Long-term sustainability of GMES

The objective is to set up pilot-phase activities demonstrating operational scenarios, based on a limited number of initial GMES services allowing the sharing of, or interfaces between, infrastructures, and practical arrangements for the common use or exchanges of data, products and core-services, and to develop a long-term perspective for the services required by the end-users.

FP6 IMPLEMENTATIONSpecific Support Actions – 6.3 Call

4Specific Support Actions are projects aiming at:

• Promoting and facilitating the dissemination, transfer, exploitation, assessment and/or broad take-up of past and present programme results (over and above the standard diffusion and exploitation activities of individual projects)

• Contributing to strategic objectives, notably regarding the European research area (e.g. pilot initiatives on benchmarking, mapping, networking, etc.)

• Preparing future community RTD activities, (e.g. via prospective studies, exploratory measures pilot actions etc.)

• Open to all areas of the WP, although no research costs per se are allowed

FP6 IMPLEMENTATIONThe Water Cycle – Pri. 6.3 Call 4

AREA II.5: Water in Agriculture(Up to 2 STREPs/CAs)The participation of 3rd country partners is requested.

AREA II.6: Water scenarios for Europe and neighbouring countries(Topic for up to 1 New Instrument)The participation of 3rd countries should cover in particular the areas surrounding the EU and associated candidate countries borders in order to cover the whole geographic Europe – up to the Urals and Caucasus – and the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas.

4AREA VI: Operational forecasting &

modelling European underwater ocean observatory

system. (Topic for 1 NI - Provisional)Contribute to the implementation of a sustained European ocean margin observatory network, extending into deep water, capable of monitoring biological, geo-chemical, geophysical and physical processes occurring throughout the water column, sea floor interface and solid earth below.

This should form the sub-sea segment of GMES and contribute to the GEO initiative. Emphasis should be given to SME participation and to international cooperation, as well as to the potential for technology transfer

FP6 IMPLEMENTATIONGlobal Change – Pri. 6.3 Call 4

AREA I.4: Climate change impacts in the Mediterranean Area

(Topic for up to 1 NI - Provisional)Integrated quantification of climate change impacts in the Mediterranean. Within an integrated framework probable changes over the next decades to a century including e.g. changes of weather patterns, extreme events, sea circulation, water resources and air pollution levels should be addressed together with probable associated consequences for economics sectors, living condition and health indicators. Possible mitigation and adaptation strategies should be discussed. Participation from North African and Middle East countries is strongly encouraged.

4AREA III: Biodiversity and ecosystemsAssess and forecast changes in the Med.

and Black Sea Ecosystems and their ability to provide Services. (Topic for 1 NI – prov.)

Assess and forecast changes in the Mediterranean and Black Seas ecosystems, as well as changes in the ability of these ecosystems, to provide goods and services and to buffer against environmental change.

Models and simulations should be designed with, and their output tested through, co-ordinated field measurement campaigns, building on existing networks.

FP6 IMPLEMENTATIONThe Marine Domain – Pri. 6.3 Call

4AREA III: Biodiversity and ecosystemsAssess and forecast changes in the Med.

and Black Sea Ecosystems - continuedThe models should be sensitive to bio-geographical variations across the sea basins and forecast the combined effects of the main drivers operating at the sea basin scale, including climate change. The models should serve the protection, sust. management & utilisation of biodiversity, ecosystems and natural resources; they should also contribute to the assessment of alternative policy options.

Emphasis will be given to international co-operation and to the participation of candidate countries

4AREA VI: Operational forecasting &

modelling Integrated development of European

coastal and regional seas forecasting system(Topic for 1 New Inst. - Provisional)Support the consolidation, integration and development of existing networks (remote sensing and in-situ observations) into an integrated pan-European system able to make long-term systematic measurements of oceanic parameters, including biological parameters, in the regional and coastal seas of Europe. Such a system is targeted at detecting environmental and climate changes, predicting their evolution, producing forecasts and developing decision support systems, taking particularly into account the GMES and GEO initiatives.

FP6 IMPLEMENTATIONThe Marine Domain – Pri. 6.3 Call

4AREA VI: Operational forecasting &

modelling Integrated development of European

coastal and regional seas forecasting system

Such a system should be designed to respond to the end-users needs as stressed in the GMES 2004-2008 Implementation Plan.

Emphasis will be given to international co-operation, to the participation of international partners and SMEs, as well as to the potential for technology transfer.
