money. By selling water bottles, students will be able to purchase a sustainable product that can already begin to create a lifestyle change while also promoting the reduction of waste. More over, the water bottles will act as a fundraiser for SSV to offset the costs of the events. The more students that purchase bottles, the more familiar the university members will become with the SSV logo, and will thus create a lasting advertising tool. While the purchase of these water bottles may incur a large up-front cost for SSV, the UOP recognizes the need to get donations and discounts in order to receive a greater profit per bottle sold.

The UOP plan to connect SSV with students is very valuable and expansive. By linking SSV with the various levels of the university, from individual students to entire departments, it is able to reach a greater number of people. The plan uses the resources SSV already has and takes advantage of the knowledge the leaders in the university have to make a specified series of events. This specialized approach to each university will create greater influence and have a more sustaining impact and relationship. While the plan acts more as a guide than a step-by-step to do list, we strongly believe that the flexibility of the plan is the most important to make the greatest impact.

Pricing Break Down One of the main objectives of the University Outreach Program is to create the most cost-effective plan possible. Sustainable Solutions recognizes that SSV is an organization that needs to maximize its profits, taking advantage of the resources it already has. These calculations have been determined using Santa Clara University as a model.

Due to Sustainable Solution’s dedication to SSV’s goals and priorities, we are cutting our standard consulting fee. For the special case of SSV we will be implementing a 5% commission rate of fundraising revenue. This is a reduction from the previous commission rate of 15%. By using this cost model, we are equally as determined to make the UOP successful and effective. As a way to disclose information out to the student body, there will be necessary marketing collateral costs.

Page 8: Sustainable Silicon Valley Consulting Project

8

Along with our fees, SSV will incur an upfront cost to purchase the water bottles. We have based this cost analysis on the water bottle distributor, Bulletin Bottles. (see Appendix G). However, we anticipate a further discount price from the water bottle company by leveraging SSV’s status as a non-profit organization.

As a source of revenue, the water bottles will be sold at an affordable yet profit-generating price. We are forecasting that 2.5% of the student body population of 5,200 will be willing to purchase a water bottle. If the bottles cost around $5.00 and are sold for $10.00, plus the additional expected donation revenue of $50.00 from tabling, this will create a profit of $582.50.

Besides the quantifiable costs and revenues, we expect there to be other benefits. As a result of the University Outreach Program, Sustainable Solutions predicts an increase in human capital for SSV as well as the potential for future donations. Furthermore, the UOP will create more visibility for Sustainable Silicon Valley as well as accomplish their goals to reduce CO2 emissions.

Dear Ms. Van Gasse:

Thank you for your interest in working with us. We here at Sustainable Silicon Valley would be thrilled to work with your organization to increase our visibility on college campuses across Silicon Valley. It has become increasingly difficult for SSV to create an effective plan to raise and implement awareness, as many of our event-planning coordinators are un-paid volunteers. Planning events such as hosting on-campus lectures and selling our products as you have proposed, are fundamental to the success of our visibility.

I have reviewed your team’s resumes and based on my prior experience, I feel confident that you and your team have the credentials to successfully help us plan and implement these events. Not only will this series of weeklong events provide capital that our organization needs, but it will also increase our on-campus visibility as well as our human capital.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
