Defining and tracking “sustainability” research activities

as a mandate of the OU Sustainability Plan

Sustainability Research Activities: “Sustainability” research activities must be multidisciplinary and must advance knowledge in all three of the tenets of

sustainability: preserving the planet, promoting a strong economy and fostering healthy populations. Activities which

will be included in the inventory of sustainability research activities will include controlled terms from each of the three

tenets.

Controlled Term Searches for Sustainability Research: Research must have at least one controlled term from each of the 3 columns below to be considered conducting

“Sustainability Research” OR have the word “Sustainability” in the title of the article or grant application. These terms

will be evaluated each year by the Office of Sustainability in response to comments from Ohio University faculty, staff

and students.

Faculty members listed in the 2012 Annual Sustainability Report list were determined by inclusion on prior lists (i.e.

Planet Ohio), by searching the controlled terms in the LEO grants database, by searching Academic Complete using the

controlled terms and the phrase “Ohio University”, or by personal reference.
