SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS

Natural HazardsRationale – Specific programme

“Management of natural hazards related to climate and geological hazards requires improved knowledge, methods and an integrated framework for the assessment of hazards, vulnerability and risks.

Multidisciplinary research aiming to understand better the underlying processes should be pursued to improve

detection, prediction and forecasting methods.

Multi-risk approach combined with spatial planning, mapping, modelling are needed for the development of prevention and mitigation strategies.

Environmental and societal resilience and repercussions of major natural hazards should be quantified.”

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS

Natural Hazards in Europe

Future trends ?Future trends ?

Climate related natural hazards will increase throughout Europe, although different type of hazards will predominate in different regions e.g.– Increasing risk of floods, snowmelt-related floods, flash floods.– Possible storms increase in the north-eastern Atlantic, decrease

in storminess and wind intensity in the Mediterranean– Extreme precipitation events may increase landslide hazard– In mountains, change in T° and snow conditions may increase

avalanches, affect permafrost and rock falls– In the Mediterranean, decrease precipitation and increased

temperature may lead to a longer fire season and dry season.

Page 22: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS Natural Hazards Research From the 6th towards the 7th Framework Programme Marta Moren Abat Climate

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS

• Towards better prediction of landslides events

• Generation, propagation and fate of sediment and debris in extreme floods

• Vulnerability assessment of buildings, lifelines systems and network related to earthquakes

• Environmental, social and economical assessment and management of flood: Present and future scenarios, for EU and key areas in non EU countries

• Environmental, social and economical assessment of drought risk approaches (EU and non EU perspective)

• Public perception, behaviour and response to risks

• Seismic and other geo-hazards risk assessment and mitigation for built environment and infrastructures

• Towards a European science research agenda in support to the UN strategy for disaster reduction and its European national initiatives

• Assessment of socio-economic benefit of prevention and mitigation strategies and plans

• Climate change and social impacts on wild fires regimes and landscape recovery
