SUSTAINABLE HNL PROGRAM Developing and fostering a sustainable culture

Sustainable HNL (sHNL) is an airport-wide initiative dedicated to promoting sustainability across HNL and Hawaii. Hawaii’s Department of Transportation-Airport Division (DOT-A) established the sHNL program in 2011, in accordance with the Sustainable Aviation Guidance Alliance (SAGA) recommendations for airport management. The program is led by the dynamic HNL Sustainability Committee (HNL-SC), made up of an interdisciplinary team of DOT-A stakeholders.

Starting in 2016, sHNL will provide a unified platform that is built around common high-level goals and initiatives rooted in sustainable best practices, in a way that is publicly recognized, measured, and rewarded. These practices translate into: • Improved capital asset life cycle & operating costs • Better design • Increased competitiveness & productivity • Better customer service & satisfaction • More effective use of resources • Elimination of waste • Optimized technologies • Enhanced relationships with customers and staff

sHNL is committed to managing the airport to ensure economic viability, operational efficiency, natural resource conservation, and social responsibility (EONS).

SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT AT HNL

The goal of the SMP is to leverage design, construction, operations, and maintenance dollars through proven business practices, goals, and initiatives in order to pay benefits to the customers, employees, industry and local community.

The SMP uses a baseline assessment of natural resources to identify sustainability goals, objectives, and initiatives that will reduce environmental impacts, realize economic benefits, and improve community relations.

The SMP provides the framework for a management plan rooted in the best practices of sustainability. Through the SMP, HNL aligns with the State and local goals, policies, and initiatives by conducting a comprehensive analysis of how and where sustainability management is to be implemented in long-term planning.
