Geothermal Energy in India

• About 300 thermal springs are known

• Thirty one areas examened in detail

• Shallow drilling have been done in sixteen areas

• Medium (100°C-200°C) and low enthalphy (<100°C) geothermal energy resourcs/systems

• Medium enthalphy geothermal systems are associated with young intrusive granites (as in Himalya), major tectonics features and rifts and graben

Project application

The application is based on the INDNOR project and was

approved in the spring 2012

It will go over 3 year, from 2012 to 2015

The project is fully supported and granted by The

Research Council of Norway

It was applied for three parts;

- Ground Source Heat Pump

- Underground Thermal

Energy Storage

- Local district heating systems

utilizing thermal spring water

of 40-95°

Objects of the project - Energy from the lava in

Himalayas (Agneyodgara Urja)

Primary objects:

The vision of the project is to develop and demonstrate

innovative and sustainable technologies for utilization

of geothermal sources to supply North Western Indian

Himalayas with renewable energy

Secondary objects:

Pilot project studies, demonstrating local district heating system utilizing thermal spring water of 40-95° and Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) technology and applications

Space heating with direct use of heat

• There will be a demonstration plant in Chumathang,

Jammu & Kashmir.

• Numerous heat

sources in Chumathang.

Nearby, there is a direct

source outside a building

used for washing.

Other work that will be done at Chumatang

• A local geological map will be established by NITH in

Hamipur where the most important structures shall

be included

• WADIA will take some more watersamples

• WADIA will make some MT (magneto-telluric) survey

to detect up-flow of thermal fluid into the reservoir

Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)

• SASE (Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment), Manali,

Himachal Pradesh. Established 969

• Are under DRDO (Defense Research & Development

Organization, that are under Ministry of Defence, Gov. of India.

• Have some existing borehole

that can possibly be used.

Site visit after summer.
